Earthrealm

Earthrealm is one of many realms that were formed after the Elder Gods shattered the One Being. Earthrealm has been the target of frequent attempts at conquest, because it is thought to be the jewel of the cosmos and an important universal power node. Because of this, the Elder Gods have appointed a deity to protect the realm from harm. For countless centuries this has been Raiden, though other gods such as Fujin also play a role in this. Furthermore, the Shaolin Temple of the Light was formed to train mortals in martial arts and prepare them to defend their world from evil. More recent organizations such as the reformed Lin Kuei or the Special Forces play a similar role. Earthrealm was nearly destroyed millions of years BMK in a war between Shinnok and Raiden, and then verged on the brink of collapse in 3 AMK during Shao Kahn's short conquest. After his invasion was foiled, Earthrealm has served as an inspiration to other conquered realms of Outworld.

Edenia

As its name suggests, the world of Edenia closely resembles the garden of Eden. A very fertile world with slowly aging inhabitants, Edenia is a feudal monarchy ruled by Queen Sindel and her daughter Princess Kitana. The earliest known ruler of Edenia was King Jerrod, the husband of Sindel and the father of Kitana, but was killed Shao Kahn. Edenia also has a military called the 'Edenian Resistance,' in which Jade is the general. Edenia is also home of the 'Edenian Freedom Fighters,' which is too led by Jade. The Edenian Freedom Fighter's purpose is to enforce Edenian law, fight evil, and offer shelter and protection to those in need. Edenia is known for its Edenian Pie, loved by many inhabitants, including those that are not native to Edenia, such as Shao Kahn's guards. Edenia is also home of the large 'Edenian Ruins,' though the location is not directly stated.

Chaosrealm

Chaosrealm is a world where chaos is practiced by its inhabitants as a religion, so, unlike other realms, it has no form of government whatsoever. Therefore, the Chaosrealmers reflect their world's chaotic nature, and hold absolute freedom and change in the highest esteem, relishing in chaos and living in an absolute anarchy. It is the polar opposite of Orderrealm. In a twist of irony, it is precisely Orderrealm which seeks to control Chaosrealm for its vast reserves of water. According to Mortal Kombat: Deception's Konquest mode, the Chaosrealm is also home to a pool of aging located at A-5 of the realm at the end of a small labyrinth, which appears to age anyone that ventures through it, or establishes them to believe 'they have changed' or they 'feel older.' The Chaosrealm is also home of a cemetery that Chaosrealmers hold sacred. Because chaos is practiced as a religion, many temples are found throughout Chaosrealm, where holy men are seen praying in front of the entrance. In a geographical standpoint, Chaosrealm seems to defy normal laws of physics, thus concluding it as a world floating rock formations. As a result, Chaosrealmers use highly advanced portals to travel to each formation and reach their destinations. Apparently, Chaosrealm is said to have been a normal world until at some point in the distant past, the God of Chaos unleashed "the Tempest." This was responsible for the realm's transformation and its fragmentation, and is also thought to have caused collective amnesia among the inhabitants of the realm.

Orderealm

As the polar opposite of Chaosrealm, Seido is a place where law, order and structure prevail above anything else. It appears to be a clear, advanced, highly urbanized and civilized world. In a geographical standpoint, Seido, the realm of Order appears to be nothing more than a highland made up of many narrow, bridge-like roads that rests upon on an unknown agent. Incredibly long trees appear to grow from the bottom of the roads, liquid water appears from fountains despite having no means of formation, and small streams of water flow into non-existence. This may explain, though not stated, that Seido may also have lowlands, or it may be be due to the realm's magical properties. As a result of it's structure, many buildings rest upon narrow walkways, and the inhabitants are well-adapted, as none show any fear of falling. Seido is divided into various towns decided by color, such as Bluetown, Greentown, Redtown and Goldtown. This does not merely apply to the road itself, but also to houses and huts in the area as well. Seido is also home to gemstones, such as the Green Gems, Gold Nuggets, Fire Opals, and Winterstones. Each gem shares the same color of the town they are located and vary in value and rarity. Because of Seido's strict policies, the realm is often at war.

Seido takes its name from the Japanese word seidō (制度) meaning a system or organization.

