I figured a lot of people are intimidated by bento b/c they may not have supplies such as molds, special shape cutters, the bento boxes themselves... but really, you don't need to buy a whole bunch of specialty crap to start creating your own awesome box lunch!
This thread is for asking questions, talking about, or suggesting substitutions for bento supplies! Hope this is helpful 3nodding

I've already mentioned this in the recipes section; when making octo-dogs, I have a special cutter for it but I can achieve the same thing by using a small knife and after cutting the hot dog in half I cut the bottom in the shape of a star/asterisk >>* ninja Fry it up and you get the same result!

if you can't get those little bottles or shakers for furikake, you might find those little plastic bubbles those prizes from the gumball machine come in to be very useful. ...They are not water-tight, so liquids aren't your friend in these. They do work alright for holding ginger and wasabi in sushi bentos seperate from the rest of the meal!

If you cant find or get a bento, you can use storage containers. They work as good as a bento box.

I spotted a few containers at the dollar store the other day that would probably make for a good bento. I imagine you'd want to stack two of them together because they're not terribly big (even by bento standards), but for a few bucks, you can't really complain.

I actually headed to the craft store for my latest bento box:
http://www.createforless.com/Snapware+Snap+N+Stack+Small+Square+3+Layer+1+Divided/pid112816.aspx?utm_source=googlebase&utm_medium=cse
The divided layer works great for my mini chopsticks, napkin, and desserts, while the other two hold the main meal and the side dish (this box might be best for people with moderate to large appetites, or for two people to share)
The previous one I bought was a life saver:
http://www.greenfeet.com/itemdesc.asp?kw=Lunch-On-The-Go-Food-Storage-Container&ic=6007-00082-0000&eq=
there's a reusable ice pack that separates the bottom layer of food from the two small top containers; it's great for those foods that need to stay a bit cool, like tuna salad or sushi.

This is more-or-less ingredient substitution, but it counts as supplies too, right? sweatdrop I'll remove it if it doesn't.
- If the recipe calls for Japanese curry powder and you don't have any available, Indian curry powder is the next best thing.
- Potato starch can be used as a substitute for Katakuriko.
- When Kuzu starch is unavailable, use arrowroot.
- If Mitsuba (Japanese parsley) is out of season, it can be substituted with flat-leaf parsley.
- If Mizuna is out of season, you can sometimes substitute arugula / rocket.
- Shiratake Noodles can be substituted with Harusame Noodles (also known as Spring Rain Noodles).
- If Yakisoba noodles are unavailable, you can use thin Hokkein noodles in their place.
(All substitutions cited from "A Little Taste Of Japan", Murdoch Books 2004)

JinxKat Nori punch / craft punch = same thing! Go to your craft store to see what you could potentially use in your bento! You'd be surprised whee OMG nori face punches are so expensive. Do you know what stores have lots of variety of craft punches? I don't need faces...maybe a bunny head punch would be cute. I was thinking of going to Michael's the craft store to look there....but is there anyone else that has lots of cheap punches?

I was thinking of going to Michael's the craft store to look there....but is there anyone else that has lots of cheap punches? Honestly your best bet would be if you were near an asian market... stores like Daiso and Ichiban Kan? Other than that the only thing I could suggest is stores like Michaels or Perls or whatever your neighborhood craft store is. But yea I know, those damn face punches are so expensive! I just can't bring myself to spend $20 on 3 face punches, I'd rather cut them out of the nori sheets myself with scissors! stressed

The dollar store has those travel packs for a dollar. Pink, Blue, and Purple. They come with two empty bottles(rather big for sauces, but maybe you could put something in them) and two containers which I have used for my pills, but you could use them for jelly, or butter maybe. they have a screw on lid. It comes with a luffa too, but I don't think you'll need that in your bento.
Pill boxes, individual ones. When I get Chinese I always save the sauce packets and use the sauces we have in bottles so that I can just slip them in my lunch.
If you use Venus intuition Razors you could use the containers the razors come in after a good wash in hot water. I haven't tried them in the dishwasher, but they're pretty good.

You can make very quick nigiri sushi using an ice cube tray as a mould - clean it out thoroughly, spray it with nonstick cooking spray then pack it tightly with the cooked rice, leave it to firm up for a bit and then turn it out and add your topping. The best ones to use are the bendy silicone ones rather than rigid ones, so you can turn the rice out easier.
If you have any novelty ice cube trays (I have some heart and star shapes) you can make jelly/jello in these and freeze them once they set. Pop a couple of frozen jelly cubes in your box and they will keep everything cool, defrost by lunchtime, and look cute as hell 3nodding
