This thread will serve the purpose of being a discussion area for survival in apoclyptic situations as well as every day situations. Though I am posting this, Jekoza will be the overall moderator of this thread, seeing as it was his idea. And with that, I will let him fill you in on the rest of the details.

The point of this is to, as stated, discuss survival techniques in situations like; zombie apocalypse, sun goes out, ice age, alien invasion, world flood, and anything else you can think of.

In a situation where the entire world floods over, i would make an attempt to steal a large yacht and rig it with solar pannels, that will cover transportation and power. I'll get a shitload of marintime and normal day supplies and stock up on seeds and plants for food. I'll also do a good bit of fishing too. (think water world)

First and foremost, I want to say that if the sun goes out, I'm probably not gonna bother trying to survive for long. With no sun, this world will have zero heat and zero light and practically all plant life will die in a short amount of time. Now, that is if such a thing as the sun going out were possible. Our sun is within the category that it will one day become a small Red Giant Star and then end with a bang that'll wipe out this solar system.
Another such even that I would bother surviving long for would be a world flood. If it was a true world wide flood, such as that in the movie Waterworld I'd be rather screwed. The main reason being I cannot swim sadly. On top of that I severly dislike large bodies of water for that reason. I may try lasting it out but I will most deffinitely not do so on my own.
My As for the others, I shall post more in depth posts on them later.

Well if the sun went out it would probably induce an ice age anyway, but the only way anything would survive then is by going underground. Were not really screwed if we become cavernous. Lets face it, if u go deep u can get fresh water, heat, power, and then u can bring food things down there too. Mostly humans will probably evolve into more nocturnal-esque creatures. Larger ears and eyes, better senses.

However, we'd also have to set up very large and extensive "sun" rooms to grow plants in. Without the sun most if not all plants will die and we will lose our oxygen supply.

This is true, and it is possible. If the sun were to go out, MANY if not almost ALL humans would die. The smartest would make for the underground. I see it as people living in individual colonies below the surface makeing and growing what they need to supply their colony. The surface would be rough for a while, but if u think about it it would become a tundra. Wouldnt weather change too? like if theirs no sun to heat the earth that messes up wind patterns...

I'm not just talking about the survival of humans though. I'm talking about plants and animals. All plants would die without the sun due to lack of photosynthesis. Without that and without them we have no oxygen. Without plants herbivores would die. Without them, we and all other predators die. We would stand little to no chance of surviving the sun going out without many years of planning before hand. Even underground. We would need sun rooms large enough to grow enough plants to give us oxygen, while also enough for us to harvest and eat as well as enough to feed our animals. That is a lot of plants by the way....

Sun rooms are needed, i agree with you there. if the sun went out though all the air wouldnt just dissapear though, its still there. if we take many plants down underground into small caverns we'd be ok. Also, fungi dont need light to grow, so that could be a possible food source, and if u wanna go scifi, light, heat, all that other BS

Sticking with light issue right now, I don't think you understand the sheer quantity of plants we'd need. The moment the light from the sun stops plants would begin dying because they wouldn't be able to make their food. And though we'd have air for a while, it would be sapped up quick. Thus why we'd need preparation time far in advance to the sun going out. Also, for plants that grow in darkness, there isn't nearly enough to amount to anything.
Now, I also gotta bring up the point, if the sun goes out, so does our heat. We'd be looking at far wose than an ice age. Try looking at Pluto. We'd have that hit us within hours I'd predict. We might have a little time from the heat already trapped here but the surface would freeze so quickly we'd never be able to make it in time.

If the sun were to go out plants would not just die overnight, they would use up the remaining nutrients before they actually die. If they died the minute the light went out then the plants would be dead every time night fell. And as for heat, the atmosphere acts like insolation and traps some of the heat in. it will dissapate into space, but like the plants dieing theres no way its going to happen overnight.
Should the sun go out we still have power plants for awhile afterwards, and like you said we will go beyond ice age. Thats why i said we need to go deep down into the earth, the layers of rock will act as insolation, and the if u go deeper youll get close to magma wells.

But if u dig so deep that you take magma wells your going to be nowhere near aquifers for water. What will you do when you run out of fresh water?

Well first off just because you get close to lava doesnt mean there ISNT water. Their are super hot pockets of water deep in the earth. We can take from those, dig up into the aquifers, take snow from the surface, and invest in water purification and recycling. If ur really smart youll pick a cave thats close to the sea so you can dig sideways and only have to desalinate your water.
