As many of you might have gathered, I've been soul-searching about my priorities.
It seems messed up to me to see how a person looks (in the way of clothes and makeup and such) and focus on that rather than the inside and to do the same thing for oneself. Why emphasize clothes and fashion? Why allow it to consume one's thoughts even to the point that one can't properly empathize or get through appearances?

Here's the article that prompted me to bring this up: Still to be Neat

Personally, I wish that I were not interested in sewing clothes or fashion design! I tend to key in it and notice things about it, when I would rather key in on the person inside. I'm thinking that I need to adjust my priorities by doing- I ought to volunteer and spend time helping people.

i totally understand where your coming from
I feel so bad that i want to be in such a materialistic field
I always look towards peoples personalities but its kins of weird to
also kind of judge them on their clothes U-U

It's also so commercialized and so influenced by pop culture and shallow desires. It's hard to explain exactly what I mean though.

I've been thinking about helpful uses for my skills. After the wedding dress is finished, I've been thinking about getting involved with Little Dresses for Africa. I've also been considering making knitted hats to give to homeless shelters to give out to people (anyone want to join in and donate in his or her own town?).

I really don't want to become a shallow, self-centered adult. There's enough ugliness in the world as it is.

I feel like there's a middle ground here, people. You don't have to be shallow or superficial to be in this field. In fact, I think that it's best that one's not since it means you can serve people better. It really isn't all about us and the kind of person you are really has to do with how you are effected by other people, perhaps even more so than how you effect them.

Volunteering is good, as long as you don't !) go overboard with self-sacrifice, or 2) don't adopt an us vs. them attitude about it. I volunteer because I have to, but I don't mind helping people, I really never have.

Personally I might be a little superficial myself, but I also realize that no amount of walking in someone else's shoes is going to change that, only allow me to appreciate things like family a little more. I've always thought listening to other people, spending time to let them express themselves is the most unself-absorbed thing I could ever hope to do.
