The previous rp: ((Yes, it abruptly cuts off, what happens after will be explained later. I suggest skipping this at first, but you don't have to. ))
Kale remained in the cell he'd been put into. Being un-registered wasn't a good thing in this city any longer. He sat on the bed silently, unsure of what was to come his way or what was to become of him.
a man in a white coat, wearing a pair of face-obscuring goggles, took a step towards the cell, and raised an eyebrow. "Are you ready to be registered?" He leaned forward. "This isn't just the process of jotting your name down somewhere you know. " Though Kale couldn't see it, the doctors eyes narrowed.
A low growl emitted from his throat as he watched the man silently. He hated being here and would protest the entire way. His midnight black hair was pulled back into a pony-tail.
His eyes narrowed. "This is better for you, you know, then just living on the streets without it. " His mouth grinned a bit, in a sarcastic one, then he straightened and motioned tot he guards. They moved forward, one unlocking the door, the other one lifting up Kale by the arm. His hands were shackled together, and he was lucky they hadn't put a muzzle on him. The other guard grabbed Kales other arm and they 'guided' him behind the doctor. They came into a simple room, where they tied Kale down. The doctor pulled something out of a cabinet. . . . .
Kale moved silently with the guys and sat there, pondering how what move he should do after he got out of the easy to break shackles, he was stronger than these men gave him credit for. His deep amber eyes peering around him.
What the doctor held was. . a metal collar, basically. It was the price of being registered. You worn a collar, or some sort of affixed thing that made it obvious to anyone who knew what to look for that you'd been registered. And registered people weren't trusted by those who weren't registered themselves. And even fellow registered mistrusted.
He turned, preparing to place the collar on Kale. Once attached, nothing- not even the strongest man or most powerful magic- could get it off. Only a code that was known only to whomever programmed it could get it off.
Kale took the chance when the doctor had turned to him and flipped the chair up with a foot and flung it at him, aiming to either knock the doctor aside of bust the chair and make him cringe away. He ran towards one of the guards, planted on his left foot and round-house kicked the guard, his kick was powerful, being part Vampire it was easy for him to put all his strength into a kick or center it somewhere in his body.
"s**t!" The doctor was out cold, having been hit soundly with the chair. One of the guards was staggering, and the other one was reaching for his gun. they moved forward, trying to block the door. There wasn't any windows in this room, but there were elsewhere, and if this damn vampire was allowed to get to one. . . .Or to any door in fact, then they- all three of them- were screwed.
Kale chuckled and he ran straight at the other guard, ramming his shoulder into his chest, hoping to knock him off balance.
the guard, a rather good one, just swerved, using the disrupted balance to attempt to hit Kale back. His eyes narrowed. He had to stop him- had to.
Kale used the guards moment to help him move away from the guard and his dark eyes gazed at him as he stood there, not even out of breath yet.
Crap. s**t. ********. and that was all that crossed the guards mind. The other guard got to his feet, and staggered towards him. The alarm had been set, so other guards were rushing towards them at this moment. Among them would be sheer numbers. . .and some of the 'tamed' registered. Even a vampire would have to have a healthy amount of luck to get away from them.
A shadowy figure glanced up from where they stood. Their gaze was drawn to the high building that was the government outpost in this town. A pair of blue eyes narrowed. If the shadows racing across the windows were any indication. . . .seems the government has run into a speck of trouble
Kale knew that in a few minutes there would a lot more guards on him then these two block heads. He smirked and ran towards the two of them, disappeared and reappeared behind him and he ran down the hallway. His steps barely made any sound, only thing that made any noise was the pendant he wore around his neck, it's chain chinking lightly.
The guards turned, confused a moment, then turned and tried to run after him. They each went opposite ways, but they weren't nearly fast enough. The windows that overlooked the city- the windows that a strange someone was watching avidly- were closer and closer to Kale.
Standing, the figure shook their head lightly, and started walking towards the building in the distance. They were staring at those windows. Someone- they didn't know who- was about to break for it, and this figure hoped they made it.
Kale sensed someone outside of the building, though he couldn’t tell who it was and wasn't about to stop and find out, he broke through one of the windows and fell, farther than he thought, onto the opposite buildings roof. He landed hard and rolled to ease the blow on the rest of his body.
They jumped up, grabbed a conveniently placed bar, and swung onto the rooftops. All near-soundlessly. The figure moved forward, careful to stay in the shadows and out of the moonlit areas. They were going to help this rogue, because they figured they could. The figure smirked.
the guards began to rush, collecting at the window, then a few rushing towards doors. Either way, this vamp was practically home-free.
Kale coughed when he got to his knees, he'd cracked a few ribs on his landing and he sensed someone around him and whipped his head around and before he could focus on the being he blacked out.
A worried look graced the creatures hidden features, and they jumped forward. They got over quickly- but not as soundlessly- to the vampire. Hefting up his weight, the figure restrained from groaning. They were heavy. And so the figure dragged him away. Out of sight of the guards, and out of danger.
Nieve Sighed, and ran a cloth over the mans forehead. His fever had just broken, his ribs were mending, and bandaged, and she was waiting to see if he would wake up. She'd nearly twisted her own ankle lugging him off that roof and to her home. A small shack, nothing fancy, but it was clean, and it was intact. a studio apartment, basically. He was laying on the cot in the back room. She'd been sleeping on a pile of blankets in the living room area of the front room. She'd fed him broth, flavored with rabbit blood. she'd almost used her own, but something told her he might take that as an insult.
Kale gave a soft groan as he stirred and winced a little at the pain in his sides, but he could feel the broken ribs were mending. He slowly opened his brilliant eyes to find himself in a home he didn't recognize.
