Hey uh, I'm kinda new here and all. And I'm kinda wondering, how should I start. I mean, I got a plan and everything but I don't get a few things. First off, can anyone please explain me how damage works? How can I choose feats? And the items, I can just copy/paste their stats right in, right?

When you damage something, you roll the dice, the number rolled takes that amount of HP away from monster/character/NPC/Strange jelly like creature.
1st and 2nd edition are always good for training people....and weeding out the incompetents.

I guess a good spot to start would be to create a character. There's a walkthrough here. I think she's still missing the sorcerer and wizard classes off of the list, so if you need the information for those let me know and I'll send them to you. Quote: First off, can anyone please explain me how damage works? How can I choose feats? And the items, I can just copy/paste their stats right in, right? Damage - Roll to hit (done with a d20). If you roll a number greater than or equal to their AC, you hit them. Then you roll your damage. This differs based on what weapon you're using and what, if any, bonuses it has. Feats - You gain X number of feats at level 1 (usually 1, but it can be more. That depends on your race) and then 1 feat every X number of levels (usually 3, but some classes have bonus feats on certain levels). Items - Yes ^_^ As for rolling, almost all of your rolls will be with a d20 (twenty sided dice). You'll do all of your To Hit, Saves, and Skill Checks with that. For things like Damage, you'd roll anything from a d4 to a d12. For now, let's get you through creating a character to play with, then either myself or someone else here can help explain the game mechanics. It's easiest when done in little chunks when you're new ^_^ If you have any questions at all about what to do, feel free to either pm me with the question or post it in the guild. We're nice, I promise! We don't bite too hard! hehehe, very true. But I won't miss having to roll percentage dice all the time. Stupid rogue class T.T. I still miss THAC0 though. Ahh, the days when a -10 AC was a good thing...

You put it much better than I did. Still half-way confused about 3.5, =)
Ahhh, THAC0, one of the more interesting aspects about the earlier additions, classes seemed to lose some of their uniqueness in the later versions.. *Stares blankly at the monster of a chart from 1.0 for ranger followers, and their chances at a copper dragon* Those rules are some of the more interesting ones, and help to weed out the good players out of the crowd. Tried setting up a 1.0/2.0 combination for a campaign but sadly none were interested.

Heh, I've just been teaching people how to play for a good long time. And thanks to my old job I got really, really good at writing tutorials and manuals and stuff.
I would have to agree. Although if you have a DM who's old school enough they might still use some of those rules. Heck, I allow the old school drow in. I hate what they did to them in the later editions (they need to be able to levitate damn it!), same with the aasimar and tiefling classes. I thought about joining, but couldn't find any of my old books. I think they're still packed away in the shed (ahh, the joys of moving) with all of my other dnd books. >.<

What was your old job?
Aye, drow should always be able to levitate. The joys of the earlier editions, the knowledge comes back fast... In the 3.5 game I am starting up, I'm twisting in some of the 1st and 2nd edition rules to make it a bit more interesting... First time learning D&D, it was the old editions, and I've spent the past four or so years becoming somewhat of a master DM of them... Still waiting for the day that someone lets a fireball off in an enclosed area.

I used to do customer support for banks that did online banking. They did the service through the company I worked for. A lot of people would come and go at the banks, so I would have to train their new employees on how to use the service. *sigh* It was a horrible job. But now I get to have an awesome one ^_^
@ astroninja: Cool! Hope you're having fun in it!
*gigglesnort* That will be awesome. I first learned on 2nd ed, then went back to 1st and played a little bit. I fought against going to 3rd, but eventually caved since no one else wanted to play the old editions anymore. I do like 3rd for teaching new players though, even if they did sort of castrate some of the races and classes, it's not quite as confusing as 2nd with all the percentage rolls

It always proves fun!

Hey it could be worse, I could be writing stuff in white text 3nodding
You know, be all ninja-ish with hidden text and all. Although that reminds me waaayyy too much of my elementary school and the invisible ink stuff that you needed the special ink to read. Heh, I used to have a lot of fun with that.

I tried to read the covo. It hurt my brain.
Hey, if you ever have question, I would be glad to assist. I am a seasoned DM, so I have a ton of random knowledge. I wonder if anyone will be smart enough to check for this...
