There are six types of hatsu...Reinforcement, Emission, Manipulation, Materialization, Transformation and Specialization. There are ways in the manga to know which type you are. But one of them don't work to well in real life. Choose yourself or hears a trick, your personality often reflects your type...
Reinforcement- Single minded, stuborn and simple
Emission- Impatient, emotonally disturbed
Manipulation- Reasoners, advance at their own pace
Materialization- Shy, nervous
Transformation- Unpredictable, dishonest
Specialization- Individualistic, charismatic
((Note: Gyo is needed to see a Emission, Transformation and some Specialization abilities))

Reinforcement
If a student increases the quantity of water in the glass during their water divination, they are an reinforcer. Reinforcement is basically the ability to use aura to increase the efficiency of an object or one's own body. Therefore, Enhancers are able to greatly increase their physical attack and defense, and are best suited for close-melee combat. Reinforcement just as it sounds, is used to reinforce. The way this most readily comes to mind is that a fist could be reinforced with Nen to make a punch much stronger. Or the stomach could be reinforced with Nen to make someone not even feel a kick to their gut. However it goes much beyond that. With reinforcement Nen can be applied also to physical objects. It can be used to make paper razor sharp when thrown, or make a sword nearly unbreakable. A reinforced shovel will dig through stone like it is butter. While Reinforcement can be used for various tricks, it is also the most basic fighting ability. Anyone who gets in physical combat with a Nen user had better be able to use Reinforcement for at least defense or they will be literally ripped to shreds. Similarly, Reinforcement is known for having "Perfect Defense and Attack". Because Reinforcement can block against very nearly any attack. Even Emission attacks can be blocked by a Reinforcement's defensive abilities.
Even if you are reinforcement type you can use other abilities but you'll only ever beable to get so good as seen below.
Reinforcement Users are: 100% in Reinforcement 80% in Emission 60% in Manipulation 0% in Specialization 60% in Materialization 80% in Transformation
As you can also see reinforcement users are also pretty good at emission and transformation. These two abilities can be used in making a special attack. So you should check into those to when thinking up an ability that goes beyond reinforcement.
You can do manipulation and materialization. Its just that you can only get it to 60%. Which is better though? Well out of these two its almost a tie. The real limit is your creativity.
-----Example Reinforcement Ability from a HxH character-----
Uvogin's favorite ability is his "Big Bang Impact". Though it is little more than a punch pumped up with his aura, it is extremely powerful due to Uvogin's mastery of Enhancement Nen. The impact can create a large crater several meters in width and depth, and packs the force of a small missile. His goal was to make the Big Bang Impact as powerful as a nuclear bomb.

Emission
If a student changes the color of the water in the glass during their water divination, they are an Emitter. An affinity for Emission means that a user is capable of controlling the deployment of their aura while separating it from their body. Aura usually decreased in intensity very quickly when it is separated from the source body, but strong Emitters can separate their aura from their body for long-periods of time and still be able to maintain it.
An application of this is the ability to throw giant balls of aura. Emission abilities are commonly mistaken for Conjuration abilities. The two, however, are fundamentally different. Objects created by Emitters are made of pure aura, believed to be invisible to normal people, and requires Manipulation skills to control.
Even if you are emission type you can use other abilities but you'll only ever beable to get so good as seen below.
Emission Users are: 100% in Emission 80% in Manipulation 0% in Specialization 40% in Materialization 60% in Transformation 80% in Reinforcement
As shown above, manipulation and reinforcement are the two other abilities a emisson user can use. Manipulation will of course let you control your projectile how you want. Then reinforcement can change not only the attack and defence of the projectile, but the speed as well.
For the other abilities you can see above, tansformation and materializtion. Transformation can be pretty useful as you can. It can have an big effect on your projectile. As for materialization, it may not be useful at all. Making something to wouldn't be to bad, like a bow or gun...but its a little pointless. You can shape your nen into a bow and use your finger as a gun.
-----Example Emission Ability from a HxH character-----
Pokkle's nen ability is called "Rainbow", a bow created from nen that can shoot arrows with the seven different colors of the rainbow. Each arrow has its own attribute. Red arrows burst into flames on contact causing the target to catch fire, while Orange arrows have the fastest speed. The effects of the other colors are unknown.

Manipulation
If a student moves the leaf floating on the water in the glass during their water divination, they're a Manipulator. Manipulation is the ability to control living or non-living material. Abilities belonging to Manipulators tend to be more complex, and generally require certain conditions to be met before the user is able to control the target object.
Even if you are manipulation type you can use other abilities but you'll only ever beable to get so good as seen below.
Manipulation Users are: 100% in Manipulation 0% in Specialization 60% in Materialization 40% in Transformation 60% in Reinforcement 80% in Emission
This ability is made to go hand in hand withe emission. Why? So the effects last long and whatever your manipulating can go ferther. Normally nen gets weaker as it leaves your body, but with emission thats not so.
The other abilities like materialization and reinforcement are okay as well. Materialization will let you make something to control people/things with. Reinforcement will make thing your controling better then normal, Like spintops.
-----Example Manipulation Ability from a HxH character-----
Baise is one of Neon Nostrade's newly hired bodyguards. She's a manipulator, and her ability "Instant Lover: 180-Minute Love Slave" has to ability to make a manservant out of any man she kisses.