Nieve turned, and faced him, then raised an eyebrow. "Gotta give you props, not many can get out of a government outpost alive. " She turned, and dipped the cloth in a bowl of cool water. "several of your ribs are broken, and you had a fever. " She glanced over at him. "Not to sound to strange, but you really should have looked out the window for a few more seconds before jumping." She raised an eyebrow. "If you had been any other race, I'd probably have had to treat a bunch of glass wounds, " She handed him the cloth, incase he wanted to put it on something. "I won't ask for your name unless you request mine. "
Kale chuckled, "My body heals itself so I thank you for bringing me away from the building." He took the cloth gently from her hand, careful not to touch her, in case it bothered her. Some were truly bothered when touched by a Vampire. He moved the cloth to the back of his neck and laid back where he was, "Kale." He told her.
She glanced over. "I assume that your saying your name and not asking for that plant. " She rolled her eyes. "Nieve. " She stood up, and shrugged. "I don’t like the government all that much. So I helped you, and let you stay here until your body had finished it's work. " She raised an eyebrow. "Just so you know, you don't need to worry about me being bothered by your touch. I did just spend the night helping you with your fever. " She stood up, and walked forward. "I made some broth with rabbit blood, and got you to eat some of it, do you want some more? "
Kale shook his head gently hearing Nieve, "I'm alright for now... thanks."
She nodded, then turned awy. "No problem. " She sighed, and felt the urge to scratch at her ever-present headband. It was hiding the only sign at all that she wasn't human. but a human would never help a vampire, so he had to suspect she was something.
Kale slowly sat up and caught her body tense as she was fighting doing something and he sat there, groaning as he'd gotten light-headed from sitting too quickly and cradled his head in his hands quietly.
She stopped, turned around, and gently touched his shoulder. "Are you alright?" She looked confused a moment. Normally she's offer water to someone light-headed, but he was a vampire. Did he need water? She stood up, and watched him a moment. "Do you need me to get you something?" She was, admittedly, unaware about how to help a vampire, other then give them blood. Heck, she' hadn't even known a vampire could get a fever until he did.
"Give me anything that'll have sugar in it." He told her and looked at her with calm eyes.
She felt a smile bubble up, and restrained it. "Alright. " She straightened, walking out, leaving the door open. She stood in the kitchen, pretty much in view of the back room, and cut a piece of something out of a tin, then brought it back to him. "It's a brownie. " she glanced down at the sticky, crumbling mass in her hands, and handed it to him looking sheepish. "Barely. But it does have lots of sugar. " She straightened, and leaned against the wall.
Kale gave her a small grin and nodded, "Thank you..." He ate the brownie, being careful to not drop a single crumb onto the carpet.
She raised an eyebrow. She'd never been able to eat that cleanly. She straightened, watching him. "Do you want some more?" She asked, a tad worried. she'd decided to help him- purely on impulse- and as such, she was going to help him until he could go back to doing whatever it was he did. She leaned against a wall, her short hair brushing over her shoulder. The hairdo was a rather strange one now-a-days, but she liked it.
Kale shook his head as he finished off the brownie, "No thank you... that should hold me over sugar wise for now." He gazed at her, she was pretty and held a certain charm to her that captivated him, but he was careful not to stare at her, sure she'd be un-nerved by the action.
She tilted her head, then shrugged. "Alright. " She wandered off, and came back with the tin, eating a brownie out of it, holding it over the tin so the crumbs fell in that, rather then on the carpet. She sat down, leaning against the wall. "Well, Kale, " she took another bite. " You're welcome to stay here until you're better, so long as you stay out of that closet. " She hooked her thumb at the closet across the room from her, to his left. "If you'd rather not, I can help you get to whatever place you'd prefer. "
“If it's not too imposing, here would be great and I'll obey that rule." Kale smiled softly, curious as to what could be in the closet, but he'd stay out of it.
She nodded, scrambled to her feet, and set the dish down in the sink, before coming back. "oh, and don't worry about imposing. If you being here starts to bother me, I'll tell you, and we can figure somethin' else out for ya,. " she grinned a bit, but at that moment, a loud THUNK sounded. Her entire demeanor- which had been relaxed, friendly- changed. She suddenly was serious, business-like, and slightly stiff. She rushed away from the room, to the small window in the kitchen. a letter hung from a black ribbon there. She grabbed it, turned and walked back towards the room as she skimmed it. "I've. . .gotta go do something. Stay here, and don't get up to quickly. She turned around, tucking the letter into the envelope (sp?) and tucking that into the sash around her wait. She walked to the linen closet, within view of the room, but not the closet she had referred to earlier, and yanked it open. The top three shelves had linens like they should, but the bottom section- which should have been 6 shelf’s, had only one left, near the bottom. Underneath it were boots. hanging on the wall between the shelves were weapons. She picked out one of the pairs of boots, shoved them on, then began tucking weapons into various places. most of them hidden. She talked the whole time. "If something happens, and you need a weapon other then whatever being a vampire grants you, here- " she tossed him a shotgun. " the broth i made you earlier is on the stove, and the straight rabbit blood is in the fridge if you'd prefer that. I should be back by the time it's midnight. If I'm not, keep that shotgun with you. You'll need it. " She turned about to walk off, but stopped, turned and leaned towards him. "If a red head half-breed," she said the word without menace, merely stating a fact, "shows up, tell him 'Nieve's on Ice'. He shouldn't hurt you after that. Or try to anyway. " A wry smile graced her lips.
Kale nodded watching her and smiled at her, "Be careful." He told her, meaning his words.
She gaped at him a bit, plainly surprised, then turned away, towards the front room. "I should be fine. I don't kill people, just deliver messages. Messages some people would prefer unread. " She shrugged, saluted him, and said. "If anyone other then the red-head I talked about comes in here, don't hesitate to hurt them. " she turned, and strode out of there.
Kale nodded to Nieve, "Alright... just keep one eye open at all times though, don't need to come and save you, even though I'm well in debt for you saving my hide." He chuckled as he sat back on the bed, leaning against the wall and nodded, "They need to be delivered one way or another." He said before she left and he gave a soft sigh when he door was closed.
A few hours later . . .