Netherealm

Netherealm appears to be, like Outworld, a realm composed of thousands of different layers. In the Mortal Kombat universe, deceased souls or entities who have committed major crimes descend into the Netherealm to undergo endless torture. In fact, one cannot enter the Netherealm without being evil or have a soul tainted with evil. It is an alternative, more generic name for the Christian concept of Hell, as one of its former rulers was Lucifer (whose name appears only in the Sub-Zero game manual but not in-game). It is also described as "the darkest region of reality", and is inhabited by demons, monsters, and beings of the purest evil.

Heaven

As its name suggests, the Heavens are the realm where the gods reside, and the destination for the souls of those who have died as morally righteous beings. Nothing is known about this mysterious realm, except that it is one of the two realms that is infinite in space, the other one being its popular opposite, the Netherrealm. It could be said to be strongly close to the Christian concept of Heaven.

--Void

Referenced as a mortal by-pass into the Heavens (the residence of the Elder Gods), the Void represents the "white space" of the universe, despite its actual appearance remaining unknown. Soulnados (passageways for souls of the deceased) are depicted as possible gateways into the Void, achievable through "breaking free" of the aggressive spirits within them and slipping into non-existence.

Outworld

Outworld's known history goes back millions of years and points at Onaga, the Dragon King, as its first ruler. Though he would eventually be supplanted by Shao Kahn, they both shared the same visions of expanding Outworld by taking other realms by force. Unwittingly, both were being controlled by the echos of the One Being. Outworld is an empire that stretches out over numerous realms which have been magically annexed. Despite the despotism both emperors have displayed, Outworld is in a constant state of turmoil, more so under Shao Kahn than it was under Onaga. Outworld's primary landscapes appear to consist of Outworld is a large realm, mostly consisting of barren wastelands, deserts, pools of acid, dense forests with animated faces, and high, mysterious mountain peaks. Small villages are scattered throughout the landscape, and like Edenia, the realm teems with magic. Beyond the imperial palace and the city of Lei Chen, no real metropolis seem to exist on Outworld. Outworld also houses a brewery, specializing in creating 'Outworld Wine,' popularly drank by master Bo' Rai Cho. It's often rumored amongst many Outworld inhabitants that Earthrealm's rice wine 'puts Outworld Wine to shame.' Commuters also ride the Dragonfly, said to be the fastest form of transportation across the vast expanses of Outworld, aside from sorcery. There are many of these flying transports, each with its own set of destinations.

--Zaterra

Zaterra was home to Reptile's race of Saurians before it was annexed by Outworld through ten consecutive victories in Mortal Kombat. It used to be ruled by a matriarch. Her influence on the other members of the Saurian race is so strong that over time, they begin to revert back to a more primitive consciousness, the longer they are separated from her presence, which also affects their ability to maintain a humanoid appearance.

Vaeternus

This dimension was home to the vampires and one of their kind, Nitara, sought a mysterious orb within Outworld which would release her dimension from Outworld. She was successful in her goal and freed her home realm through the aid of Cyrax.

~Races~

* Centaurian
The Centaurians are a race very similar to the Centaur of legend. Motaro is the only known member of the Centaur race. In Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, the Centaur race was apparently transformed into Minotaurs due to a curse brought upon them by the Shokan.

* Cryomancer
The Cryomancer's are an Outworld race. Apparently they look as humans although Cryomancer's can control ice, their arms look frozen, and seem to be subliming.

* Cyborg
Cyborgs are some characters who have been turned into robots to improve their performance. The procedure began when the Lin Kuei clan decided to automate their warriors in Mortal Kombat 3.

* Demon
Demons are treated as a separate species in the Mortal Kombat universe. Quan Chi, Ashrah, Sareena, Kia, Shang Tsung, and Jataaka are known demons. They can hide their appearance under a human façade, but otherwise seem to be the same as Oni. Quan Chi was originally a Oni, until he became a demon with his mastery over sorcery and magic.

* Dragon
Little is known about the Dragons of Mortal Kombat. They are seldom mentioned, and there are only three possible known members of the race: Onaga, Orin, and Caro. Onaga was proclaimed the Dragon King, although it is unknown whether he was given this title by his elusive brethren or whether it is self-proclaimed.

