The Comrade Report

Hello NCS, Welcome to the Comrade Report.

This is an irregular news letter reporting on guild controversies, events and political machinations. An attempt to simplify them and help you, the political voice, understand what's going on.

Issue number one will cover breaking news. Election results have been challenged.

ELECTION RESULTS?

The voting thread for the not long passed elections has been archived, no longer viewable to those not elected to the council. However, Guild Captain-elect Gracchvs has done his own recount of the election (towhich he made a graph, see below).

The recount results suggest that Vice Captain-Elect Comrade Mann did not actually tie for first place, but instead came in the top five and would simply be a member of the council.

If this recount is acted upon, he may be replaced by Rob or Tank as vice captain.

When queried about whether or not his results should replace the currently accepted one, Gracchvs reported;

"If it turns out that my count is indeed correct, then I think we will have to hold a minor election to decide whether the original results should be grandfathered, or whether the vote should be adheared to". (see his full response and others below).

This view is not completely unoriginal. Member iRage asked for the chance to see the results himself.

As for the election itself. The result either way will mean that Gracchvs is the captain. The real issue, is who is Vice Captain.

Gracchvs said that he believes Comrade Mann would be a more suited candidate than Rob, but did not consider the possibility of Soviet (full quote at bottom).

The public has not reacted and may not react to these changes. However, the public cannot accurately assess the situation so long as the thread remains hidden in the archives. Until then, all news will be sourced from members of the council.

Public opinion may be garnered however, as a brief interview with capitalist Anarchophiliac led to him exclaiming that Comrade Mann is the winner.

The new election results strongly favour the 'left' or 'hardline' faction of Gracchvs with a split opposition from the central and unaligned, and the 'right' or 'moderate' faction of Comrade Mann.

The make-up of the council would not change. Just the vice captaincy.

Quotes in full:

Gracchvs
Comrade Mann is clearly better suited to the task of Vice Chair, though it doesn't really carry powers yet.

This is evidenced by the fact that he engaged in discussion about the constitution while it was being worked on, and this in his own small way helped shape it.

Comrade Robson doesn't do anything in the CC. And while he has had some serious personal issues to deal with --which will likely continue for some time-- he is clearly unsuited for the spot, though it is merely ceremonial at the moment.

That said, it would be in line with democratic norms to change the CC to whatever the correct standing should be.

But!

If it turns out that my count is indeed correct, then I think we will have to hold a minor election to decide whether the original results should be grandfathered, or whether the vote should be adheared to.

As to the results themselves, if true, they show a decided vote of confidence in the platforms of the left, not least among which is the creation of a constitution which will declare 'NCS for NCSers' and which will draw a sharp line between what is acceptable and what is not.

From the self-declared great and glorious Battlecry (iRage)

On election results:
"My results on the election are mixed. One on hand, Gracchvs has demonstrated integrity in that he rarely abuses his power. On the other hand, his dogmatic interpretation of Marxism and his lack of open-mindedness does not help facilitate a safe haven for non-Trotskyist socialists."

On Gracchvs' recount:

"Let me recount it myself to see if Gracchvs knows how to count..."

Anarchophiliac
I think Comrade Mann is the winner!

Most of us are "non-Trotskyist" socialists. I think people are being a bit too paranoid on the basis of the constitution and about the "safe haven" idea, which is purely absurd.

Even though after immediately being elected I pushed for the formation of the EC and posted more interior alligator.

Go suck a lemon Gracchvs!

With your current load, can you honestly say that you would be able to take whatever responsibility comes/will come with Vice?

Also, with regard to the OP, I didn't mention Tank because he hasn't been active in the CC and AFAIK doesn't have s**t to deal with and therefore isn't a serious option.

What Gracchvs Expected Curse To Have
As for my understanding of the election results, if my count is correct--and I say this to prompt the mods to look at the thread to see I didn't skim over anyone's post--we see a number of things:

1: 11 out of 23 electors voted for the left or the left and Tank, who by my understanding was a 'middle ground candidate'.

