If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, as I believe most of us do, you may have noticed it's starting to get dark out earlier and it's been much cooler. If, like me, you live in the top half of the Northern Hemisphere you might already have snow (or freeze warnings anyway).

And, if you are like me, the drop in temperature and loss of light might send you running indoors to vegetate in front of the TV/Game Console/Computer. But if, like me, you know better, you might want to fight to beef up your winter workout routine.

We all know the benefits of working out but here's a quick reminder:

-Healthy Hearts

-Increased Immune System Function

-Weight Loss or Maintenance

-Stress Relief

-Staying active keeps from developing stiff muscles and achy joints

-You don't have to bust butt in the spring time to get ready for bikini season again!

Of course, there are so many more reasons to stay active (and not just in the winter),

It's sometimes hard to make the transition from summer activities to working out indoors but, the good news is that you don't necessarily have to shut yourself in. Just remember some simple rules of exercising outdoors in cold weather.

-Dress in Layers-it's easy to get over heated, even if the mercury only says it's 30 degrees out. Also, pay attention to the wind chill, it can make it a lot colder then the thermometer says it is!

-Remember to stay hydrated, even if you don't feel thirsty, if you're sweating, you're losing water.

-Wear Sunscreen- just cause you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't shining.

-If you're going to run out when it's freezing, you might want to wear something over your mouth (tie a bandanna around your face if you need to) to keep yourself from breathing in the freezing air. (Doing this can lead to respiratory colds or pneumonia) By warming the air as you breathe, you are protecting your lungs!

The number one key to a successful winter work out is to STAY MOTIVATED! Get into a routine and stick to it. With all the scare of flu's and other bugs flying around the hemisphere, it's good to make sure you are staying in tip top shape!

Very good advice =)

I don't have to worry about it, though, since Puerto Rico is hot all year 'round xD