He slipped into the house through the window in the kitchen. He grinned a bit at he sight of the brownie tray, but got a confused look when he saw the pot of broth. He slipped back towards the back room, wondering if she's be awake or not. . .
Opening the door, he saw a figure lying on the cot, and knew it wasn't Nieve. He whipped out a gun, aware that the light- which was on, strangely enough- was shining right on his head of red hair.
"Who the hell are you?" He ground out.
Kale looked at the guy with the gun and put his hands up, showing he had nothing in them, "Nieve's on ice." He said gazing into his eyes and noticed his red hair.
“s**t. " He muttered, sitting down. "Which translates to mean she'll beat he crap outta me if I so much at throw a pillow at you. " He glanced over. "Now, I still wanna know who you are and why your here. " His eyes narrowed, and he shook his head. "Nieves an idiot. I can't believe she let a vamp into her home. " He glanced over at him. "I assume that broth gunk is for you?"
Kale smirked listening to him and put his hands back behind his head calmly. He nodded, "Yeah...." He said calmly. "My name is Kale."
He put his gun away, and leaned against he wall, unaware of the fact that it was the same place and same way Nieve had done before. "Names Zeke, and nice to know who you are, but why are you here?" He raised an eyebrow. "Cause Nieve isn't an idiot, nor is she reckless. " He glanced over at him. "Which also means she gave you a weapon before she left. Which means that empty handed thing you did earlier was a load of bull. " Zeke smirked to. This was acting friendly for him.
Kale nodded to Zeke, "She showed me where they were if I needed them." He told him and gazed at him from where he was laying on the cot, the poor thing barely visible beneath him. "She saved me."
Zeke groaned. "Crap crap crap. " He shook his head, and glanced over. "Let me guess, the government? That's the only reason she'd ever save someone. unless they were a kid. " He shook his head, standing up. "Also the only reason she would give up her bed. " He leaned against the wall, again, eerily similar to the way Nieve did. " Well, I'm a friend of Nieves, and like it or not, you are now to. " He rolled his eyes, smiling. "She certainly does that to people. " He glanced back down at him. "If she showed you where the weapons are, she probably told you what she does?" Zeke glanced towards that other closet, the forbidden one, and sighed. It was obvious from his stance that he didn't know what was in there either, and it was slowly killing him.
Kale nodded, he slowly lifted himself up to his feet, "She did.... she didn't tell me what was in there though." He said and moved towards Zeke.
"Course not. Hasn't even told me, and I'm the one who raised the girl. " He grinned a bit. "Well, kinda. she was 11 when I met her." He noticed Kale standing, and raised an eyebrow. "Don't get yourself hurt, or Nieve'll blame me. In fact-" Zeke got to his feet when he heard a loud crashing sound all of a sudden. His gun was out, and he rushed out of sight. Then, of course, this sounded out from him. "Aww s**t!"
Nieve sat weakly on a chair by a table near the kitchen, clutching at her arm. a large gash was at the top of it, above her gloves. It was bleeding rather excessively. She smiled weakly at Zeke. "Ello Zeke, I su-suppose you've met our . . .our guest?" She was getting weak from blood loss, having trailed it over from across the city.
Zeke rushed to the kitchen, going through drawers until he found some gauze and clothes, then set to stopping the blood. "What happened, Nieve?”
Kale moved with Zeke and moved to Nieve instantly, while Zeke was looking through the drawers, he checked her for where the source of the injury was, when he found it he pressed his hands to it and muttered. Using his powers he was healing her.
Her eyes widened for a split second, then she scrambled away from him, holding her still bleeding, but a lot smaller wound. "Stop that!" Her eyes were wide and her face was flushed.
Zeke glanced over at her, then at Kale, before moving forward and bandaging the wound.
Nieve glanced at her feet, looking guilty and sad. "I'm sorry Kale. I didn't meant o shout I just. .. I don't. . " she glanced away, and zeke finished for her.
"Nieve doesn't like magic very much. " He straightened. And glanced over at Kale. "Don't ask me why. "
"thank you though. " Nieve whispered. "It was a nice thing to do, and normally I wouldn't have reacted like that but. . ." She got an angry look on her face. "But the only reason I have this damn wound is cause I didn’t-" she brook off, as if remembering who's company she was in, glanced at zeke, then glanced away. "didn't what Nieve. " "Well . .the man who I delivered this message to tried to grope me. " she muttered.
Kale stood fluidly, "It's quite alright." He stood there and watched Zeke and Nieve quietly, listening to them and when he heard about the groping his eyes darkened a fraction.
Nieve noticed this, and raised her chin. "Oh calm down. I did what any female would have in that situation. I kneed him. " She shrugged, wincing a little at the movement of her arm. "He- and his guards- didn't take kindly to that. considering there was 6 of them-" Zeke interrupted her to add. "Which really means there were 8 or 10." "There were 6 of them, " she repeated, "I'm lucky all I got was this little scratch. “ ”That 'little scratch' is a gash Nieve. " "So?" Zeke groaned, plopped into a chair, and shook his head.
Kale listened to the two and gave a soft chuckle watching Zeke quietly and he sat back down on the cot quietly. "Anything I can do Nieve?" He asked her, his voice was calm and soothing.
Nieve shook her head, her hair swinging around. Her eyes narrowed at it and she glared at her own hair. Then she gave up on it. "No, Kale, but thank you. " she stood up a bit. "And thank you, Zeke, for A) not attempting to kill Kale- after all, neither of you are wounded in any way- and B) bandaging my wound. " She got a cup of water, filled it up, and chugged it. Before pouring another one- from tap- and drinking it slow. She sat down and leaned against a wall, and Zeke stood up.
He sent a look at Kale saying he better not get her hurt in anyway, then nodded to Nieve. "I need to leave now Nieve. "
“I'll be alright, you flustered mother hen. " She grinned at him and sent hima little wave.
Zeke shook his head and exited, as usual, out a window.
Kale grinned at the two's bantering and sat where he was watching Zeke leave, once he knew the boy was out of earshot he spoke. "He's interesting."
