The bell on the door rang cheerfully as the door opened to announce a new customer. The chic interior of the DEATHBUCKS coffee shop leaned heavily on black and white but with a pleasing aesthetic to it. It seemed to be haunt for models and actors, apparently espresso brought out the beautiful in people. It happened to bring in two rather attractive looking men today, as Leon and Jacob made their way to the front counter. "This is a popular spot to get coffee." Leon said blandly.
"Well gee Leo, you'd think so as it is a coffee shop, geez I know I'm new but I'm no where near that dumb." Jake laughed as he stepped up to study the menu, his hands casually tucked into his jeans. "Deathspresso? That's the name of a drink?! It's called DEATH!? Who wants to drink death?" Of course his musings weren't actually directed at anyone but Leon still shook his head at his partner. Why couldn't he just keep his thoughts to himself. "GraveAwakening, for energy." He read another title off the menu. Smiling at the barista standing behind the counter he asked, "What do I order if I want an iced latte?"
Without missing a beat the girl smiled and replied, "Stone Cold Latte."
Huh, it must've been a frequent question. "Well okay, I'll take one of those, and you Leo?"
"Don't call me that." The dark haired boy glanced over the menu quickly. For a day with Jake he'd have, "A Deathspresso."
"You're going to drink the death potion!?"
"It's just an espresso, whatever." Leon rolled his eyes and set his portion of the money on the counter. Come find me at the table when you've finished gawking." Turning with a shrug, he walked over to a low set table surrounded by cushions instead of chairs.
"Forgive him, he needs help." Jake chided as he paid his part for the drinks.

"I don't understand why we couldn't have gone to the yummy looking ice cream place instead." Zoe whined. She was dragging her feet as they entered the coffee shop, her shoulders drooping in a rather pathetic version of the 'abused puppy dog' posture. Dressed in a pair of bright pink micro mini shorts and a black shirt that cheerfully screamed 'Visit Vietnam!' she didn't really fit into the stereotype customer of Deathbucks.
"Because." the abstained you idiot was clearly written across Jared's face. "The last time we went you tried to get behind the counter and lick the man. I'm not going to get banned from the ice cream store because you don't have self control." at least here the people looked snooty enough to ignore her if she got out of control.
"Fine, fine." Zoe looked around, face visibly perking at being surrounded by so many pretty people. "Still don't understand why you don't want to wear our shirt together." they had bought it on their first mission! It was something to be proud about, really. Scanning and spotting a couple of free seats near a table surrounded by cushions instead of chairs, she watched another customer walk in that direction. Not if she got there first!
"You have to tell me what you want." Jared yelled out as he watched her make a mad dash to the seats.
"Get me an iced latte with plenty of raspberry syrup, Red!"
Jared sighed, and nodded his head, looking away. If she was going to make a fool of herself trying to steal someone else's seat... well, he might as well pretend not to know her for now. Besides, that was one of the reasons he had refused to wear that stupid Vietnamese tourism board shirt : it was just rubbing it in that they were stuck with each other for life. Or at least until he managed to reach Death Scythe status.
"Raspberry latte with plenty of syrup, and a double espresso." he ordered, frowning. "Whatever that is in your language."

"So, a double Deathspresso and a Stone Cold Latte with raspberry blood?" The barista smiled happily as she plugged in the order and marked the cups with clever little tombstone and cross marks. It was like a secret language that only coffee shop employees could understand. "That'll be $7.50." With a cheerful ding the register opened.
"I never know what to call these things either." Jake said off handedly, still standing by the counter and waiting for their drinks. Well that was probably because he'd never been there before but he didn't need to wear his 'new person' neck sign everywhere did he? "But a rose by any other name... you know?" Glancing over toward where the girl had bounded off he had to press his lips together to stop a laugh, of all the gin joints in all the world, they had to go for the same table.
Leon had just settled on a black cushion when he caught a movement from the corner of his eye, a girl had just appeared, from no where it seemed. Where had she come from?! Glancing at her, he wasn't sure if he was supposed to say anything or just match her in a staring contest. After a few terse seconds he asked, "Can I help you with something?" As he was sitting he had to stare up to see her, damn his bangs for always getting in the way, he'd cut them off some day... when he could bring himself to care more. Flicking a hand to brush them out of his eyes he merely stared at the girl. What did she want?
Laughing slightly to himself, Jake just enjoyed the show as he watched the two meet. "Geez, and my partner thinks I'm a loser."

