It's become a rather big story in the US. Anyway, Scotland let out Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, the Lockerbie bomber, out on compassionate grounds, due to his suffering from advanced prostate cancer. Chances are, he's going to die in a month or so anyway.
This guy is linked to the killing of some 250 people, via airline crash. This guy is greeted as a hero in his home country. Even Qaddafi has gotten into the media due to the matter.
So. If you were a Scot and had an accused mass murder-terriorist on your hands, with terminal cancer, what would you have done?

People may not feel good about it, and Qaddafi may make a spectacle out of it, but...this could actually be good for Scottish, even Western PR.

Under my rule he'd have been executed long before he could even get cancer.
Only terrorists sponsored by MY state allowed xd

Releasing terrorists on compassionate grounds could actually contribute, if minutely, to winning the ideological conflict between west and east. But yeah, terrorists suck and probably should have to spend life in prison/ suffer the death penalty. I, therefore, propose that we first imprison terrorists, then secretly give them cancer by injecting some sort of gas into their cell, so they can be safely released and we can be happy knowing we got the bad guy and some people in Libya won't hate us as much. Two birds with one stone.

So... this is a mass murderer?
Ok then?
Why is he not being treated as a mass murderer?

Huh. Now imagine for a moment that this was an anarchist or some sort of leftist militant. Anyone want to bet against 'he wouldn't be let out'?

Gracch, I was being sardonic...
Really though. Instead of wasting federal funds on someone who is already on the last legs of life...why NOT let him see his family...his wife, his children...Sure, he killed hundreds of people, but after spending what was it...30 years in prison...to know that you've been given a year left to live sucks when you don't have ANYONE to spend it with.
You know comrade, compassion is a virtue.

You know comrade, compassion is a virtue. Compassion may be a virtue, and we dont see the capitalist state act very virtuous when it is a leftist in prison for similar crimes. I am pointing out that the capitalist state can afford to be 'compassionate' here, because showing islamic terrorists that you are weak will only encourage terrorism by weaklings--and thus make likely the increase of repressive powers of the state against the working class--but that it cannot afford to be so compassionate toward those working for the overthrow of capitalism as a whole because the working class by definition holds the key to society.

You're right, although occasionally you do see people who are compassionate for the working class, such as some of the early 1900s presidents who supported strike workers, safer working conditions, and were against large government and corporations.
Too lazy to peruse through the internet to find them. Damn US History...why can't I remember.

Frankly, I'm wonder if there's even a comparable case with in the last decade or two. Leftist-terrorist with terminal illness let out on compassionate grounds?
I dunno, just doesn't seem like something that happens often. Not out of particular malice so much as the odds of it even happening...

But do you really think a leftist would have a chance?
