What is a Book of Shadows?A Book of Shadows is a journal or diary kept by a witch or warlock wanting to document their spells, aspirations, and dreams (and more). This is helpful in spell modification, recipe exchange, and dream analysis (Among other things). Is there a particular format used in writing a Book of Shadows? Not at all! The Book of Shadows is your own personal documentation. Write it in whatever format suits you best, and include whatever you feel is necessary (Did you try a spell that failed? Write it down, and why you feel it failed; if you want to try the spell again at a later time, you can then go back to this documentation and modify it.). Remember, this book is yours; it's for you to write, and solely for you to read. What do I use to construct the book?Again, this is your call! Most witch's and warlock's will fork out quite a bit of money to obtain a high quality leather bound journal (Lined paper is usually avoided). They do this for the longevity and care of their book, as it will serve sort of like a memoir. However, it's up to you. If you want to save money, most books stores and office supply stores will offer smaller, synthetic leather bound journals that work well. Just remember to keep your Book of Shadows, well... In the shadows; it isn't meant for anyone else to view or handle. Hand-me-Down Books of Shadows; The Family Witch's BibleSome Wiccan families have a special Book of Shadows, passed down from generation to generation. These memoirs, as an individual's Book of Shadows are kept within the family. Any member who has either written in the bible, or is next in line to receive the bible may utilize its content. Do you have a book of shadows? Would you like to make one? Look around here.

OMG y'all! Whether you are using your BOS for some serious ritual notes, or for the recipe for your favourite bath scent, the new age of technology is a blessing! In many ways, it's not as romantic, but many people I know use a three ring binder. On sabbats, or once a year, or whenever they deem necessary, they yank out whatever drives them completely insane, and leave what works. I have a small leather bound expensive super BOS that... I have never had the balls to write it! The book is just so PRETTY! lol.
I would like to have a family BOS later, for my daughter, as kind of an heirloom (if she chooses the path, of course) and/or for my UnbornD of questionable sex *giggles*. That I think will be a hard copy, not a Binder of Shadows.
Another cool thing some people keep seperate is a mirror book. Where the BOS is for rituals and spells and formulae, the mirror book is for your emotions and growth and personal interactions with deity and the earth.
Some people go so far as to seperate their dream journals as well.
Then again, with a binder, you could just get subject seperaters wink . I use a hard book as a BOS and MIRROR book and DREAM journal right now, so (lol)... so as you *Will* (and let it be the whole of the law *totally not wiccan, but we get leway for eclecticism to add some Thelemite wisdom where needed wink *)

I just jot s**t down and keep info away from eyes that aren't supposed to see. I could be more organized I guess. I wouldn't really give the book a formal name though. Just, a book I am most certainly yanking out of hands if I find some poor sap snooping where they don't belong. Which, I wouldn't respond kindly to.

I am a huge believer in using a binder as a book of shadows. Having a bos that is arrangeable. In my first one I kept the correspondences right up front, for a long time, now they have been relegated to back because I just don't need them any more. Also you can keep adding to a section, keep all your crystal work together, all your spells.
I have started one though in a nice bound book, It will contain invocations, poetry and chants, devocations. I have a small one that I keep in my purse or crane bag for things I would like to have access to on day to day basis

Are devocations like a repellant or something?

Does anybody else call it that? Am I a weirdo here?

I've a tendency to rework things according to my tastes and my book shows it. It's mostly snippets from other books I've had. Ideas, charts, crafts, tools, etc. There's also a lot stuff to help me on inner workings, since that was my reason for taking up witchcraft. There's also a tad of Buddhism thrown in there, too. Mostly because I started with it when I initially began looking elsewhere to calm my spirit.

Well im new to this guild and well to wicca in general. Im still learning as much as i can about it and of course my wicca friends dont help me with very much information (even though they said they would >.< ) but at the moment my BOS is just in a three ring notebook but im too ocd to keep it that way and will more than likely change that to putting it in an organized three ring binder...
Just an idea i dont know all the taboos about wicca yet so this could just be a stupid suggestion from ignorance but how about starting like a guild BOS where anyone can post a ritual or chant or random notes they have on wicca so that the information can be shared and multiplied for everyone (especially noobs like me XP )

XxThe ZandraxX Well im new to this guild and well to wicca in general. Well there is only so much Wiccans will be able to reveal, due to their oaths of secrecy. If you're using your binder to make notes, that's the best place for it. When you start out in Paganism and witchcraft your ideas will usually change as you learn more, and you will find you've written things that no longer have a place in your book of shadows. Quote: Just an idea i dont know all the taboos about wicca yet so this could just be a stupid suggestion from ignorance but how about starting like a guild BOS where anyone can post a ritual or chant or random notes they have on wicca so that the information can be shared and multiplied for everyone (especially noobs like me XP ) In Wicca, the BoS is copied by each Initiate from the coven's copy to their own book. You're not to show the contents to non-initiates. So that wouldn't be possible - that is, it wouldn't be a Wiccan book of shadows. The problem with creating such a thing for eclectic Neo-Pagans such as (I assume) yourself, is that each Neo-Pagan will believe and practise different things. So essentially you will just be sharing your favourite pieces, rather than creating a collective book a specific religion or tradition would be able to use.