Onaga possess some similar physical characteristics to his possible brethren, such as having scales. Similarly to Orin and Caro, Onaga can breath fire. Onaga is able to raise the dead with a power given to him by his heart, and has made his army allegedly undefeatable because he continuously revives them when they are slain. This army was later uncovered by Quan Chi, and was used as the weapon of the Deadly Alliance. Although it is unknown where they originate from, the most likely place is Outworld. Dragons all lay eggs, and apparent from Onaga, even the males do. As there is little other trace of any other Dragons in the Mortal Kombat universe, it is possible that most of them were wiped out, similar to Cryomancers or the Saurians.

* Edenian
Edenians are a human-like species that dwell in Edenia. At one time, Shao Kahn merged Edenia with Outworld to expand his tyranny. Some of those in the Edenian Royal Family battled for it and it was eventually returned to its original state. Edenians have very long lives, as Kitana is 10,000 years old and still considered young. Edenians also possess special magical skills (for example, Jade can do various wind tricks, Sindel can levitate and manipulate sonic waves, and so on). It is said Edenian's long life span, strength, and nobility are due to being descendants of gods. Notable Edenians are Sindel, the Queen of Edenia; Kitana, Sindel's daughter and Princess of Edenia; Jade, who is Kitana's best friend as well as the leader of the Edenian army; Taven and Daegon, sons of the Edenian protector god Argus; and the Edenian traitors Rain and Tanya.

* Elemental
Elementals are creatures who have mastered abilities with a certain element. Their appearance differs depending on which element they have mastered. Blaze is the only known elemental, and he has mastered fire; as such he is portrayed as a being of fire.

* God
They are much the same as the Elder Gods, only less powerful. Raiden, God of Thunder; Fujin, God of Wind; and the Water God, Fire God, and Earth God are known members of the species. Raiden was initially Earthrealm's protector, but he later handed this capacity over to Fujin after his ascension to the status of an Elder God. Unlike the Elder Gods, regular Gods seem happy or feel needed to interfere in the realms' destinies regularly, considering the aforementioned positions and actions of the known Gods above. Being less powerful than Elder Gods, normal gods have limitations. Gods are not allowed to participate in mortal affairs unless in mortal form. Thus, for a god to participate in Mortal Kombat, they are required to occupy a human form. In addition, gods cannot interfere in the affairs of other realms as they not only hold any rule in foreign domain, but they also risk losing any powers they had in their native realm.

* Human
The majority of Mortal Kombat characters belong to the human race, although many of them possess superhuman qualities, such as the ability to control fire or turn invisible. Most humans originate from the Earthrealm, although they have been known to be found and originate from other realms. Generally, those who come from the other realms are those that possess the most supernatural powers and characteristics. Because they possess a soul, they were the target for Shao Kahn's extermination squad and Shang Tsung's soul devouring. The humans are responsible for repelling Outworld's forces and saving Earthrealm's existence.

* Minotaur
The Minotaurs are a relatively new species formed after the Shokan placed a curse upon the Centuarians which transformed many of them, like Motaro, into a bipedal race.

* Oni
These creatures appear as large monstrous creatures possessing sharp claws, wild hair and usually two long horns growing from the sides of their heads though appear to mostly Human in shape. Despite this being the case, there are some that are more ape-like and burly with glowing yellow eyes.

Oni are said to roam the wastelands of Netherrealm, always on the search for souls to torment for their own pleasure. Those that dwelled on Shang Tsung's island appeared to demonstrate cannibalism by eating their dead. Larger more powerful members of the Oni are known as an Oni Warlord.

* Saurian
They are reptilian humanoids who evolved from the dinosaurs. Standing on two legs and having bigger brains than their ancestors, they have the potential for more complex thought. They can also appear to alter their form to become invisible or look human. They have a matriarchal society, and any Saurian that has drifted away from the influence of the matriarch or a surrogate slowly begins to lose their ability to look human. Their saliva is compromised of powerful corrosive fluids that can easily burn right through steel or human flesh, much like acid. This acid is so powerful that it even kills other Saurians.

* Shokan
The Shokan are large creatures that dwarf Humans in size, and boast incredible strength. They are distinguished by each possessing two to six massive arms complimented by three digits on each hand. Their skin textures vary from almost resembling that of a human's, to sporting the appearance of tiger skin.

Their civilization and society is structured under a monarchy with a king ruling their people with their heir being a prince in line for the throne. In Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins, its shown that multiple heirs to the throne must compete with one another and demonstrate their ruthlessness by fighting to the death. The victor thus becomes the ruling crown-prince who will eventually inherit the throne. Furthermore, on a single particular day, it was customary to give the King a present.

