Daedelus Robotics.

Your friendly family cybernetics and technology company.

The facade of the office building is clean and modern, with a style that harks back to Greek architecture. There are fountains and neatly manicured bushes out front, and a vast porch with circuitry-themed scuplutes arching between the columns.

A wide-screen computer image opens up as you near the front entrance. Two images materialize: one of a CGI woman's face, and one of a touch-activated keypad. The face begins to talk to you:

Heather sighed, rolling her eyes. If she had wanted something akin to a customer service computer she'd have called.

The CGI woman's eyes watch Heather as she starts to walk away.

Wait. Where are you going? Don't you want to push a number?

"I'm waiting for you to get me an actual person," Heather said turning on her heel, and pacing back. "I've got an inquirey that is sorted under 'other'."

"I might just have one of those myself. I imagine we wait here for a representative."

The CGI woman looks sad, her generated lip trembles, and she backs up on the screen.

Hold on, customers. I'll be right out!

She runs at the camera, and hits the screen, but can't seem to get out (she is a CGI girl, after all) She starts bumping and shoving and pushing at the screen, trying to pry herself out. Then she starts to scream, a digital sound, and the lines of her programming flicker.

Then, she shuts off.

And he is standing behind them with a remote.

His voice is feather soft, and monotone. His eyes are as vacant as a robot's, but he's real: pale flesh, poorly circulating blood, and brittle bone. "You'll have to forgive our customer service program. She's been on the fritz lately. Can I help you, perhaps?"

"Well, my name is Myles, and since I heard of your arrival in Crosshaven I've been wanting to speak with you. I've read your articles in the more common publications, and since my Gift relates peripherally to your field I am interested in your work, and you may be interested in me as well. However, the girl was here shortly before I was, and since her interest was also filed under miscellaneous by your secretary panel's standards, I'm assuming she also would like to speak with you."

He looks to Heather. "Would I be correct in that assumption?"

Heather smiled, and courtsied. "Indeed I would. I am Heather Go with the radio station, WTMI. I was wondering if you'd like to purchase some ad time on my station."

He nods to Myles, looking curious and interested in everything he may have to say, and curious about this gift of his.

He looks back to the girl, first here, out of politeness, and twitches his lip a bit. "Ah, the radio station." A small forced smile thrusts itself onto his face. "For a discussion of business, we should go to my office, Miss Go." His eyes blink heavily, an almost unnatural gesture.

"I hope you will wait for us, Mr. Myles, I would love to speak to you at length. To make your wait pass more comfortably, there are plenty of things to amuse you inside. You can view one of our product videos in the theater, or I'll have one of my techs do an interactive demonstration for you." He pushes a button on his remote and speaks into it. "Jerikah, deploy yourself to the front. I have a guest for you to show around."

Presently, the front doors part and the one that must be "Jerikah" steps out. She is shaped in the curves of a real woman and dressed professionally, but unmistakeably not a real woman at all. Her skin is white latex of the finest quality; her hair--real hair that hangs long and blond from a braided crown at the top of her head; her eyes, emerald eyes of glass; her gait, jerky and ginger, like stop-motion animation, positively unreal. There is the faint hum of energy running through her functions, which is almost melodic.

As she draws near, she scans both of them quickly.

"This gentleman is Myles, take him on the tour, if he wishes. Go wherever he likes in unrestricted areas. Make sure he enjoys himself for the next hour or so."

She turns, and says to him in a voice that is based upon a deep woman's voice with soft-consonants, but a computer voice nonetheless.

Good afternoon Mr. Myles. I am pleased to be your guide. Please do not stray from me once we are inside.

He smiles a little, and then turns back to miss Go. "If you will follow me, madam?"

"Thank you Mr. Tearwater." He turns to the guide and extends a hand on the off chance that she'd like to shake it. "You are called Jerikah, then?"

Heather courtsies, and smiles charmingly at her host. "Lead on, my good man."

Jerikah does shake his hand, softly and like a real woman would. Yes. I'm Mr. Tearwater's personal assistant. Shall we? She shows Myles the way inside. The entry lobby is huge, domed, and the space from ten feet off of the floor up to the ceiling is full of suspended sculptures. Intricate gears, stylized bodies in motion, and hammered steel depicting circuitry. The place is impossibly clean, like an operating room.

She moves to the welcome screen, a massive grid of liquid crystal screens, and turns to him. Her articulations are unnaturally smooth in the gesture.

The screen is in the middle of a looped show, and a slideshow of models rolls across the screen. It settles on one, a gentleman in studious clothes.

Zephyr is a personal study model used by academic institutions, professors, attorneys, and doctors. He can read and recognize text of all differnt fonts, translate all major world languages, and he can access information via a wireless internet connection built right in.

Jerikah says: Would you like to watch the show? It's up to you, we can visit the showroom, and I could give you a demonstration, if you like.

She displays so many small gestures, like slipping a finger through her hair to sweep a loose strand in place.

He walks to a secondary entrance, and leads her down a hallway and up a flight of stairs to a small, neat office. He offers her a seat, and sits himself.

"So tell me about wtmi, miss Go."

There is a curious clock on the wall behind him. It looks just like any wooden penduclum wall-mount clock, except for a little red light on the face, and what looks like speaker holes. She has the feeling that it's watching her.

"Perhaps we could go on to the show later, but first I am interested in talking to you. I'm not here to purchase, I'm here to learn. You, for example. I have no idea if I'm asking a personal question, but are you sentient?"

"WTMI is the new local radio station. I'm having to go around, selling the ads myself because of a lack of staff, for now. I thought I'd stop by, and see if you'd be interested in buying some ad time on my station to let people know about your wonderful products," Heather explained, glancing uneasily at the clock.
