I have to say, recently, I have been. This man is most certainly the next Mccarthy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTFUSeLj0u8&feature=channel_pagehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szlLM5lCNJghttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4FgeVOabSgThis man, frankly, is deranged. His almost daily segment is called "The road to Socialism", where he calls out so called "Marxist" leaders, and warns the country that unless they revolt against their government, we will end up like Russia and China. http://www.esquire.com/the-side/richardson-report/glenn-beck-fox-news-030309 A simple Youtube search offers a person hundreds of frighting clips of Beck scaring his red neck following into once again treating Marxists as public enemy number 1. To put this into perspective, the 9/12 protests that occurred at capitol hill were organized by him. This guy has a lot of power over Conservatives. My boyfriend and I are travelers, and we are currently talking with his Canadian friend about getting him a job up there if this witch hunt continues, and Beck gets the revolt he wants. I am starting to feel very unsafe in this country. Does Glenn Beck scare the s**t out of anyone else?

This man is most certainly the next Mccarthy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTFUSeLj0u8&feature=channel_pagehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szlLM5lCNJghttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4FgeVOabSgThis man, frankly, is deranged. I am starting to feel very unsafe in this country. Does Glenn Beck scare the s**t out of anyone else? I live in Australia, so I don't suffer the massive anti-communism that most of the other members of this guild encounter. That said, knowing the general climate of the US, this stuff is worrying, but seems almost par for the course. The thing to recognise is that most of this stuff isn't merely partisan, as so many like to claim, but is racist. As I said in a post in EDP: People like to talk about how it is actually a partisan issue, but what is behind the surface opposition between democrats and republicans? The [false] idea that Democrats are going to give power to the blacks, jobs to the Mexicans, and money and services to foreign nationals of all stripes.
So is it partisan? Sure it is, but only because one party paints the other as succeptible to non-white influences. All this talk about socialism, however has a very important truth to it. Not that Obama is commie, far from it. The truth is that with the very clear colour line in the US, true political and legal equality (to say nothing of economic and social equality) for blacks can only be achieved through socialist revolution. Beck and those he serves [the right wing of US imperialism] recognise this, and mistakenly see the election of Obama as a precursor to socialism. The truth, however, is as I have said numerous times: Obama is not a communist or a socialist. No, he isn't, stop trying. He is trying to reform US capitalism a little to give it a facelift. THAT IS ALL. He is trying to make US capitalism look nice to all the people that the US has ******** over and to revive support, much like Jimmy Carter did after the defeat in Vietnam.
REAL communists HATE him for being just another capitalist leader, because we know that his presidency will give blacks the illusion that they can 'make it' just like him and that his presidency WILL provide the facelift that the US so sorely needs. Hell, just having a president that can speak a full sentence without getting tongue tied is a huge jump over the previous 8 years.* *This is my general copypasta reply to those that claim Obama is a socialist or communist, not directed at you.

I must admit I have my uneasiness. Going off of Trotsky's fascist theory, I have reason to believe Mr. Beck will be our new Fascist leader.

Nah dude. The bourgeois who run the healthcare insurance companies are ripshit. If the bill passes they lose billions. Naturally the bourgeois are going to oppose this in anyway they can. Another underlying factor is the way our economy is looking. In Chicago 3 weeks ago, 1000 workers lost their jobs, and In boston earlier in the week 200 hotel workers were laid off. This is on the surface a partisan issue but it does have an underlying cause.

I honestly don't believe this is a race issue as much as it is policy issue. Never before has a president entered an office and immediately attempted to change the fundamentals of something as big as health care. It turned everybody on their back sides and freaked them out- and they have the right to be freaked (even if they are misguided) America isn't used to shocks to their systems, and when they get them, they tend to react poorly. Right now, insurance companies are spending BILLIONS to pay off blue dog Democrats and produce smear material against his health care plan. A lot of Obama's problems have to do with who is spending money in this country, and for what reasons. Obama is actually being treated very similar to Kennedy in his time (who was also accused of being Marxist) In any case, I agree. Obama is NOT a Marxist. I am actually not a huge Obama fan myself (though I really, really would like to be insured again) Globally as I understand it, he is actually a center right winger.

While there is definitely a policy clash, that isn't what affects the mass of the opposition. They seem to be mobilised through a hatred of the Democrats and Obama. That is, the wing of the bourgeoisie that is threatened by these plans is taking advantage of the massive racism present in the US to mobilise against these policies which threaten it.

