Wilhelm stared distastefully at the expanse of water before him. The tip of his tail twitched once, twice, three times in agitation. Swimming was not his forte. But the island just looked so nice, so peaceful, so green -- and he swore he heard it calling his name. Maybe the water wasn't all too deep ... if he was lucky, he'd just be able to wade his way across.

A few moments, a soaked coat all the way up to the shoulders, and four muddy paws later, that plan was stricken to the ground. He grumbled audibly as he hoisted himself back up onto the bank of the lake.

Just overhead, a darkly colored Velociraptor beat her wings, letting the wind carry her gracefully over to the island that the Dire had been so eager to reach. Wilhelm watched her sourly. He was familiar with her ("unfortunately," he thought). He just knew she was laughing quietly to herself, perched in some little treetop in the thick of the woods over there, and he definitely knew she had done that just to spite him.

Exactly where Wilhelm had predicted her to be, Merle smirked wordlessly, and preened her feathers.

Xerxes slowly began to approach the center of the reserve. He had grown exhausted of searching the woodland with no fruition to claim his own. What was he searching for? Answers. The questions? That wasn't important to anyone but himself. His eye scanned the area as trekked further to the commotion he heard up ahead.

In the distance he saw another Dire Wolf and a shadow fly overhead. It seems the mixture of species had begun and he would have to play his cards carefully if he wanted to acquire any possible information subtly from these others. Emily, his faithful doll, was perched upon his back, her Cheshire cat grin there as always.

"Oh~? And what do we have here? A wolf who cannot swim?" Xerxes called out, approaching closer to Wilhelm. "You shouldn't be afraid of the water. No monsters have been confirmed - yet."

"Or maybe there has!", Emily chimed in.

Xerxes chuckled at his doll's comment. "Ah, Emily~ You're going to scare the poor boy." He had a feeling others were going to think they were nuts upon hearing a talking doll and think him insane for talking to it so freely - but all of that amused him greatly.

Boris glared at the sunlight. He didn't care to much for the sun, even though he knew that it was a necessity for him to be able to live. It was just so damned bright. So bright in fact, that he preferred to sleep when it happened to be sunny. Like today for example, he was planning to sleep until sunset, but, he sensed some people nearby. And when he sensed people nearby, his body just had to wake up. It annoyed him greatly.

Getting up, he noticed Two dire wolves near by, one with a strange doll atop his back. The look of that doll gave Boris shivers down his spine, something was just wrong with that doll, he just knew it.

He dragged his body near the others, knowing that he wouldn't be able to go back to sleep. At least as long as they were there.

Just before he reached the group though, his body stood still as he heard the doll talk. He knew that the doll was strange but he didn't know that the doll was this strange. Heck, when he was fighting with other Dire wolves they weren't as strange as the doll, and that was saying something.

Hearing the other man talk back to the doll was even more crazy. Boris tried to get himself out of this shock but he couldn't. The two paralyzed him right on the spot. This made Boris just a tad bit afraid of the two. After all, he hadn't had a reaction like this to another dire wolf in such a long while.

Wilhelm cringed as he noticed the cloaked Dire approaching him. Well, this was humiliating. He did his best to shake the water out of his fur before Xerxes got too close.

"Afraid?" He scowled. "What kind of a baseless assumption is that? I just ... like to feel solid ground under my feet, is all. Monsters. pfft ..."

He was about to roll his eyes (very exaggeratedly) when a thought struck him. Wasn't there a female voice just now? He cut a glance back to Xerxes. Nope, male, except maybe that doll he was carrying. But ... nah.
Noticing another presence nearby, he scanned the unfamiliar wolf up and down and decided he wasn't very female, either.

Wilhelm's look of indignation was now one of confusion. "Who said that?"

Tilting his head to the side to allow himself to get a better look at the new Dire who approached. The sheer look of the mind being boggled made Xerxes chuckle a bit darkly. "Hehe... Oh my, now isn't this something?"

Emily giggled a bit but it was rather unnoticeable since her mouth didn't move as she talked, the grin just remained. If one was paying close enough attention they would see the doll shake a little bit as anyone would when they laughed.

Returning his attention to Wilhelm, Xerxes smiling. "Ah, perhaps it was baseless of me to say that. Although it does seem like you do not like the groundless feeling of water - which would mean you'd be afraid of what would happen the deeper you got out."

Blinking, a smirk appeared on his face. "Who said what? I didn't hear anything~"

"'Said what?' That - that little joke about the 'monsters' - you didn't hear it? It was a girl..."

Wilhelm glanced eagerly at the wolf known as Boris, hoping for backup. He then peered suspiciously at the doll atop Xerxes's back. It seemed to be shaking a bit despite the utter lack of wind. His gaze lingered there for a moment until he shook his head and continued, "Anyway, I just like to be aware of what I'm treading over at all times. That's all."

As soon as the words came out of his mouth, Wilhelm realized that all he'd just done was confirm the other Dire's suspicions. He looked awkwardly down at his paws.