Jared winced and handed the money over. He wasn't really frugal, but how come places like this always seemed to be overpriced? Although it could be worse... really. So he grinned and nodded at the fellow victim. "As long as they know what I want, right?" he responded, grinning. Following the man's eyes, he looked over to where Zoe had clearly lost the race, and winced. s**t. This was going to be embarrassing. "I'm not with her." well, that was a lie. The man had clearly seen them talking together before the order, hadn't he? Still. It made him feel better saying that.
Partner? Jared perked up and examined him a little closer. The guy looked older than Jared was, which meant maybe he was a much more experienced shibusen student? Technician or weapon, though? "Shibusen?" he asked, wondering. Maybe he could ask for advice! Such as: how do you deal with bossing your technician around? Ooh. The day was certainly looking up. "I'm Jared." he said, introducing himself first. Might as well, right?
Zoe stared at the guy who was sitting in her seat. She knew she had just won the staring contest because he had given in to speak to her first. Well, she couldn't actually kick him off now that his butt was kissing the cushion, could she? Besides... he was kind of cute! Not as cute as L maybe, but almost. With a grin, she took a seat riiight in front of him and offered her hand.
"My name is Zoe. What's your name?" she asked, completely avoiding the question. She was being so subtle, introducing herself and taking a seat. She pointed in the direction of the barista. "That's Red, my weapon. He's getting me my drink."
All stealth-like, really.

Jake found himself grinning at the other guy. Well it really shouldn't have been that strange running into another Shibusen student there, but it did seem like a lucky coincidence. "Yeah, I'm Jake. Nice to meet you Jared." He extended his hand as he glanced at the man. He claimed to not have come with the girl, but Jake was almost certain that he'd seen them come in together. Well that was fine though, there were times when he felt that Leon would rather not be associated with him so he could sort of understand. "That's my technician, Leon, over there." He gestured with his hand in the direction of the table.
"Drinks up!" The barista called as she set both sets of drinks on the counter.
"Guess I'm playing waiter?" Jake remarked with a grin. As he picked up his and Leon's cups, so clearly marked with a blood red sharpie. "Want to come share the table?"
What was she doing?! Well, he supposed that the table was large enough to accommodate all of them, but he hadn't really expected to have to interact with anyone. (He'd already begun to not count his partner as part of the general populace.) Not wanting to be extremely rude, he reached his hand out and shook hers briefly. "Leon." He replied quietly. And because she had said it first, "My partner Jacob is over there as well." And then silence, there really wasn't anything that he felt he needed to say.
Silently willing Jake's talkative dumb a** to hurry up, Leon wished he'd been just a little slower because then she could've had the damn table they could've sat somewhere else, now he was stuck in what would sure be an event that would require some participation from him.

So he was a weapon too? Jared wondered what rank he was at now. Surely two... maybe three? Who knows? He hadn't actually studied up on the average age, because he was sure it didn't exist. Still, this was very interesting. Well. If they were all going to go sit together, he supposed it made things very different. Picking up his drink and Zoe's, he nodded. "I don't really think either of us have a choice." he answered. Both to being waiters for their technicians, and to sharing tables. There was something very settled about Zoe's posture that let him know they wouldn't be moving tables: nor would she really give the other man a chance. Damn it. It wasn't safe to let her loose anywhere, was it?
As they walked over to the table, he frowned. "That's my technician, Koh." he said. So he had pretended not to know her: couldn't really avoid it now if they were going to sit together. "She's um... well. She takes some getting used to?" Jacob seemed like an easy going man. The posture of Leon, not so much.
Zoe brightened. "You're a technician? Awesome! So am I." seeing that the two men were walking towards them (and unable to decide if the technician or the weapon was the better looking of this duo) she beamed. "How long have you been together?" it felt as if she was asking someone how long they had been married. But she supposed the question wasn't too different in impliance. Technicians and Weapons had very good relationships, didn't they?
She reached out for her drink pointing to the seat across her. Jared could sit _there_. That way, she could sit in between the two boys. Damn, she was smart. She was getting better that this subtlety thing (yeah right). "This place is really nice! Could get used to this whole black and white theme. Red's favorite color is red, though." sure. As if anyone cared really. But she liked to talk. Seemed like this one didn't as much as she did.

