my son was diagnosed around the age of 6, only after being thrown out of pre-school,and not settling in infant school, then he was 8 we were told that his autism was bad enough that we should not expect him ever to get anywhere and not to worry about schooling to much...5 years later he is in a main stream school with a special needs unit but is in mainstream classes (with a helper) for mathe science english and history ...infact he is so good with history that he sometimes puts his teacher right when she gets a fact wrong !!

My cousin has Asperger's and he is definitely the smartest person I know. He's in honors classes in his high school. He's amazing with computers. I would never guess that he had it.
On the other hand, one of my friends works with a severely autistic child. This is just what I've heard from another friend, but I've heard that the girl's main entertainment and desire is to hit herself in the head. Anyone would be able to tell that there's something different about the girl if they see her acting like that.
If people only recognize that girl's type of autism, then they can't realize that there are amazing people like my cousin on the same spectrum. It's just stereotyping. They assume.

i have autism and many people treat me as a retard so i know what you mean. and belive this some idot tried to tease me for reading saying reading makes you a retard and he's supposed to be the normal one? gonk

See, people who assume autistic people are retarded just piss me off to no end.
You can read my thread about my friend.
But Alot of autistic people specialize and 1 or more subjects relating to school. e.i. my friend is a total science major. She rocks at it.

My brother has severe autism and we were told he would never speak, walk, or sign. I taught him how to walk and sign. I have never taught him the sign "love." A few weeks ago, he signed to me that he loves me. We are also working on sounds of words. He can also spell his name, where he lives, and knows his phone number.

I have a friend who's autistic, but he's a topnotcher in our class, and he qualified for a high quality university. His only flaw is his antisocial personality, that gets him bullied evrytime.

I have lots of traits of aspergers and the only ones that I don't have is the fact i'm social and I acctually love my family and I was able to get off anti depressents very quickly people think I'm stupid and spread romours non stop once someone came up to me asking if I had tourettes because my voice is loud all the time I told him back off or I will bring my blood stained metal pipe tommorow surprisingly he walked away and since I can punch like a man it's okay

no freakin way!! autistic people arent stupid!! they have dificulties with communicating and understanding...that doesnt make them stupid, i think teachers act like that because they are simply embarrassed to have the child as a student...ALL autisic people have something very unique about them...even if its video games! they all have something they rock at!! like learning, playing instruments, etc., some people are just dumb...autistics are just like everyone else in the world! if i had to be an assisstant in an autistic class, i would be more than happy to help out! biggrin

She graduated with honours :< Suck on that people who call her stupid. scream almost all autistic people are smart! my friend is autistic, and she COULD have gotten into AVID which is a program at our school, those are the kids that are more likey to get into college! but this is a good guild, cuz even though im not autistic, i can imagine how autistics feel to be around other just like them! it must feel great, autistics feel lonely and trapped inside a wall...but they can break threw that wall with other people around them!
