We should get some drama in this guild. Someone, get in a fight with someone else. That would be interesting, right?

Okay ...

Here's a notion.

It is entirely theoretical because I FAIL SO HARD at maintaining these things.

But if ... IF ... you were in a post-apocalyptic wasteland along the lines of the Fallout series ...

who would you want to be? how would you live? Would you prefer to be in an intact Vault? An insane survivor from a failed Vault? Someone trying to just survive, scavenging the corpse of civilization? Someone trying to improve the world? Human? Ghoul? Raider?

There was a neat article on one of the official Fallout sites from one of the game's developers; when he playtested Fallout, he would play "as" a character. At the point of character creation, he decided who he was going to be for that play through, and he did some wacky things, which was pretty interesting.

Better, has anyone tried playing the game itself as a character? Or with particular restrictions?

If I went through this fallout world and ended up in a post-apocalyptic situation, I would probably be either one of the poor suckers stuck in the vaults or a struggling wastelander trying to live his own life. Either way, I'm in complete crap - -"

Then again, it may be hard to say... since if I was stuck in the fallout world - I would probably improve my surviving skills drastically. I don't know much about surviving in our world (if I were to get lost in the desert, for example), but if I was put under pressure or in a life/death situation, then SURELY I would learn and become stronger. ninja

To be honest though, I have a feeling that if I was a vault dweller, I'd become one of the mentally ill characters since I'm emotionally unstable. >_< Putting me in a trapped environment + the experiments going on inside the vault would make me trip out. >_<' If I was out of the vault and became a wastelander, I think I would try my best to help others out. I'd stay in a large, trusted group rather than become a lone wolf. I'm uncertain if I would travel or create a home, but I guess it varies depending on the turf right? So I'll just go with whatever works out!

PS - I'm curious about this article you were talking about. Do you happen to have a link? surprised

http://fallout.bethsoft.com/eng/vault/diaries_diary7-10.27.08.html

It might redirect you because the site is dumb and all "select your age/country"

You can find it under the VAULT tab, on the right-side menu, "Character Playthroughs"

Thanks biggrin and wow! I love the thought and detail put into each of these Fallout characters. I think I enjoy Stanley's story and Katie's. Porkchops is... interesting.

I've been percolating this notion in my head.

Does anyone else play Fallout in a "challenge" mode of some sort?

Like, the entire game with just one type of weapon? or just one particular weapon? Or no weapons?

Stanley The Coward's story was interesting because it must be difficult to get through the game without killing anything other than the Obligatory Radroach.

Kind of makes me want to play the game as a Stupid Evil character. Make "INT" and "CHA" the dump stats, and go through the game as a horrible brute. Fail speech checks right and left, hit people who make snide remarks as I walk by ...

Either that or try to play the game in a "What would Brian Boitano do?" mindset. Replacing "Brian Boitano" with possibly other names.

ANYWAYS ...

If I were in a Fallout situation, I think I might actually be a slave. Why? Because that means someone else is in charge of making sure I have food, a place to sleep, and clothing. Someone else is responsible for my well-being. In return, I do whatever. If I could, I'd try to be a "valued" slave. I'd try to get obscure information, develop unusual skills, things that are useful, too useful to risk hurting me. Not like I'm impertinent or anything, y'know?

Otherwise, I think I'd want to go up to the Commonwealth. It sounds like a good repository for scientific and medical know-how, and I'm enough of a geek and enough of a brain that I could probably get in on some of that action. While I'm not so good with mechanics, if I put my mind to it, I can be really good with code. Programming (or reprogramming) robots to say, perform salvage or repair type duties would be an interesting use of my time.

I mean, think of all of those Protectrons and Mr. Handy and Mr. Gutsy robots floating around; only a few can really be used in a way that benefits people. Most of the time you need to just kill 'em. but look at Cerberus in Underworld; for all his "personality" hates Ghouls, his programming impels him to protect them. Why can't folks with Robotics Expert disable Mr. Gutsy robots on the field ... and reprogram them?

Interesting idea. To be honest with you, I thought the last thing someone would choose would to become a slave. You do have quite a few good points though (for survival and whatnot). 3nodding

As for the Fallout challenge, I was thinking of going through a game with only melee weapons, but I haven't done that yet. There's one guy I know of on the Escapist that's going through the whole game with his bare fists O_o I can't seem to find the guy's page (both with literal and visual explanations) but I'll make sure to post the link once I find it xp

Well, I'm thinking about this logically. Given how freaking difficult it is to just SURVIVE in the Wasteland, given the many, many dangers, having someone else who is responsible for you staying alive would be pretty damn useful.

Owning a slave is a sign of financial success; only the wealthiest can afford to keep another human being living. A slave is, in most regards, a total dependent; while they may work for you in some capacity, they cannot procure the bulk of the Essentials for Survival for themselves because of their servitude. A slave is also an investment. Why buy an expensive slave only to have it die? In most cases, it is much more expensive to keep buying replacement slaves than it is to keep one slave living.

I know everyone has these mental images of slaves being peaceful village folk being rounded up and clapped in irons and dragged onto ships to work on plantations. And that's not false. But it's only a tiny portion of the sources of slaves AND the work done by slave labor.

There were plenty of slaves who sold themselves or were sold by family members into slavery. A notable scene in the movie Ever After featured a peasant attached to a penniless noble house who was sold into slavery by the noble responsible for him, for funds to help cover the house's debt. People would indenture themselves as well--a form of contractual slavery defined by a promised term of service--or indenture others in their care.

I'm sure that in the Fallout universe, a goodly portion of slaves are those of an "adult naughty time" nature, but even those are not generally abused (much). Only the most sickeningly rich of people can afford to physically abuse bedroom slaves to the point of long-term disability or death, and those sorts of people are distressingly rare in the Wastes; did you see any abused folks in Tenpenny tower? I'm betting some of those "residents" were, in fact, "property," but only a lunatic would run away from a secure location where they were provided with food and clothing in exchange for some, yes, possibly unpleasant duties... but most folk, when it comes down to it, would NOT "rather die" than sell their bodies for the necessities of life.

And the bare-fisted guy sounds interesting, do let me know if you find the link. 3nodding