Boris stared at the little doll. He could have sworn that that little doll had said something. But that didn't add up in Boris' mind. Dolls couldn't talk, at least the last time he checked they weren't supposed to. Maybe the doll didn't talk, maybe it was just another animal nearby. Yeah....that must be it.

Then the doll shook, and Boris could sear it wasn't windy today. Maybe the doll was really light? Maybe he didn't get enough sleep, or maybe he was just imagining that little doll laugh? He didn't know, he knew one thing though, and that was that his gut instinct told him that that doll had a mind of his own. He shoved this thought aside, after all, that's was completely illogical in his mind.

Hearing Xerxes comment caught his attention. He looked oddly at the other wolf, assuming that it was the dire wolfs old age that made him not hear that girls voice. After all, only the elderly had white fur...right?

Boris didn't really know about the elderly, he only met a few, and out of those that he have met in the past, were all graying or had this beautiful white in their fur, much like this man had.

"You must be deaf old man,"Boris stated in a a low and gruff voice, but loud enough for the two wolves to hear.

He sidestepped towards the male with the striped tail, his eyes trained on who he dubbed the "old man".

"It's always better to see your enemy than to not see them," Boris said as he quickly glanced at the dire wolf near him with the striped tail, having the same views as him. He tolerated water, it was good for fish, and water but other than that, Boris tended to avoid water whenever he could.

He looked back at the other male and the doll warily, he wasn't about to let that one do something to him while he wasn't looking.

Xerxes blinked his eye a bit then began laughing. "My, my. You're all quite nuts if you ask me." His snickering continues a bit longer until he turned to look at the doll on his back. "This is the only girl I know of here on this section of land at the moment. And she's just a doll..."

He well knew she was more than a doll. She could talk, comment and move her arms freely when she wanted to. She was his best friend and companion in everything as she never left his side unless circumstances required it.

"Hmm... I see. So you both are afraid of the water then. Such a shame. You'll never get to new lands that way." He smirked a bit then frowned. "And you." He looked at Boris. "I am not old."

...That was a lie. He was. He was over a hundred years old however his body wasn't. There was a long story tied to it and he didn't wish to dwell on the thought. It stirred up too many emotions - rage, sorrow, self-pity and hatred.

"You're all so silly.", Emily chimed in. "Thinking a doll could talk." She made sure that Xerxes was looking away from the two other Dire wolf before talking. Oh... this mind game was far too amusing.

Boris didn't like being called a nut, not at all. Especially if the dire wolf that called him a nut was a nut himself. He was infuriated at the old man, luckily he was able to keep the anger inside of himself, instead of getting into a bloody battle with the old man. After all, it wasn't right to fight with your seniors.

Boris glared at Xerxes. trying to emit all of his anger that way. "I think you're the one that's nuts here old man. How do you know that there's not another female roaming around over here? You're the one with a inanimate object on your back that you've given a name and a gender to. Only pups do that."

Boris knew that the old man could probably be holding his grandchilld's or child's toy, but he thought that this dire wolf was way to senile. After all, no one would want to mate with a nut-job, unless they were a nut-job themselves.

"I am not afraid of water, I just tolerate it!" Boris growled. He didn't like people knowing about his weaknesses. If they knew about them then they knew how to defeat him if they ever got into a battle.

"Sure look old to me," Boris grumbled, looking him up and down again to double check. Yup, he sure looked old, so Boris decided that he was either just beginning to age, or he didn't want to admit that he was elderly. Either way, Boris was still going to call him "old man" no matter what he said.

He heard the girls voice again and his body stiffened. He hated that little voice, it was creepy. "Who's that! Come out now or suffer the consequences!" The wolf barked, he was getting fed up with this little girl. One thing was certain, he would make sure that that little girl wished she was never born once he was through with her.

Wilhelm stood listening to this exchange between the other Dires for a moment ('He doesn't look that old ...') until his thoughts started to wander. Maybe he really WAS going bonkers. He shuddered at the idea. The last thing he wanted was to be the scrawny old wolf everyone mocked, sitting off by his lonesome and laughing maniacally all the time. At least he wasn't the only one who heard the child's voice. Was it possible, he wondered, for two different individuals to hear the same voices inside their head? That's a little odd. He'd always thought insanity was some kind of ... isolated thing --

He snapped out of his reverie at the mention of water again. He glanced at Boris, nodding in agreement at the male's statement about being able to see the enemy. "And what if I'm not afraid of swimming, I'm just bad at it?" Somehow that wasn't quite as bad as having a fear of it. Less cowardly.

His ears twitched at the female voice again and he sighed, getting quite frustrated. "You really don't have to hide," he said calmly, trying a different tactic than the one beside him. "We're only making casual conversation!"

"Being bad at something can derive from being afraid of it as well." Xerxes smirked a bit at Wilhelm. "If you ever wish to get somewhere in life, you cannot constantly run in fear. Eventually a situation will rise where that fear can be placed against you... And then. What will you do?"