2: The result is an unambiguous 3 seat CC

3: The two main left candidates were--at the time--understood to be 'hardline' with regards to membership and the 'safe-haven' policy.

4: Those voting for the Right hedged their bets by voting for Kotka.

5: The right is difuse, and could agree only on who they wanted to lead.

Looking at the bottom we see the following table

================================================

a: Gracchvs
b: Comrade Rob
c: Comrade Kotka
d: SoViEtTaNkT34
e: Merewyn
f: Gallenger
g: M-Mann
h: Dis Domnu
i: iRage

how many 1 2 2 10 7 0 1 2 0 0 0
how many 2 5 6 2 2 1 1 2 2 1 0
how many 3 6 4 0 5 0 0 6 2 0 0
================================================
*The figures for 'bi' votes to kotka was originally listed as 1, though looking at the tally I had mistranscribed iRage's vote to have 2 minor votes, listing his vote to Kotka as only 1 point. This table has been changed to correct that mistake.

This provides an interesting look at the actual support given to the candidates. I will look in order of the total votes they revieved, not their total points.

Overall, comrade Tank had the most people voting for him, but half of those votes were of minor confidence. The rest of his votes, however are interesting. 5 of the remaining 7 votes he recieved are votes of full confidence.
The electors that voted for him seemed to see him as either 'leader or just someone to have'. Those that didn't vote for comrade Tank either voted clean-left or were what we could call 'centre-right.' Overall, I think he was seen as a rather lassiez-faire guild captain, and his support came from that.

With regards to the results for comrade Gracchvs, we see the largest number of 'tri' votes accorded to any individual, matched only by comrade Mann. This was off-set by the response by those voting 'bi' for Gracchvs, second only to comrade Rob. The low minor vote turnout can reasonably be understood when looking at who recieved the other votes from those electors: comrades Rob and Tank.

The turnout for comrade Kotka isnt very surprising. While getting votes from the core of the left was a given, she also recieved votes from the right. The interesting thing is that in all cases she was a minor pick. In the end though, with only 14 points, she shows herself to be someone to watch in future elections.

With 6 'bi' votes and 4 'tri' votes, comrade Rob has significantly more confidence invested in him than comrade Tank, whom he tied with. All those that voted for comrade Rob also voted for comrades Gracchvs, Kotka or Tank, with only one exception. His position as an 'obvious left candidate' is... obvious.

While recieving great confidence from over a quarter of the electorate, comrade Mann garnered little support elsewhere, with only 4 minor votes. Clearly the front-man for the Right, most who voted for him in any capacity voted also for comrade Tank, showing a tendency for the right toward 'non-intervention' and an open door policy, with four of the 'tri' voters giving a minor vote to Tank.

Now I doubt Curse would agree with all of what I wrote there, this kind of look at the figures, in addition to an "I asked him to grab the numbers for me, so he didn't randomly decide to recount on his own" comment.

I recognize that I have duties here, and as a result I will adhere to them. What's been on my plate was mere backlash which has currently subsided to some degree. So as it stands I see no reason why I am not able fulfill my duties as Vice if the CM so decides upon that.

It's hard to cover eveythng without losing focus. The solution was to do two articles, one on the controversy one on the results themselves, but, by briefing over the results I allow for the discussion to go into these things.

But yes, I kind of did request these stats. If you wish such a creditation to occur I shall add it. However, I did say I'd credit you in a similar way to the pollsters in papers, and even if those polls are requested (and indeed they can be) they are not mentioned that way.

The implication of the article as written is that all of a sudden I did a recount and found things not to my liking.

If you had instead said "At my request for access to the election results, including who voted for who, Gracchvs made up this pretty little table for me. It turns out that the original results were false!"

We would have a more honest lead into the story, and a more accurate one.
