I'll be the mechanic. Do we have to be the characters? Or do we make up our own characters and just have the same jobs and personalities of the firefly crew?

You can have your own characters and own personality. It's supposed to be the story of a whole nother crew in a whole nother ship. The only thing thats the same is the universe they're in and the theme of wanting freedom.
