Artemis is the virgin goddess. All her follower take a vow to remain a virgin forever. One legend speaks of a nymph, a follower of Artemis, that broke her vow.

Callisto was the most beautiful of the nymphs, one that Zeus couls not ignore. Zeus courted Callisto, and eventually, she gave in. Artemis was furious with Callisto, and since the goddess was a lower goddess than the great Zeus, she punished Callisto, by turning her into a bear. Legend says that Callisto and her son, born of Zeus, became the constellations, the great bear and the little bear.

Other legends say the Artemis killed Callisto, as to punish Zeus for courting out of wedlock, as the god was married to Hera. Other legends say that Callisto was unwilling to the god, so he forced her, and Artemis punished her still. No one is sure which legend is correct, the gods hid the truth to well to be sure.........