That is, the wing of the bourgeoisie that is threatened by these plans is taking advantage of the massive racism present in the US to mobilise against these policies which threaten it. :/ I suppose that is where we differ. Racism is honestly not as bad here as people make it out to be. I live in what I believe is the second most racially diverse city in the US, and racial tension isn't that bad. I'v never honestly met a white racist myself; though I have been the victim of reverse racism a few times, but I grew up on the border of middle class white suburb and a Chicago slum.....so needless to say, that is going to happen. Most young people grow up understanding that it is wrong, most politicians realized that it takes a minority vote to win an election, and most other people have moved on since then. Women and people of color arn't being forced down terribly by the man (in fact, studies show that the main reason that black kids can't get ahead these days is because their own community is not being supportive enough of their children's education; rather then bureaucrats not allowing children to get a decent education. Obama actually addressed this problem in a major speech he gave). Now, im not saying that racism and sexism don't exist, but I do think they are overblown here in America. People these days have the tendency to call discrimination before they even look at who is opposing them. We have a lot of people doing that here when it comes to race, and very recently, religion. I for one, don't believe in calling discrimination unless I am positive that the opposition is a racist/sexist/bigot first. Case in point. I believe that assholes like Rush Limbagh and Anne Coulter really are racists, but I am fairly certain that almost all of the US; including those in power, are not. "Racist" is a very, very dirty word that destroys a person's credibility, and should not be tossed around lightly without solid proof.

are you kidding? America is very racist. Though Racism plays a part in the demotion of the democrats, It isn't the determining, or underlying reason. (perhaps for some people, but not all)

I hate Glenn Beck. He's a paranoid, right-wing idiot who's completely terrified by anything different than what he believes.
I could see Beck becoming the next McCarthy, but I'd rather not even think about it. I personally hope to be out of this country when that happens.

Comrade Rob are you kidding? America is very racist. Though Racism plays a part in the demotion of the democrats, It isn't the determining, or underlying reason. (perhaps for some people, but not all) Again, Racist is a pretty heavy term. I don't think it's fair to decide that a person or person's is racist without some underline proof. It's not a very popular thing in this country to be racist, and is shamed heavily. Minorities are the first people chosen for jobs and colleges. We have minority heritage months and prime time networks. We have minorities in the senate and the house (all based on popular vote) and our own president (who was voted in popularly) is black. Race may have been a serious issue in the states back when it was okay to be a racist, but the days of the racist are numbered. The only reason we have serious racial issues these days is because both whites and minorities are guilty of segregating themselves. Look at a modern high school. Mot of the time, you will have people of the same race sitting together. This has less do to with all of the white kids being racist, and moreso, the common assumption that race means that we are all different, and can't possibly understand each other. As a woman, I have learned not to call sexism unless sexism is due. Otherwise, it's just an excuse for me to justify somebody being disagreeable or not getting my way. People need to look at racism the same way. Unless you can find very specific proof that many Americans are racist, or that a certain pundit is racist, it's a pretty unfair and inflammatory thing to argue. To restate, I am not suggesting that racism in this country is gone all together (most countries have race relation problems, progressive or not) but these issues are almost non existence compared to what was going on in the 60's. Today, if a black man wants to succeed, he can succeed (hey, he can become the president by popular vote biggrin ) It bothers me to no end that when people disagree or dislike a black man, it's always rooted to racism. Be fair, and call out racist when they are being racist; not when they don't like a guy. Racist. http://news.aol.com/newsbloggers/2007/08/25/rush-limbaughs-unebelievably-racist-comments/ Not racist, but retarded none the less. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxHKSHvMRWEAnyway, we should get back to the main point. That is, Glenn Beck. And oh, I just got a little chill down my spine :/

To interject on the racism issue here: 'Discrimination' is by no means the only way one can be racist (sexist...etc.). It goes much deeper than that. For example, there may not be discrimination in law when hiring people for a job, but the people hiring (especially if they're the 'dominant' group, as opposed to the subordinate) are still subject to all sorts of conscious or unconscious stereotypes and there is simply no way to police this. These images of the subordinate group are inherent in this society and originate from different sorts of places depending on what you're dealing with (race/ethnicity-related and sex-related).
It might be 'hidden', but oh boy, once you see it you can't stop seeing it everywhere. Utterly entrenched.

The rate of black and minority incarceration. The length of black and minority prison sentences. The rate of black and minority death sentencing. The increasing unemployment of the black population. The increasing devistation and militarisation of schools in black and minority neighborhoods...
It is pretty hard to not see racism in this situation. That is isn't as openly expressed as it was before makes it all the more insidious.

Louis-Auguste Robespierre The rate of black and minority incarceration. I completely agree with most of what you said, surprisingly enough. But wouldn't this particular issue be more a symptom than anything. I'm fairly sure poverty is linked to crime, therefore it is poverty which is related to this individual problem, and not racism. Quote: The increasing devistation and militarisation of schools in black and minority neighborhoods... I also don't know what you mean here. As in, turning schools into recruitment barracks or enforcing draconian rules and regulations on schools?

There have been studies that ROTC programs are normally found within a high majority black/minority neighborhoods.
