Breaking Ground By KiMiGee
"Panay News! Maasahan mo! Tunay na balita ang hatid sa inyo!"
This catchy jingle has been one of the main advertisements in the semi-famous radio station that got eveyone talking. Everytime you'd ask a typical Ilonggo rocker what they're listening to, you'd be sure they'd say, "Radio One eh! Syempre! (Radio One, of course!)"
Starting from a meager, recycled and worn-down radio joint, this station worked its way to the bottom spot to the number 2 spot in just one year. True to their catch phrase "Kahit walang budget!", they cater to the younger audiences of Iloilo, even if this market didn't seem the conventional one. This ploy worked, however, as it got Radio One grew nearer to coveting the top spot in the ratings.
Fuelled by DJ's Smarty Sam, Crazy Chris, Lazy Daisy, Wacky Willy and, the manager, Jay Walker, the station also had humor not found in any other station in the city. The program that really boosted their triumphs was the phenomenal "Tunog Pinoy" hosted by Wacky Willy. This program featured filipino rock and alternative songs that other stations were hesitant to play. Wacky's show claimed the top spot in the category of the most-listened to radio show in Western Visayas!
That's not enough, though, this station is also home to the flourishing of the Ilonggo Indie Scene. Manila bands that usually travel to Iloilo are all aware that the music scene in the area are growing in strength day by day. Radio One is the only known station in the area that produces their own concerts and events. Wacky Willy is known to have made the road beside Robinsons Iloilo a party place! "Paseo Iloilo" is the main venue for all of Radio One's Indie rock events.
Radio One- a brave station breaking ground in Iloilo City. It's nice to see these humble, little companies working to put a label on the Indie music scene. I hope we see more of these efforts to make people feel that warm and fuzzy feeling you get when you hear a good song. They work hard, but stay humble. They do little, but change a lot. And most of all, they contaminate the masses with the branch of magic known as rock.
This station gave me back the hope I lost once, believe it or not. It awakened the buried passion I felt for music. It made me see the beauty of drum sticks and guitar strings in a new light. It was like a third family to me and it gave me a third home I returned to every saturday.
Nostalgia? Yeah right. ^ Sample lng toh, so hindi masyadong okei xp ^

post ko sa blog ko noon... music related, pero sadly not OPM...
i guess everybody knows who john lennon is, right? to those hiding under a rock all this time, he was one of the beatles, the four english boys who completely influenced, if not changed, the way we perceive popular music. he was one of the frontmen, with paul mccartney being the other one. he was the bright, rebellious, wild and often misunderstood genius, while paul was the baby-faced crowd-pleaser who caters to authorities while john "******** up". it is a tried and tested formula to put two great but opposite songwriters in a band to rack up cash and the beatles were testament to that.
anyway, tons of albums and arguments later, the beatles finally split up after recording "Abbey Road". everyone was fed up with everybody else, lives are much more complicated with the wives and children, and their music was not such a good motivating force anymore for them to still stick together. so like any other band with already large egos and a lot of money to spare, they fell apart. their Jan. 30, 1969 concert on the rooftops of apple (their label) in england was the last time they performed as the legendary fab four.
the seventies found john already in the united states with yoko, doing songs like "Imagine", "How Do You Sleep?" and "Give Peace A Chance". "Mind Games", "Rock and Roll" and "Walls and Bridges" were made while he and yoko had a 14 month "falling-out" with each other.
on October 9, 1975, yoko (who already was long reunited with john at the time) gave birth to john's second son, sean (julian, being the older one, was john's son with cynthia, his first wife) and john dropped out of the music scene for 5 long years to be a simple father and husband in their Dakota apartment in New York.
but being john lennon, he can't live that long without making music. he made an album's worth of songs in 1980 in a span of 3 weeks and released them under the title "Double Fantasy" and until today still remains as one of his best solo albums.
he was still not satisfied with Double Fantasy's success and was in the process of releasing another album entitled "Milk and Honey" when one of the most horrible events in music history took place on December 8, 1980. mark david chapman stood still after firing 5 shots into john lennon, waiting to be arrested. seems like he was aware of the fact that he had extinguished one of the brightest talents the world has ever seen.

Sky Church: Hazed. Wasted. And Blown Away. Courtesy of Ground Magazine
By now, only the brain-dead are unaware and have been unwarned of the sheer brutality of Skychurch, arguably the heaviest and one of the best bands in the land of the RP. Through the years, many bands have come and gone, many trends were started and cursed by the very same people who were responsible for 'em, but Skychurch has held its ground as an uncompromising unit of musicians who could care less about such triviality. Which is why the strength endures, and only gets better and better with the passing of time.
