Ah, sweep-picking. This technique is considered by many to be the most difficult to learn. Personally, however, I think that it gets much easier once you get the motion of your two hands synchronized. I just recently got the hang of it. So how about you guys? How long did it take you to learn to sweep fluidly? And how do you use sweep-picking? Like to combine it with sliding or string-skipping? Discuss and show off here. :3

I'll try to upload some audio later. :3

Oh yes, I have returned (Not that I was particularly famous or anything, but it has been a while).

It took me about a week. I think it's a bit over rated personally, or rather over used. I prefer to use it in short spurts for buildups, that sparidically like. it's not really a center piece item for me.

Wow. No elongated metaphor, no sex innuendo, not even a serial line. I must be getting... lame

I still need to work on my sweeping. I've been practicing a lot lately, and I can just tell it's going to take me atleast half a year.
For some reason, I find wider sweeps ( 4 - 5 string wide ) easier than triads. Don't know why though.

A common sweeping issue. The 4 string upwards SEEM easier (I stress seem, we'll get to that) because the performer gets that little extra build up, and that nano second of extra thought it can take to pull it off in the beginning stage.

the problem is that, although it seems easier, because your building up in this manner, your actually practising to sweep out of time unintentionally. That's not to say you shouldn't jump in the deep end, far from it. You can sweep the full breadth of the board then really, you can sweep. But keep the below tips in mind when practising and you can't go wrong.

AAGARKS TOP SWEEPING TIPS:
Metronome: You should be practicing most to all of your pieces and exercises with a metronome. The earlier you get into this the better. One benefit is that it can help you realise 'real' timing, to get your sweeps nice and tight.

Start slow: Again, a standard that should be implemented at all times. Practicing techniques quickly, especially techniques you use quickly, makes for sloppy techniques. Sit down, slow it down and nail it, then build it up.

Chillax: The third in our stream of generic advice. You should be keeping yourself relaxed anyway, but straining your muscles when sweeping is THE worst time to do it. You can't sweep i your not fluid. The whole point of the technique is fluidity.

Consider the pick: How the pick is held should vary from style to style. For sweeping, some guitarists like to tilt the pick to around 45 degrees, instead of the standard flat. This is because it offers alot less friction, making the sweep alot smoother. Personally, I practice both styles of picking, and I like to interchange for emphasis at different points.

For anyone just starting sweeping, a good song that has just come into light of the world again is Welcome home - Coheed and Cambria. If you don't know it, it's the song used on the '9' trailer. Another good first shot song is Dethklok's 'Duncan Hill Coffee Jingle'. it sounds tough, but it's two of the most used sweeping shapes and, with good practice, is a good one to start on.

I will also try to get up a link for a workout sheet I have for sweeping. I was given it by a wise old guitar sage...

Ok, an Australian College teacher. But really, is there much difference?

Back when I first started playing guitar a friend of mine showed me the C Major chord on the 12th fret then showed me how to sweep it. He told me I was a "******** guitar demon" because apparently I got it right on my first few tries, and never really faltered since....

well, that is one of the easiest sweeps to learn, thats the first one i learned also, but then i just started goin all over the place using the same cord progression, just on defferent frets, after i learned that, and i started moving my fingers around, and stretching them almost beyond their limits, that always helps. lol

I like sweeping when it is done in good taste, otherwise it gets really boring and bland. Example of awesome sweeping is Selkies the Endless Obsession by Between the buried and me. One thing I think that sounds cool, is when you omit the 3rd from an arpeggio. Doing this gives the arpeggio a really spacey sound, because the arpeggio no longer has a sense of direction. This is because the 3rd determines if it is a major or minor arpeggio. try it out, I think you'll like it too.

I mastered sweep picking before I left the womb.
