I'm filling out a form for a Communist club on campus (after being shocked and appalled that there weren't any), and I need help with writing up part of the form.
I've had a few ideas, but I haven't settled on any that I liked. I want the guild's opinion.
The question is thus:
"Why and how will [the club] benefit the [university] community?"

That all depends on what your uni/college politics are like there... do you have student unions? If so, what do they do? etc.

Student Union's mandatory. You can't opt out of it I believe... I don't even know what they do though...

Well ours WERE Mandatory until the Libs got their way (and consequently killed a lot of good things... actually, Voluntary Student Unionism seems to have killed the Young Liberals at my uni, so I can't complain too much...)
As for what they do... hm, presumably political activity is included. Oooours don't do much anymore, but that's because they are penniless now. ='( Hm...what did they do before besides argue? Well they organise protests as well as campus activities. I know a whole bunch of people in uni politics, I should probably just ask them. rolleyes

Campus activities, member recruitment, run a newsletter, perhaps offer support for other students in their degrees. It all depends on your ambition and the interest you can garner.

Kudos, comrade, for wanting to start up a club at your university. I thought about doing the same thing here, but I don't have the time (I'm in two other clubs) or the money to start one up.
As for your question, I think the best response for that would be, "...to supply the students who are interested in the subjects of communism/socialism to come together and discuss and find fellowship."
If there's already other political clubs you could say, on the issue of how it would benefit the university's community, that it would help bring about a fairness to the political spectrum of the campus.
Hope it helps you stir up some ideas.

Hehe, there's two groups at my university: (Australian) Socialist Alternative and some sort of Democratic Socialist group (which is rather small, I think). Sadly none of these appeal to me. D:
Also @ Curse: I know you're a couple of years younger, but do you remember what student unions did when they had funding? (Hint: they're not exactly 'unions' as such). Fee extortion? Pfft, it's as much 'fee extortion' as taxing people for welfare is. Well now the unis have to get that student welfare money from somewhere else or the services die...

I would say the best step would be to find the leader(s) of some of the clubs on your campus and have them tell you the ins and outs of creating a campus group. For example my campus has a long drawn out process and paperwork to fill out before the group will be recognized, be given use of campus facilities, and funding. It is often very difficult to complete this procedure without somebody who is familiar with it.
Then finding people isn't terribly difficult. I would look first in the more liberal groups on campus, history students or departments with a social emphasis (social work for example) are good grounds too. Also, any political context where you declare yourself to be a communist will draw attention, and people willing to be educated.