She nodded, smiling a bit. "Always wanted kids, but he's not exactly very sociable. So when he found me, he took me in right away. " She shrugged. "he's like a second set of parents to me. A third, if you count my real ones. But I've never met them. " She winced a bit, plainly not having meant to say that. "Anyway, Zeke's a good friend of mine. Before I told you, he was the only one who knew about what I do. I don't go under the name Nieve for that, of course. I'm not that Naive. " She sighed, and muttered. "And until this very moment, I didn't realize how close to my name that word really is. "
Kale gave a slow nod of his head and smiled softly. He listened intently to her. He looked her face over in a slow, lazy sweep of his eyes.
She was exhausted. She'd stayed up the night before helping Kale, and then she had to do her job this night. . . .She swiped absent-mindedly at her eyes, taking another gulp of her water. She set it down, glancing at her slightly-bloodstained bandage. She sighed a bit. "I'm still really sorry for how I reacted. you were just trying to help me. . ." Never once did it cross her mind that that might confuse him, out of context.
Kale gave a soft smile, "It's okay, I should have asked if you wanted help... it was instinct to help..." He said and was glad his back was to her to hide the blush across his cheeks.
“Mm." she murmured, no real word, but possibility an agreement, rubbing her eyes. "I guess it might be. " She leaned back a bit, relaxing against the wall. "After all .. I helped you. " he yawned a bit, unaware of sliding down the wall until she was laying on the ground, curled up a little bit. She yawned again, her eyes closing,, and murmured. "so. . it makes sense. . " She fell asleep then, laying on her side- the wounded side up, thankfully- and leaning against the wall.
Kale walked into the room where Nieve was and gazed at her, he smiled softly. He tenderly picked her up bridal style, not even jarring her and laid her down in the cot so she could sleep. He moved from her and sat in the windowsill, leaning against the wall as he sat, one leg pulled up to him and the other supporting him from the floor and he watched the moon.
Kale sat quietly on the windowsill and he looked over to Nieve and watched her sleep well into the morning, before he knew it, he was asleep, leaning against the wall, his head tipped down so his chin was against his chest.
The next morning, Nieve felt light on her eyes, and shifted, rolling to escape it. Doing so had her lay directly on her wound, and she woke up letting out an animalistic keening noise of pain. She rolled back over, clamping a hand onto the wound, and squeezing her eyes shut. It hurt, and hurt more because as she slept she'd forgotten she had it.
Kale's eyes fluttered opened as he heard the noise Nieve had made and saw her, he moved from the windowsill, cramped slightly from the small space and he knelt beside her, "Sleep on it?"
She nodded miserably, opening her eyes at looking up at him. "It's worse then getting it, or seeing the blood. 'Cause when I sleep, I forget I have it, then get woken up by it,. " It was then that she realized she was on the cot, and sat right up. she narrowly avoided hitting her head on Kales, not that she noticed. she glanced down, then glanced at him. "Why am I on the cot?" Her eyes narrowed. "Where did you sleep?"
Kale just dodged her sudden upsitting and smiled, "Window."
She rolled her eyes heavenward and just shook her head. "Well, now I feel like a wonderful hostess. " She got up, a bit stiff from last nights work, but perfectly fine. She glanced at him raised an eyebrow, and shrugged. "Oh well. " She yawned a bit, and wandered off towards the kitchen. "I wonder what cereals I have. . " she mused, opening a cupboard then- after taking off the boots she'd accidentally slept it- climbed up onto the counter in or to be able to reach any of the shelves. She was a short little buggar.
Kale followed her quietly, it'd been a long time since he'd had cereal.
She stared a the options, rubbing at her eyes. She pulled out a box of coco pebbles, and glanced at him. "Uhh. . .do you want something?" she asked, motioning to the cupboard. She was unsure what to do. "I've got fruit loops, uhhm, some apple jacks. I think Zeke hid a box of honey bunches of oats in here somewhere. " She slid off the counter, then glanced at him. She didn't know what vampires ate- if anything. after all, Zeke at food, but he was part human. . .
Kale grinned, "Any Fruite Pebbles in there?" He asked as it was his favorite.
She glanced up, thinking about it. "there might be. " She stood on the counter again, shuffling through the cupboards. "A-ha!" She pulled back, grinning widely. "yup! Here. " she set the box down by him, walked around on the counter to another cupboard, and opened it, pulling out two bowls. She hops right off the counter again, walked to the fridge, and pulled out some milk. "Ta-da!" She chuckled a bit, and set out to making her chocolaty cereal. "yum. Nothings better then chocolaty sugary food. "
Kale smiled watching her and wasn't worried about her getting hurt, it appeared she'd donet his several times before.
"hanks, by the way, for not freaking out about my walking all over the counters. " She took the bowl, with milk in it now, to the table, snagging a spoon as she left. She sat down and shoved a bite of the cereal into her mouth. After she chewed and swallowed, she added. "Zeke's always worried I’ll slip or something. " She rolled her eyes, grinned over her shoulder at him. "He'll let me travel all over the city by rooftop, but not walk on my own kitchen counters. "
Kale chuckled as he ate and hoisted himself up easily, the movement fluid and simple with his strong muscles, "I don't panic over too much." He flicked his intense dark eyes up to hers.
She glanced up at him, loosing her train of thought a moment, looking at his eyes. She shrugged, and glanced at her cereal, almost finished. "True. You don't seem like the kind of person who would. " She shrugged. "Then again, neither does Zeke. guess I must be special." She chuckled. "In that I can freak him out. "
Kale grinned hearing her and nodded, "We all have our talents." He said sitting calmly on the counter, eating his cereal calmly.
She smiled back, standing up and rinsing out her bowl. She put it away, before turning back to him, leaning against a counter. She sighed a bit, rubbing her arm a bit, below the wound.
Kale watched her as he too rinsed the bowl he'd been eating out of. "It still bothering you or is that an absent-minded action?' He asked calmly nodding towards her wound.
