Got this from another site i go on ignore SG and SGW as these refer to Stargate and Stargate Worlds.
Basic RolePlay Guide
This is what I have put together using a couple of sites and my own know how, but this sites was really helpful. Props to Misty for letting me use the 28th site as a reference.
Rules
These are general rules that appear in most RP.
Character Bio
We ask on here, before any role playing is taken place that you put a carefully written and detailed character bio here.
When RPing remember a few rules:
Character Creation & Decribing
Be careful when describing or otherwise making up something that has not been prevalent in the SG universe. Depending on its use, it can be seen as god modding. Thus sticking with SG (and SGW) canon would be the most wise, and most fun. (Examples include: telekinesis, telepathy, creating a new race or weapon etc.)
Timeline
Like the game, all RP events should be held during seasons 8-9 of Stargate SG1. (In some cases, [Story] threads may be exempt from this.
Controlling other characters than your own
This is frowned upon. As this character is not yours, you are not allowed to control it. The only exeption to this rule, is when the player gives you permission to do so.
Power gaming
A player is power gaming when they make their character stronger than is deemed necessary. People quickly tire of characters that always win. For example:
Lycan races towards the stargate and jumps over the battalion of Jaffa and get outs his P90 and shots them all dead.
God Modding
God modding is essentially the same as power gaming, only it focuses more on defense. A player is god modding when they play that their character never gets hurt or heals too quickly. For example :
Lycan is shot by multiple rounds of staff blasts. He soon drops to the floor in agony. Five minutes later, Lycan gets up and helps Scarlet to attack the compound that they had just lost.
Balance
Just a note here on the balance of powers and strength. Strong or weak, good or evil, there must be a balance. What is the point of having heroes when there is no one around for them to be heroes for? A world cannot be made up entirely of heroes. There must also be a balance between good and evil. Evil characters cannot always escape, heroes cannot always win. That's what makes RPs more interesting.
Location
Know where all the characters are. You can't have a conversation with a guy who just went through the gate.
Knowledge
You as a person may know things that your character does not. Do not just give them the information, let them role play it out (or earn it).
Hurting/Killing
Do not kill or hurt another character unless it is your own, or you get the permission from that character's player. As well as that, always "attempt" to hurt a player rather than just hurting them. For example, instead of:
"Lycan jumped up and shot Lisentia in the head"
You can have:
"Lycan jumped up and aimed his P90 Lisentia's head, he squeezed his trigger and took a shot."
This leaves an option on whether or not Lisentia wants to be hurt. Also be realistic about your own character's health. If your character is hit with a lot of damage or the potential to being hit, don't act as if he/she was barely scratched. As well, don't make your character seem near death if he/she barely got a scratch. Take some hits.
Punctuation and Grammer
In order to avoid confusion for what your character is saying, please use appropriate punctuation. There are basically two different ways to separate action from talking.
The first is the same as what you see in a novel. You put quotes " " around what your character is saying, and no quotes around your actions. This style usually calls for more complete sentences.
The other option is to put asterisks * * around your actions. This style is more for a instant message RP, and thus on forums not commonly seen.
Proper spelling and grammar is to be expected and encouraged. Using internet slang or other various internet incarnations that are nearly indecipherable is looked down upon.
Final Note
It is strongly suggested that you base your character and actions in realistic situations. As well as that, you have to make everything believable. Keep it real and within the boundaries of SGW. This includes backgrounds.
And most of all: Have fun!
