Roaring 20s
The 20s fashions stand out among the decades for they show the demand by women to change. It was party time now that the "war to end all wars" was over. For the first time in history, women's legs are showing. The slim, tubular look of the "flapper" was "in." Some copied men's fashions in the Chanel suit. Confining undergarments were rejected. Women wanted freedom. The flattener bra was used to help create the straight, flat look of the flapper. The cloche hat, shaped like a bell, was a "must" for women of fashion. The Marcel hairstyle (waved hair) was popular as was the bob. Make-up and make-up accessories by Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein became essential for the Charleston-dancing Golden girls of the 20s. Tanned skin became the vogue as more of a woman's body was exposed to the sun. The cocktail dress came into being in glamorous lame and beaded chiffon, sometimes with uneven handkerchief hems and dropped waistlines. Beige and tan silk and rayon stockings were worn under T-strap shoes with shaped heels. One major development of the 20s which changed clothing forever was the development of the sizing system still used today.