"Huh?" she glanced down at her arm, and flushed when she realized what she was doing. "Oh. . uh, it's neither. " She made her arm drop, moving towards a bookshelf sitting in the living room. It was a modest one, but it seemed to be holding twice the amounts of books it should be.
Kale her a soft smile and followed her, not really knowing what else that he could do in her home. He gazed at the bookshelf and moved to it to read the titles, seeing how many he'd read through his years of living, or being undead would be the technical term of his state of being.
She noticed his interest, and chuckled a bit. "I wonder how many of these you might have read. Most are fairy tales. Children stories. I think there's a few romance novels in here to. " She squinted a bit, then went down a shelf. "I'm utterly fascinated with Reading, especially myths and children stories. Make-believe. " She smiled lightly. "I have a few normal adult books in here to though. "
Kale smiled and frowned lightly as he pulled out a thinner novel and ran his fingers over the cover, "My mother would read this one too me.... before everyone believed that the Preshions were a cruel evil race... she always told me the story of King Kale, which is where I got my name, and Rosette..." He got a slightly dreamy look to him, he was a hopeless romantic.
She lurched up, about to snatch the book, but purposely calmed herself down. "Yeah. " She glanced away, before smiling lightly at him. "That's cool. " She glanced at her feet. "The woman who raised me used to read us stories, but I didn't understand many of them. And by the time I was old enough to go to school, I was on my own. " she shrugged, running her hands over the books. "I taught myself how to read using that book. " she glanced at the one he was holding. "In the years between when the family who took care of m were killed and when I met Zeke. " She had a feeling she didn't need to add that that made that book her most prized possession. She glanced down. She felt kind of bad, hiding her Race from him. Which made no sense, since she hid it from everyone.
Kale knew she was hiding something the was she was acting was too secretive all of a sudden, but he made no action that showed he knew, he gently put the book back.
She pulled the book back out, flipping through the pages. "It's actually more of a told legend. This is really the only printed version out there, with the storyteller using some of the more widely-believed facts of the story. " She got a confused look, flipping to the back page. "Like that Rosette worked on a farm. " She shook her head. "I believe the one about her being a maid at an inn more. " She straightened, gently placing the book back. She had actually studied that legend, studied it greatly. "I also believe in that Breeze had a man back in the air place, which was excluded. " She rolled her eyes a bit.
Kale nodded, "Agreed... and the version of Kale saving her is much more believable than him terrorizing the little town and she saved him from his animal sides." He let out a little growl.
she raised an eyebrow, then chuckled a bit. "I haven't heard that version. " she hooked a thumb at he book. "And lord knows it's not in there. " she shrugged. "It is more believable though. I mean, Rosettes considered mild-mannered and soft-spoken in every one of the many many versions of this legend. The likelihood of her standing up to Kale in something like that is just slim. At least not until after eh meets him." She gave a slight smile. "I particularly like she story because the whole time, people were expecting her to die, then four friends pop outta the woodwork and she's fine. " She chuckled a bit. "I think that part of the reason those four friends helped so much, is that they were each high up in their tribe. Because Waterlily was essentially running the water tribe, Thorns father was chief, and she was that cli- word, breeze I've always believed was related to someone important, and ash’s clan was probably one of the higher ones in the fire tribe. " she blushed a bit. "But that's just purely what I think. "
Kale gave her a quick, warm smile, "It's a theory that works the best. It makes the most sense and a lot more sense then I've been hearing lately."
She blushed vividly, and gently touched the spine. "It's not that it really matters. either people don't believe in it, have never heard it, or just don't care any more. " She sighed, leaning against the bookcase. A book from the top feel onto her head. "ow. " she glared at it, picking it up. "Guess it didn't like me saying that about it's friend. " she muttered as she put the book back.
Kale watched her, "Ohh.." He said with a little chuckle and stepped towards her, "Guess it didn't... you okay?"
"I'm used to it. Worse things then books have hit me before. " she rubbed her jaw, remembering a particularly painful punch from a while back. "Thanks though. " she glanced at her books. "I've always adored books, even from before I could read them. And now I'm in the business of being a glorified and highly trained mailperson. " She rolled her eyes. "Guess I shoulda seen that coming. "
Kale gave a soft chuckle and he saw a flicker of light across one of the spine's of the books spine's and his eyes moved to it and he cocked his head slightly to read the title, as it was up and down.
She glanced over at him, tilting her head to read the title too.
Kale read it softly, "Preshions: The Culture, Powers and Lives of." He blinked and stood back up and took a step back, not realizing he'd taken it towards Nieve as he'd read. "That's an interesting book to have...."
She stiffened, and glanced away and muttered flippantly. "Yeah, well, I'm a strange person. Besides, I figured I might as well check and see how the legend compared to the facts. " she was staring at a fixed point on the ground, unaware that she was looking to the left, a sure sign of lying. She had that book because it was the only way she'd be able to learn anything about herself. About her race.
Kale knew instantly, that one movement gave it all away. She gently turned her eyes back to his calm, one warms, "I'm not going to say a word." He assured her and gave her cheek a feather soft kiss.
She stiffened, initially because of what he'd said, then because of the kiss. She took a step back, and glanced up at him. "Wh-what are you talking about?!" she demanded, ashamed and horrified to find her voice crack.
Kale gave her a soft smile, but it faded slightly as another book slipped from the book shelf and it caught it a mere inch from her head and placed it on one of the shelves gently. "Why you're so into Preshions.... you are one." He said softly.
Her eyes widened. "T-that's -" she stopped, sighed, and leaned against the wall. "Yup. " She muttered, under her breath. She reached up, behind her head, and undid the firm knot of her headband. It clinked to the ground, and on her forehead was a gem. It was embedded in her skin, but it was different. Instead of the typical gold, hers was silver. And her gem wasn't clear, cloudy, green, blue, white, red. . .well, none of the normal colors. it wasn't even any of the strange colors from the myth. It was a shade of blue so light that it was nearly white. the shade commonly known as ice blue- a color never before seen on a preshion gem.
