Anyone else a fan of Terry Pratchett? I love his books and have read them all to date, including his kids novels. His Discworld series is phenomenal. Who are your favourite characters? Which are your favourite novels? I particularly like the witches, the city watch, Death and Rincewind as my favourite characters.

Unfortunately Terry had been diagnosed with Alzheimers, and I greatly sympathise. I'm sorry to hear someone with such a great imagination is suffering with the disease.

i love the Discworld series, they're just ace!! i haven't read all of them but my favourite characters are Susan and Death and my favourite books are Carpe Jugulum and the Tiffany Aching series.

i saw a documentary about Pratchett and his Alzheimers. it was horrible to see the degeneration of a man who so clearly intelligent and and values being independant so much.

I love Terry Pratchett and have read almost all his books- I can't seem to get my hands on a copy of Wintersmith- my favorite character is probably Sam Vimes, although Moist von Lipwig is pretty cool too. My favorite books are the Watch ones- especially Thud!

Have any of you seen the movies they made for the TV? Colour of Magic and The Hogfather? Both were brilliant...really well made. I particularly loved the guy who played Mr Teatime in the movie..he was really really brilliant.

I've heard about the movies but never seen them, do you know if they aired in the States? I was under the impression they hadn't. And I've heard the guy who played Mr. Teatime was good.

I think the Colour of Magic played here, I know the Hogfather did and it was absolutely fantastic! Unfortunately, it seems like every time I go to read any of the books something else comes up xp

I'm not sure, I dunno if they've been released on DVD there even if they haven't been on TV?

gonk Why was I not informed he had a new book out?

I was wandering around in the campus bookstore yesterday and there was Unseen Academicals on the shelf, and I was like "Ohmigoshhowlonghaveyoubeenout?!" I have a copy now, but I can't let myself read it until my midterms are over. crying

lol my dad always preorders them from the internet. there's a discworld newsletter too, I'll see if I can remember what website it was on if you want updates.

I think Unseen Academicals is more entertaining than his last few because I think they have been quite serious and thoughtful...while this one does have some serious undertones in there it's funnier I think..more light-hearted. It's great.

I still haven't started reading it yet... but fun is good.

Not that deep and thinky is bad, I rather like his deep thinky books- at least when Vimes is the one doing the thinking, I understand his brain. When Granny Weatherwax gets all thinky I tend to feel rather out of my depth.

I don't mind the "deep" stuff either, because even those his books are comical there's meanings behind everything...you can see our own society in the characters of the Discworld. However I like it to be mixed with comedy and I think in his later books they have more of a serious tone and less comedy.

That's true- Thud in particular was really dark. (Although that's probably my favorite recent book.)

Yeah that's probably the most serious one he's written I think. It didn't really appeal to my tastes and was one of my least favourites.