Slowly he began to approach the water's edge and gazed out to the island in the distance. Studying what was out there he could see a shadowed figure that vaguely, from where he was standing, resembled the night sky. Upon realizing that was the source of this whole predicament he chuckled. "Were you trying to catch yourself a meal, by chance?"

"If he was, he fails!", Emily chirped gleefully.

There was no need for any female to reveal themselves, since she was already revealed. Both Emily and Xerxes wondered for just how long the others would think another larger figured played a role in this game. They originally were on the right track with the doll...

Boris looked at Wilhelm strangely. He didn't think that any dire wolf could be bad at swimming, maybe they could be decent, but not bad. After all, it was only moving your legs about, it wasn't that difficult to do.

Hearing Xerxes comment made him freeze. He was most definitely certain that this old man was a force to be reckoned with. Being old, he knew the ways of battle, ways that Boris didn't even know.

It frightened Boris to know that there was another person out there that had more knowledge and experience than him. He knew that with experience and knowledge came power, not brute force. Even though brute force could help with getting the power, you couldn't have just that, he knew that it took more.

"How could you be bad at it? It's only moving your legs about. Not that hard to do. Old man, you show him since your the one that likes it the most. Teach him a lesson or two, might do him some good." Xerxes seemed to know a lot about water, at least more than he and the other dire knew, therefore it was only right if Xerxes taught the other dire. That and he really didn't want to get into that water when he didn't need anything from it.

Hearing the word meal made Boris' stomach give a slight rumble. He mentally yelled at his stomach for doing such a thing. It wasn't the time or the place to make a noise like that so why now of all times? He swore his stomach hated him sometimes.

Hearing the females voice again made Boris' anger level almost reach to the breaking point. He was tired of the silly game, couldn't she come out already?

He pushed the idea of the doll talking away again. After all, a doll talking is just impossible, that girls voice did sound really close to him though and that just got him bothered. Maybe, just maybe it was a ghost. That couldn't be possible either though, ghosts don't exist.

"Come out little girl! At least tell us where you are so we can go to you. Stop playing this stupid little mind game of yours. It's starting to piss me off." He barked, letting some of that anger out.
PostPosted: Sat Sep 12, 2009 8:58 pm

"Or it can derive from ... not practicing," Wilhelm said to Xerxes quickly, trying desperately to prove himself not the weakling he seemed to be. But this other male was unarguably right. It was the feeling of floating above the unknown, the total vulnerability, that he disliked, so he'd just never cared to develop the skill. Of course, he would never admit this.

He turned to Boris and frowned at his suggestion. "Teach me? Hm. You're one to talk. I don't see you jumping into the water." He quirked a brow wryly at the sound of his stomach. "Too hungry, I guess.

"Not particularly," he said to the other wolf this time (with more-than-slight agitation at that bothersome little girl again). "It just looked so inviting ..."
His eyes followed Xerxes's back to the island and remembered the velociraptor who had previously flown over. "Is she still over there?" he mumbled, thinking out loud. If that girl was just pulling a prank on them, why he'd --

All by herself several feet away, Merle was very much amused. She almost wished she'd spoken up and joined the white-haired Dire in his little trick, but she was afraid of spoiling the fun. It was all she could do to keep herself from flying over to the three Dires and joining the fray, but she was enjoying seeing the males fluster. Still, she couldn't help but wondering the real source of the taunting. Who was that on the male's back ... ?

"Teach him?" Xerxes mimicked. "Hmm... I think that would be quite troublesome, though, I could if he wanted. But! By the sounds of things, he'd be more interested in catching some food." He smirked as he turned to the other Dires and began to approach them.

Emily sat quietly upon her friend's back, staring with that blank lifeless stare at the two she was so happily freaking out. They were quite fun to play with, but eventually the fun would end. Either they'd figure it out or -

"Break!" A voice called out from the shadows, which startled the white haired Dire.

"Na... Who could be bugging me?" Xerxes raised a brow and glared into the distance as the figure revealed himself. "Ah~ So kind of you to show up."

"Don't 'So kind of you to show up' me." the black haired Dire snapped. He had twigs all in his fur and dirt coated upon his jacket. "What exactly is your problem? Why did you just leave like that?!"

Xerxes examined the other male and cracked up laughing. "My my, it certainly did a number on you. But it seems you got away. So let's forget about that."

"Forget about it?! Gah! I don't understand you, clown.", the other Dire growled a bit and glanced at the others. "Don't tell me you plan to send them on a wild goose chase as well."

"Hm...?" Xerxes frowned a bit. "Don't think so lowly of me, Raven~"

Raven, or better known as Gilbert sighed deeply. "...Why do I put up with you?"

"Because you have no choice but to!" Emily laughed.

Gilbert growled and rushed to Xerxes' side, glaring at the doll. "Bite your tongue, Emily! No one asked you."

It seems the secret found its way to the open. Such a shame. Xerxes' and Emily's fun was now over - or maybe it was just beginning.