Formed "since birth," as brothers Russell, Robert and Rommel would have it said, the band had an early edge- starting out playing tight sets and places all over the country with their youngest (being drummer Robert) under 15 years of age. Bassist/vocalist Russell and guitarist Rommell, the eldest, alongside with Robert, proved their worth despite a failed attempt in acquiring formal music training (due mainly to absence of their so-called music teachers) as they taught themself how to play grinding progressions and intricate arrangements. In fact, that was part of the charm- audiences couldn't believe that the band, barely into their teens with a collective average age of seveteen years, was showcasing skill and excellence in musicianship through the heaviest music, influenced by metal groups such as Slayer, Pantera, Cannibal Corpse and the hardcore of bands like Agnostic Front, Sick of It All and Madball yet written and given a personal touch as evident in their originals. Their parents, supportive of their deisre to slug it out on a professional level were supportive as they funded the band's gear, equipment and managed them under the condition that they finish school. And with that support and the band's keeping their word, they went on an unstoppable juggernaut of gigs...championing over older contemporaries in one too many band competitioons and winning the applause and recognition from their peers in the strong underground metal/hardcore scenes. Robert had become (and is still) regarded as one of the best drummers in the country, as Russell and Rommell's level of musicianship, to this day can't be touched nor duplicated.
..and the highlights of the band's career did not stop there. after championing the RJ Junior Jam competition (amongst hordes of bands who were older and more experienced), the band rose to further infamy as being "the kids who jason newsted (then-bassist of Metallica) jammed with at the infamous club dredd, and as the fastest and heaviest group to be signed by a major label. their debut, 1996's Urge of The Human Device was a landmark release that shook up the mainstream music scene and arguably planted the idea that metal was indeed, what the kids wanted to hear- as audiences grew tired of the mindless, namby-pamby pop/rock/alternative leanings of the time- for here was a band that wrote their own songs, played what they wanted to play and did not compromise despite their innocence. The album produced massive blow-by-blow originals embraced entirely by listeners not onloy in Manila, but in the provinces especially, as the flagship track "Kamao," was obviously written in the native tongue...yet another first of its kind. More gigs followed, and supporters grew in number over the years, as the band grew up with its fans.
The band's second release, the hardcore-influenced Unaware, Unwarned was yet another milestone worthy of recognition as the nu metal movement started making a racket with the major labels. The band would hold its ground- the speed and the aggression were a permanent part of the package, and still, they refused to change their direction while being open to musical and personal maturity as they wrote positive pieces about the straightedge movement, the importance of unity and self-empowerment, also avoiding the typical trappings of the metal genre. it was again, a success, as more and more out of town shows were booked, and a rather unavoidable and reluctant recognition was coming from all over: rock radio couldn't ignore them, despite its attempts and rather ridiculous agenda to "soften up" the genre with pop hooks and mundane tastes, and musicians from different subgenres of rock couldn't find anything bad to say about the brothers dela cruz. they were...they still are, among the best.
after trouble typical with record labels started surfacing (Star Records claimed that both albums weren't selling- despite the fact that there was so much demand for it as record shops all over the country ran out of copies of both albums to sell), the band moved on as a live unit, and recently, as an independent recording artist, releasing a limited number of copies of the Euthanasia EP to lucky followers in Manila, Olongapo and Cagayan de Oro late last year. The track, which is vintage Skychurch material, was a return-to-roots track that again, featured the blistering progressions of Robert, Russell and Rommell....a showcae of furious and hyperactive drumming, killing riffs and uncompromising vocals. This was also the release that featured the addition of guitarist Joey Dizon, who had been tapped in frequently over the past few years as a session guitar player as Rommell went on to become a full-fledged doctor. The Euthanasia EP, now completely sold out, was testament that there's more to come.
Currently, the band is working on new material- as unreleased singles like "Respect," "Surrender," "Divide and Conquer" and two completed-yet-untitled tracks are being played and showcased to its hungry and loyal fan base. The band, though hesistant to give a confirmed date of release of new material, is confident that the time is soon. Listeners need not worry, knowing that Skychurch has no plans of ever slowing down or stopping. The music remains the same- the way everybody knows it and likes it. There's is no other way to do it...and nobody else can do it like Skychurch does.