Among the Shokan, there is one rule that surpasses all others: survival of the fittest and most ruthless.

* Spectre
Spectres are beings that are reborn as unliving warriors. These beings wield powers that associate with the Netherrealm: Fire (Scorpion). Spectres are different from Wraiths although they are from the same realm. Usually spectres look more human than Wraiths.

* Tarkata
The Tarkatans are an interracial breed of warriors, a mix of a race from Outworld and a race from the Netherealm. They have long pointy teeth, large mouths, and blades protruding from their bodies, especially their arms. Baraka is their leader, and it's revealed Mileena is half-Tarkatan as well. The Tarkatans are a nomadic species, mainly populating Outworld's wastelands, but it's discovered that they come from the Netherrealm and migrated to Outworld. This race possesses a love for battle and serves whomever is in command (Shao Kahn, the Deadly Alliance, etc.).

* Undead
The Undead were creatures who were killed in life and lived within the infernal depths of the Netherrealm. These beings were typically skeletal looking creatures who were forever to be tormented within their fiery home Realm. Some were capable of ripping apart bloody chunks from their body and throw them at their enemies as a form of grenade attack. When encountering living creatures, the Undead often converged on fresh meat in order to devour it. Typically, they ambushed prey by suddenly emerging from the ground.

* Vampire
The Vampire, also known as Moroi, are a species that were native to the Realm of Vaeternus. The vampire race were Human in appearance but possessed sharp fangs as well as wings. They were not an evil race but neutral as they required the blood of living beings in order to survive. The race were known to be incredibly old as well as have very detailed histories which were chronicled by their Elders. These archives were so detailed that they contaied prophecies that encompassed Edenia in relation to the Pyramid of Argus and even had knowledge on the Saurians of Zaterra.

* Wraith
Wraiths, are beings who have previously died only to be "reborn" as inhuman warriors. They are not to be confused with the undead, who are best described as living corpses. These beings wield powers associated with the Netherealm: shadows and darkness (Noob Saibot). Wraiths are less human looking than Spectres.

* Zombie
A zombie is a reanimated corpse, brought back to life by magic.

Dark skies gave away to glowing warmth. The light began to stretch her fingers across the land as the early morning passed. Awaking at the start of dawn, Shujinko sat up on his sleeping mat, rubbing his groggy eyes. Taking his time, his tired body arose. He walked outside as usual to watch the sun peek out over the horizon. A duchenne smile rose the wrinkles of his tired face, beaming with brilliance.

"How I do enjoy watching the sun just as she shows her face for the first time," he said, admiring the beauty for a moment.

After having a cup of green tea, the elder went into the market. Once there, he browsed amongst the fruits and vegetables to look for some ingredients for a dish he wanted to make for his friends. For a moment, he sighed, unable to think about how his life may have been had he not fallen for Onaga's trap.

No doubt the Dragon King may have never been released in the first place. He would have learned combat by other means and his body...he would have been considerably younger had he his age not been advanced twice by supernatural forces. It almost distressed him, but then he made a point to recall he had right his mistake. He had defeated Onaga, right?

Rage sat amongst the Edenian Ruins, the world of Edenia had a nice landscape and he felt a sort of connection to it. Rage's appearance would be easily noticed in an enhabited area and the potential of people being alarmed by his appearance was high, it was too much of a risk to join civilisation. Rage also believed that commotion would hinder his progress to finding his perpose for being in the world, thus he kept away from civilisation and wandered, searching for something.

After he had finished shopping, Shujinko returned home to leave his groceries only to walk towards the White Lotus Temple. It was there that he was to consult with the monks on their efforts in protecting Earthrealm. After consulting the men, he walked off into the forest and stopped by a shrine. "It is time I see how things are going in Edenia. I have a meeting to get to with Queen Sindel and Princess Kitana," he said to himself, then entered the Nexus through a hidden entrance.

Walking into the other side, memories flashed. He had come here many times before since Onaga had first tricked him. Even know the bitter memories came to no end.

With a clouded mind he entered the portal to Edenia, appearing in the center of town.

Scouting the Living Forest, Rain silently crept in careful pursuit of Sektor. Rain was one one of a scouting party, but the cyborg's visit had gotten Rain's curiosity. Unfortunately, Sektor seemed all too aware for he started to run off. Growling, the prince ran off after Sektor.