Kale easily caught the headband so it wouldn't hit the floor and gazed at her and gave her a tender smile, "Zeke know?"
“Yes. I couldn't hide it from him. " she straightened, glanced at him, and said, quite simply. "A character was left out of the legend in many versions. A ,little half-breed vampire that Rosette knew, and later took care of with Kales help. His name, was Zeke. And his great-grandson, is the Zeke we know. " She glanced away. There was something else, those devices on her wrists, but she couldn't show them to him. She’d suddenly lose all his trust. She knew it.
Kale nodded and he watched her and he suddenly ached to pull her into his arms and hug her, but he wasn't sure how she'd react to such an action from him so he stayed where he was and nodded, listening intently to her.
she glanced over at him, and then glanced away, plainly not sure what to do. She rubbed at her wrists, then decided she might as well tell him now. First off though, she needed to explain. "I never knew my parents. all I really know is that my father disappeared shortly after I was conceived, and my mother managed to evade everyone for the longest time. a month before I was due, though, she was captured. and when I was born, they gave her two options. " she closed her eyes, plainly torn. "either watch me die, or register me. " She undid her gloves and pulled them off, showing the slim metal circlets on her wrists. "you can see what she chose. "
Kale watched her quietly and when he saw the little circlets he gently put his hands over her wrists, his grasp very gentle and he caressed the underside of her arms with his thumbs. She raise shocked eyes to his, plainly surprised. Her mouth was gaping open, and she hut it with a snap, blushing brightly. Then she smiled lightly.
He gave her a soft smile and let her arms go gently, "It explains how you knew how to get away from that building so well..."
She tilted her head. "What? Me being registered? " She shook her head, and glanced away. "That was purely my fighting skills. For most of my life, I didn't understand what these things on my wrist meant. " She leaned agains thw all, and murmered. "The government had me raised in a human family- and not a very accepting one. They managed to treat me like their own children, but they didn't exactly like me very much. " She glanced over and hima nd shrugged. "I've never been in that building- or any other- since I was an infant. "
Kale gave a gentle nod and gazed itno her eyes quietly, his calm and warm, even for a Vampire. He breathed in slowly and ran a hand through his hair to push it back from his face a moment, though it merely fell gracefully back into place and he stood there, not really sure what to say.
She slid her gloves back on, and retied her headband. She hestiated, then decided taht she'd tell him about what the mtal disks did exactly, and about what kind of preshion she was, later. She took a step back, trying to come up with a way to dispirse this sudden akwardness. Then she snapped, knowing immedently. "You like reading, right?" She walked intot he kitchen, then dragged a char intot he hallway outside the backroom. She balanced not on the seat, but on the top of the back. She reached up, ran her hands along the cieling, then used her nails to pry openw hat was plainly a door. The panel fell away, the hinges sliding smoothly, and a ladder slid out, going clear tot he ground. She began going up it, stright from the chair. "Come on. But be careful, I'm not sure how much weight the ladder can hold. "
When she got into the attic, she glanced around at her secret loft. It was rather huge, since it went above the entire home. On all the walls were bookshelfs, crammed to full. She had other, thinner bookshelfs hidden behind these ones that held journals, but she wouldn't show him those.
Kale nodded, "I love reading..." He watched her in silent amazement, standing close so if she happened to slip he could catch her. He followed her up the ladder, his steps agile and he looked around in silent amazement, "Wow..." He let out on a soft breath.
She blushed a bit,t henw alked over to an old couch that once had been bright green. It was huge and fluffy. "This couch is much comfier then the cot downstairs. If I'd been able to get you up here when you were hurt, I would of. " She smiled a bit and glanced around. "This wasn't designed to be secret, just a normal attic. But a secret loft is where a key thing for a story always seems to happen. It's where the hero and heroine first learn to get along as children. It's where the hero lovingly traces his hands over the pages of the books his late wife prized. It's where the heroines grandmother told her tales as a child that saved her life as an adult. " She was smiling wistfully around the room. once she realized what she was doing though,s he blushed vividly. "I uh. . I have a bit imagination. " She muttered, glancing at her feet. Those hidden journals weren't her life- they were stories she’d written. And each of the things she'd just said had come from those stories. She walked over to an even older and more worn wooden rocking chair with thin cushions draped over it. She sat down, tucking her legs underneath herself. "Zeke's never come up here. He knows about it, but he doesn't really care about books. " She waved a hand towards the bookshelves. "you're welcome to read the books in here. "
Kale gave her a soft smile, it meant a lot that she'd welcome him this far into her home.
She flushed a bit, and glanced at her lap. She wished he would do something other then just stand there and smile. say thanks, even. She was getting more and more embarrassed. She then glanced back up at him and smiled lightly. At least he didn't ridicule her for her strange thoughts on the secret loft thing.
Kale moved towards one of the bookshelves as he realized that he was making her nervous and flushed, "Sorry..." He told her softly.
She got a confused look, and tilted her head slightly to the left. "For what?" She put one foot on the ground and began gently moving the rocking chair.
Kale gave his head a small shake, "Nevermind..." He said calmly as he looked over the titles.
She stood up, and glanced at the titles with him. Most of them were fairy tales or myths. Children books. She grinned a bit and pulled one out. "I'm currently reading this one. " She flipped through a few pages. "It's a more gruesome version of 'Cinderella'. "
Kale watched her and grinned, "Mind if I read it after you're done?" He asked, a grin on his thin lips.
she smiled a bit, and nodded. "Not at all. " She turned to hand it to him. "Feel free to read it now, if you want. I read a couple books at a time. " She shrugged, before glancing over the bookshelf.
He smiled and gently took the book from her hands, letting his fingers brush hers gently as he did so.
