Anyone out there use yoga as more than a work out method?
Yoga is a practice that, in manner, allows you transcend certain physical limitations to connect with the universe, and with the earth. Through breathing and postures, you attain a sort of higher level of consciousness.
A thought that many times I remind myself when I am feeling just... out of control, is this;
There may be many things in my life I feel helpless to control, but always I can control my breath.
Please feel free to contribute or follow the thread smile

I've explored the basics of Yoga, poses like the tree, upward facing dog, downward facing dog, the child's pose, the warrior, and so forth. I've found it to be a very effective way to ground, and with the greater intake of oxygen it's a great source of motivation; both energizing and relaxing the body.
I should actually take the time to do it more often... /sigh.

I try to keep up on my breath, but the poses... getting me through a whole solute requires a sleeping child and motivation that my chubby bum tends to just LACK most of the time. I looked up some pregnant yoga moves on youtube and I swear it was just like, lean to this side, lean to that side, crap. There was a time when a woman tended feilds until the child dropped, and now they want me to just lean to the side (lol). It's kind of funny.

I regularly practice Yin Yoga, for my mental health. It is know as the quiet practice and its origional purpose was to help people hold a meditation pose longer. Yin is almost all floor based poses that you hold for an avarage of 5min each. Holding the poses for so long gives you an opportunity to meditate, focus on breathing and streach the body's connective tissues. heart

the most interesting yoga experience I've had was at a festival, doing yoga with this woman (who ended up teaching a class on her neurological theory after), the idea was to stretch our bodies and really pay attention to the point at which our body begins compensating for itself. like, at which point in the stretch that our muscles activate and prevent us from going further. but more than that, which muscles volunteer to prevent us from doing which movements. like, we were stretching our hips using the leverage of our torsos, and I noticed that my right hip kept swiveling..hmm why is this? go deeper...ahh, I hurt my hip when I was small...ahh there's nothing wrong with it now...I can let that little flinch go now....
it was yoga as a very effective self knowledge tool, I loved it!

I was at a transformative festival last weekend and I participated in a really fun yoga workshop.
one thing we did that was really fun was that we broke into small groups of 3, and we were each given a totem animal (tiger,dove,dragon,coyote, monkey). we had to discuss what the animal meant to us, then dance the animal in front of the group. it was SO MUCH FUN and then we all imitated each other and danced all the animals.
what I got out of it was that we were using our bodies to express something specific. that we were taking the idea of what an animal represents and then conveying that through our bodies.

I've been belly dancing for about a year and a half, and yoga is a basic part of my life now. It has helped me so much with isolations, and especially with conditioning my arms for certain dance moves. I couldn't imagine what I'd do without my yoga cool down sessions. heart

It became an addiction, the only way I can get that good feeling is by pushing my body further.
