We are all supposed to be able to find and keep jobs free of discrimination of any sort. So despite the laws saying that you cannot discriminate why do so many of us find ourselves being discriminated against because of our beliefs? Why is it that Jews can have their holy days off work, (I’m using this as an example) but a pagan cannot? I asked my boss if I could have the eight sabbats as days off for religious reasons and I was told no, and yet my Jewish colleague was allowed to have her holy days off from work. What I find more irksome in the UK is that pagan paths are not recognised as ‘valid’ faiths, and yet Jedi is. Go figure.
So my questions to you are. Have you been discriminated against in the workplace because of your beliefs? If you have been discriminated against, how and was a reason given as to why? Proving you do not mind sharing such information. Also is there anything that you can do as an employee to stop such discrimination in the workplace? Have you ever been in a working environment that has been sympathetic towards your religious needs?

I would say that I have never been lucky enough to work for a company that has been sympathetic to my religious needs and some would actively bully and discriminate against me because of my beliefs. The worst situation I was in almost killed me. I was working on a cargo ship, four members of the crew were British, the rest Russian. I am not one to hide my beliefs and I wear my pentagram openly. The Russian members of the crew (all eastern orthodox Christians) did their utmost best to make my life a living hell, to the point where the cooks would deliberately put garlic in the food. Despite knowing that I am so highly allergic to garlic even a small amount will kill me. I have a weird quirk where I cannot actually taste or smell garlic, I only know I've eaten it when I start going through the allergic reactions. The captain was supposed to be keeping an eye on things but not once did he lift a finger to stop what was going, and yet there was nothing I could do to stop anything or prove that i was being bullied in this way.
I hope no one else has had it this bad

Yes
If you have been discriminated against, how and was a reason given as to why?
~ They refer to my religious jewelry as "after work attire" and say I can't wear it yet allow people to wear crosses and stars of david.
~ Always decorate for Hanukkah and Christmas, but to hell if I can put up anything for Yule. (goes for any holiday)
~ Can't get off for religious days, but others can if it can get covered.
Reasons?: who knows... was told my religious wear and religious references were offensive, forget that the menorah that was lit for all of Dec offended me.
Also is there anything that you can do as an employee to stop such discrimination in the workplace?
Well am a manager now so muahahaha I'll truly put all holiday stuff out instead of just two so no one gets feathers ruffled.
