I'm pretty sure Smeyer said their skin is some sort of substance that turns harder than diamond in the sun. How that causes them to sparkle, it is only known in her mind. Of course, they shouldn't be able to move at all then, but... (Logic fail!)
I'm attempting to find the quote where she "explains" it, so I'll try and help.
