There once was a wedding in which the goddesses Athena,Hera,And Aphrodite and the rest of Olympus were invited...all but Eris because she was a troublemaker. And so Eris devised a plan to ruin it all.(Cue evil music and maniacal laughter.)Eris tossed a beautiful golden apple with an inscription "Kallisti, Or for the fairest one."Naturally the three goddesses fought over it.
They asked Zeus who the fairest one was.Zeus in all his Fatherly wisdom asked a mortal prince.Hera offered political power; Athena promised skill in battle; and Aphrodite tempted him with the most beautiful woman in the world: Helen, wife of Menelaus of Sparta.The human gave the apple to Aphrodite.But the problem was Helen was married so her husband waged war on the prince.And that was how the Trojan war was started.All with little Eris.^W^
The Greeks viewed Eris as a very bad goddess.But it is not necessarily that way today.The Discordians follow Eris in a very lighthearted manner.
Here is a quote from the Principia Discordia, the first holy book of Discordianism, attempts to clear this up:
"One day Mal-2 consulted his Pineal Gland and asked Eris if She really created all of those terrible things. She told him that She had always liked the Old Greeks, but that they cannot be trusted with historic matters. "They were," She added, "victims of indigestion, you know."
The story of Eris being snubbed and indirectly starting the Trojan War is recorded in the Principia, and is referred to as the Original Snub. The Principia Discordia states that her parents may be as described in Greek legend, or that she may be the daughter of Void. She is the Goddess of Disorder and Being, whereas her sister Aneris (called the equivalent of Harmonia by the Mythics of Harmonia) is the goddess of Order and Non-Being. Their brother is Spirituality.
Eris' chaos that the Discordians attempt to make is akin to a internet meme.