She didn't react to the fingers, merely smiled a bit. Then she turned back to the bookshelf, looking for something else to read. "All I really do is read, eat, sleep, and . . .er . .'work'. " She flushed a bit. "And I refuse to work when I'm wounded, no matter how tiny or large the wound is. " She motioned to her arm. "I can only eat and sleep so much, so I end up reading a bunch. " She finally found something. Pulling it out, she wandered over to the couch and sat down on one corner of it, leaning against the arm. She pulled the blanket- a knitted thing, mixed with shades of blues- and drapped it across her lap. She motioned to the other seats on the couch, th en to the rocking chair. And smiled lightly at him.
Kale gave her a soft smile and he normally would have gone and sat by himself in the rocking chair, but for some reason, something deep down inside of him told him to sit by her on the couch, so he did.
She glanced at the rocking chair, then down at her book, flipping through a few pages for the one she needed. As she did so, she managed tot alk to him. "Are you feeling better?" She glanced at him, then back at the book. Some might think she was being rude. She was just trying to multitask. Some might think she wanted him out of there quickly, hence the reference to his health. she just honestly was concerned.
Kale gave her a soft smile and nodded, "I do feel much better and I deeply thank you for helping me." His deep eyes swirled with his emotions and showed he meant his words, he then leaned back into the couch and flipped the book open, gently turning past a title and few other pages of the book before he got to the start.
She flushed a bit at how he worded that, and merely glanced down at her page, reading now.
Several hours later, a light thump was heard. Nieve had long since fallen asleep, wrapped up in that knitted blanket, but her book had just slid tot he floor, landing face down.
Kale moved and caught the book before it could make further noise and he sat it on the cushion between them gently and gazed at her.
Zeke tried to be quiet, he honestly did. That was until he noticed the damn ladder. He sighed, and glared up it from the floor. "Please tell me you both aren't up there. " Resigned, he climbed up the ladder, worried the whole time that it'd break under his weight, then opened his mouth to make some retort about it- when he saw she was asleep. For a split second, everything about him softened, and anyone watching could easily tell he did, honest-to-god, consider this girl his daughter. then he was back to being the tough mixed-breed, and plopped down on the floor. The firs thting out of his mouth was, "She treasures that blanket. " Zeke shifted, to gingerly sit in the chair. "She's softhearted, you know. It shows in how she saved you. And in how she helps others. " His eyes saddened. "Once, when she wa 18, and her . .. er. . . messenger business had just reached it's peak, she met a little old lady living in a shamble of a shack for a house. She spent a month, nearly two, fixing that house up for that old lady all on her own. And while she's a good fighter, she isn't all that strong. " His eyes go really sad now. "That lady made her the blanket while she was fixing her house, though Nieve didn't know until she was finished. The lady lived for only a week after Nieve fixed her house. " He glanced down at the rocking chair he was in. "This was that little old ladies. "
Kale listened intently to Zeke and nodded when he was finished and looked back to Nieve, "She is a sweet, kindhearted being." He whispered, though knew Zeke could hear him easily and he flicked his deep brown eyes from Nieve to him and smiled, "I am thankful she saved me."
Zeke watched him a minute, then glanced back at Nieve. He stood up, gently tucking the covers closer around her. It was plain, as always, that Zeke cared for Nieve, as much as one might. He glanced up at Kale, then turned to walk away, as he went downt he ladder, he said, "You're almost better, and when you are, you won't have an excuse to be here. " He landed softly on the ground, and after that, said so Kale could hear him, "so take good care of her while you are. " Then he walked out, and left.
It was about thirty, twenty minutes later when Niece woke up. Almost. She sat up, and glanced around. Her midnight blue eyes foggy and cloudy with sleep. She glanced at Kale, her expression that of a sleepy person who'd awoken when they should, or could, but really wasn't awake yet.
Kale gazed to Nieve when she awoke and gave her a soft smile. "Morning." He said softly and didn't move to touch her, unsure of how she'd react after just waking up, knowing how violent some people became.
She glanced at him, eyes still bleary, then just leaned forward, laying down. Her head resting on his lap, and after snuggling in a bit- the way one automatically does when about to sleep- fell right back asleep, still curled up in the blanket. She was plainly lazy, and liked sleeping. She's also be horribly embarrassed if she woke up.
Kale gave a soft smile and rested his hand tenderly on the back of Nieve's head and caressed a moment. He watched her doze back off and stayed still for her, though having her head in his lap stirred ideas deep in his mind. Ideas which he had kept dormant for so long and he wasn't about to act on them.
She slept like that for another few minutes, maybe ten, before sitting up, rubbing her eyes, then sliding her feet onto the ground. She looked confused for a minute, then the confusion cleared, and she gave him a slight smile. "Morning. " She stood up, stretching a bit, before placing the blanket back over the back of the couch. "Come on, let's go downstairs and get some food. " Food seemed to often be on her mind. She slid down the ladder, not bothering with the rungs.
Kale gave her a soft smile and nodded, "Sounds good to me." He said and followed her, jumping lightly onto the floor, at least for how big he was he landed very softly. He straightened and grinned to her and then proceeded to follow her into the kitchen.
Nieve rubbed at her eyes a bit- she wasn't very good at waking up- and climbed onto the counter again. She opened a cupboard and then shut it. "I think I'm actually going to cook. " She muttered to herself, jumping off the counter. She winced when she landed of course, because without shoes to absorb the shock, that could hurt, but brushed it off. Then she opened the fridge and pulled out some eggs and cheese. "Do you like cheesy eggs?" She asked, turning to face him, remembering she should probably ask.
Kale watched her calmly as she jumped onto and off the counter, he knew she'd be fine, but couldn't help at least watching her do so. He nodded to her, "Of course." He knew the food would one satisfy him in the short-run, but it would be rude to deny the food she was offering.
She tilted her head, a bit confused, but shrugged. She pulled out a pan, set it on the stove, some butter, a bowl, a picked out four eggs.
She cracked the eggs into the bowl and whisked it, then after buttering the pan- she detested using oils- she poured the soon-to-be-scrambled eggs into the pan, put some cheese in it, and began to cook.
