All the regions in pokemon are named after the different ergions in Japan. There is actually one region left in Japan that pokemon hasn't used yet, which makes some believe that another game is going to be made.

I mean, hell, they made GOD a pokemon. I don't see how you can go much farther than that. O___O

Okay so I was wrong, Kanto is a real region in Japan, but all the other regions are based off of other regions in japan.
Interestingly enough, I was also wrong about the number of regions. There are eight regions in all, two of these regions can be divided into even more regions.