Materialization
If a student creates an object in the water in the glass during the their water divination, they are a materializer. Materializion is the ability to create a physical, independent, material object out of one's aura. Once a person has mastered the Materialization of a certain object, they can materialize it and dispel it in an instant, whenever they want. It is believed that materialization is the only way in which Nen can create things which ordinary people (unaware of Nen) can see and touch. However the use of In can hide an object materialized from aura from experienced users of Nen.
However, Materialization users do NOT just go around materializing anything they need. First of all it takes weeks of constant effort to be able to materialize an object, because the person must become very familiar with the object they want to make. Secondly because it's often not practical. Why would a Materialization user waste their Nen creating a "sword which cannot break" when they could, with much less effort, create a sword and then use Nen to reinforce it and make it NEARLY impossible to break?
Even if you are materialization type you can use other abilities but you'll only ever beable to get so good as seen below.
Materialization Users are: 100% in Materialization 80% in Transformation 60% in Reinforcement 40% in Emission 60% in Manipulation 0% in Specialization
With materialization, other abilities aren't that important. You can have them...but whats the point really.
-----Example Materialization Ability from a HxH character-----
"Countdown" is a destructive curse type nen, where Genthru places an invisible "time bomb" onto an opponent through saying a secret word (which is "Bomber"). To reveal and begin the countdown of the bomb, he has to explain how this skill works, including the method for removing the bomb, as a condition of activation. In order to remove the time bomb, while making contact with Genthru an opponent must say "I caught the Bomber." The bombs' timer starts at 6000 and goes down with each time the heart beats, meaning that the bombs countdown rate will differ depending on the circumstances.

Transformation
If a student changes the taste of the water in the glass during their water divination, they're a Transmuter. An affinity for transmutation means a person can change the properties of their aura to mimic something else. Similar to emission, things created via transmutation are still pure aura. A simple way of thinking about it would be that transmutation allows your aura to mimic properties of a substance, whereas conjuration allows you to change your aura into actual substances. Transmuters can copy the properties of real things.
Much like Materialization, Transformation is a case where the Nen User must've made themselves extremely familiar with the effects and feel of whatever they are forming their Nen into. We know this because several people note after seeing Killua turn his aura into eletricity that he must've had a horrible childhood, since no child should inherently know enough about the feeling of electricity to be able to reproduce it so easily.
Even if you are transformation type you can use other abilities but you'll only ever beable to get so good as seen below.
Transformation Users are: 100% in Transformation 80% in Reinforcement 60% in Emission 40% in Manipulation 0% in Specialization 80% in Materialization
The better thing to go with this ability is emission. Without it, your transforamtion ability will loose alot of power when it leaves the rest of your aura.
-----Example Materialization Ability from a HxH character-----
Hisoka can alter his aura's consistency into an incredibly sticky substance somewhat akin to bubble gum, albeit much stronger. It can be used to pull opponents within punching range for a flurry of rebound pummels. Bungee Gum can both stretch and contract, depending on what Hisoka desires. It can be attached either by pointing at his target or through direct physical contact. When not attached to Hisoka's body, Bungee Gum cannot stretch more than 10 millimeters. Hisoka named this ability after a brand of chewing gum he liked as a child. In the stage musicals, Bungee Gum has an additional odd ability - Hisoka can connect it to up to ten people, one on each finger, and use it to control their movements like a puppet. Usually, it involves forcing them to perform group dance numbers for his (and the audience's) amusement.

Specialization
If a student causes some other effect during their water divination, they're a Specialist. It is possible that the effect that occurs can give some insight into how they should direct their ability. Specialization is anything that doesn't belong into the other five categories. This is the most vague Hatsu category. For example, Kurapika's specialization ability allows him to use all the five standard Hatsu types at 100% efficiency. Chrollo Lucilfer's specialization ability is a combination of the other five types, but in a way that no other user of Nen can use. Neon Nostrade's specialization ability is unique, it has almost no relevance to any of the other five Hatsu types. It is possible to become a Specialist later in life, although it is more likely for Manipulators or Conjurers.
Even if you are specialization type you can use other abilities but you'll only ever beable to get so good as seen below.
Specialization Users are: 100% in Specialization ?% in Materialization ?% in Transformation ?% in Reinforcement ?% in Emission ?% in Manipulation
Its unclear which of the other abilities go well with specialization users because each is different. So reinforcement or materialization woulb be best.
-----Example Specialization Ability from a HxH character-----
Pakunoda is able to read the conscious thoughts of any person she is in physical contact with (an ability known as psychometry) and can extract memories by asking specific questions. Attempting to create false information is impossible, since Pakunoda can extract her target's purest memories. The information she collects is highly useful in exposing weaknesses and secrets, especially in finding out the opponent's nen ability or in situations requiring some form of extortion or blackmail. Pakunoda's ability can also be used to see the recent past of an object.
Chrollo's Nen Ability is called "Skill Hunter". It allows him to steal the Nen Abilities of other people to use them as his own using a book known as the "Bandit's Secret." The theft victim, of course, no longer has access to his ability. The theft happens under strict conditions: 1.)He must witness the nen ability in action with his eyes. 2.)He must ask about the ability and be answered by the victim. 3.)His victim's palm must touch the handprint on the cover of Bandit's Secret. 4.)All of the above must be done within an hour. To use one of the stolen abilities, he first conjures Bandit's Secret and turns to the page of the wanted ability. While using an ability, Chrollo must turn to the page with the ability on it and the book must remain opened in his right hand. Additionally, an ability vanishes from the book if its former owner dies.
((Note: This is a very tuff nen type to use and alot of it can fall into god modding. So if you do choose this type I want to see a very good or long pledge to go with it))