Her hair was a mess, tangled in and around her headband, but she didn't seem to notice. When she focused on something, everything else could just fade away. Then again, she could also easily make that 'something' be 'everything else'. It's why she was so good at her job. Thinking of her job made her think of Zeke, which reminded her that vampires needed blood. She didn't glance away fromt he food- if she did that she'd burn it or herself. "Kale, if you need blood, Zeke has some stashed in the fridge. "
Kale gave her a soft smile as he watched her move as she cooked. When spoken to he perked up and nodded to her, "I will take some after I eat." He told her honestly and smiled. Watching her was very comforting.
She jumped- considering who she was and what she did that was an amazment- and glanced up at him. "Huh?" She asked, honestly confused. She didn't know what he was talking about.
Kale gave her a soft smile, "Leave... I don't have to if you'd really like me around."

Kale Anthony Higgins Kale sat silently on the park bench. The cool breeze was blowing his long, dark hair, which had been pulled back into a ponytail as he watched the children playing on the playground. He felt relaxed here and was calmed by watching all of the children. He could think while he sat there. His dark eyes were distant as he gazed at the kids, but saw nothing. His mind was back on the one girl whom he had found himself falling for and she had even saved his life. She'd pulled him from the government that had trapped him and held him captive to get him registered because he wasn’t human. A vampire really wasn't seen as a good base of morals or a decent being to be let out in the society because he didn't fit the mold. Nieve had saved his life though and she'd gotten him from her home that night so many years ago to save him from being recaptured and because of it, he'd been wondering from town to town and had returned to where everything had started. He had tried to stay away. Something just kept pulling at his heart and soul, telling him that he should come back to where he'd fist met Nieve, knowing it was the place that he should have been, no being a wonderer.
Kale's eyes slowly focused back upon the kids, he watched his daughter quietly. His dark eyes kept locked on the girl. She was strong, being part vampire and preshion, she was a powerful little being, but Kale's paternal instincts had kicked in when he'd saved Kara. He'd found the girl in a small town that he'd gone through and decided that it was best for him to save the girl. He hadn't figured out what had brought him to save the little girl, but he had done so and saved her from a life of living up to someone else's expectations and living under someone else's rules and be forced to live a life that wasn't truly hers in the end. He wanted Kara to live like he had, grow up and become a woman of her own choices and figure out her own consequences and make her own mistakes, with Kale to guide her as she grew. Having Kara come to Kale for advice was something that Kale hadn’t thought to make a big impact upon him, but it really did, made him step back and really look at how far he’d come since Nieve had saved his life.

Zeke stood there, watching him. Zeke turned away, still out of sight. Nieve. . .she'd vanished on that day. He'd come back to see her, maybe see if Kale was still there- and found a pile of ashes in place of her home. He'd raised Nieve- much as Kale was raising Kara now. Zeke wanted to know where she was, he wanted to blame Kale, but he couldn't. She'd convinced him to leave before she'd vanished.
Nieve never was good at staying near people, not with her considering herself a ticking time-bomb.
Zeke hesitated, the walked around the park, finally coming upon Kale. He shook his head, and sat down. "She doesn't have a gem, probably from the mixed blood. " He said simply. He glanced over at Kale. "You . . .don't know what happened, do you?" Zekes eyes said it all- that he didn't know either. ((haven't decided just what happened to Nieve yet, but I decided that she wouldn't just pop up out of no where. So, ta-da, I used Zeke ))

Kale watched Zeke quietly and he sat where he was, unmoving, "I would like to know..." He said honestly and gazed quietly at him. The first time in awhile that he'd taken his eyes off of Kara.

"I don't either, you know. Just. . .came back to ashes. " His eyes saddened. "I imagine a good deal of those were her books. " He glanced over at Kale, then over at the girl. "She's half preshion. " He murmured, almost amazed. He glanced over at Kale. "You're taking care of her, right?" Zeke smiled bittersweetly. "Kind of like me. " He shrugged a bit, and moved to stand up. "Nieve. . . I bet whereever she is she misses us. " He hesitated, then glanced over at him. "Do you think she died?" His voice was sad and. . .almost hurt. He didn't want to think that.

Kale gazed at Zeke, "I don't think she has... knowing her she's probably off fighting her life or for someone that she loves." He said and looked to Kara, making sure she was alright and then back to Zeke, "We really don't have somewhere to stay."

Zekes eyes saddened. "She would be trying to come back. She's either captured or. . ." He shook his head, and glanced over at them. He sighed a bit, and nodded his head. "I've got a place. It doesn't have a spare room, so you'll have to sleep on the floor, but it's got a roof. " He leaned back, glancing at the sky. He only was offering because. . .because Nieve would want him to. She cared for Kale, he'd seen it. And she cared for children. And he could see her reaction to hearing he'd failed to offer a preshion a home. Zekes eyes misted up, but he managed to push past it, and turn to Kale and raise an eyebrow. "First we should make sure the little one trusts me, at least a little. " Zeke glanced over at the little girl.

Kale gazed over to Kara and nodded, "Might be a wise thing to check on..." He said and called to his daughter. Kara herad her farther's holler and her deep violey eyes peered over at him and she quickly moved to him. She wasn't one to disobey and go against his word, mainly cause of the frigt of being punished. It was enough for her to obey him. She looked at the man that was beside her father, a haunting shadow crossed behind her eyes as she looked between the two quietly.

Zeke croutched down to be on level with the girl. "Don't fear me, little one. " He gave a soft smile. "I'm going to help you and your father. He's someone I know. . .through another. " He stuck out a hand slowly. "My name is Zeke, little one, and it's nice to meet you. "

Kara gazed silently into Zeke's eyes and she eyed his hand before she put her smaller one slowly into it, "Kara." She said, her voice was melodic and captivating. A trait of both parts of her being, preshion and vampire. Kale chuckled softly as he watched his daughter and he put one of his hands gently onto her shoulde, to let her know that Zeke was being honest and that he was right there besides her and not about to let something happen to her.