Ah hah! So they did come in together, Jake knew he hadn't been imagining that. But as he didn't feel the need to embrass the guy he let it pass. "That's alright Leon there takes some getting used to as well. So we've got our work cut out for us." Jake wondered just what kind of girl she was that he'd need to be warned before meeting her. She couldn't possibly be any worse than some of the groupies he'd met when his band was together. Those chicks were Crazy with a capital C.
As they reached the table, he saw her gesture to the chair across from her... but was she motioning him or her partner? Shrugging and figuring that she wouldn't motion him if she didn't knew him he took the seat across from his own technician and slid his drink to him. Piping into whatever conversation they were having he said, "Hey I'm Jake." And extended a friendly hand and smile toward her.
"A week." Leon replied to her question and hoped that now that Jake was here that was all the conversation that would be needed from him. He glanced a the girl's weapon and wondered if what form he would take. He was beginning to notice that no one really turned into what they seemed they'd be.
"A week?" Jake echoed, "Oh, yeah, that's the amount of time that we've been partnered." He said it so easily like it wasn't strange that there was a 4 year age gap between the two of them. "This place seems like the kind of place that could grow on a person, though still wish I could call a coffee a coffee here."

Jared wondered what this Leon was like that: for one moment he had the horrific image of a male Zoe: but that was too much. Besides, Leon certainly didn't appear like another Zoe. So instead he just followed the older man and took his seat: the one Zoe had assigned him, of course. "A week?" the man certainly looked older than a new weapon would be: maybe there was a story behind that. Maybe he had been assigned before, to someone else and had... woooah. That strided onto dangerous territory (namely the thought of leaving Zoe for someone else) so he decided to ignore it.
"We've been together... a little bit around that as well?" he turned to Zoe with a questioning glance as he handed her the raspberry drink. Zoe nodded rapidly at the question a little bit distracted though by the arrival of another good looking man. A Zoe sandwich it was now! Wow.
"A little over." she commented, grinning as she tugged on her T-shirt. "We just went on our first mission, to Vietnam? It was AWESOME. Plus we signed for our own place yesterday." her smile was giddy as she took a sip of the raspberry ice latte. Totally epic! "You guys are new too! That's great. How are you finding it? Do you two live together?" oh wow. They should have sleepovers then. "It's nice to meet you, Jake. Zoe. Or Koh. Call me Koh. Everyone calls me Koh." she was beaming, feeling the first thrills of a coffee shop romance.
At his comment, she nodded. "I always get Red to take my orders." she said, confident that her weapon wouldn't let her down. This was really good. Raspberry flavored caffeine! "You want some? It's good. Really good." she waved it in front of Leon's face, and then Jacob, still unable to make up her mind.

Jake took a moment to look at the table almost very nearly sheepishly. Geez, guess he'd have to tell everyone the sad little story. "Uh yeah a week. I'm what you'd call a special case, meaning I had not a freaking clue that weapons and technician even existed until about a month ago when I changed form for the first time in my memory. So yeah, there you have it, I'm no more advanced than any of you, in fact I'm probably a little behind." By this point Jake was staring at a dot on the wall some inches above Leon's shoulder and sucking on his iced latte. It was so embarrassing to have to tell people that.
"But hey," he exclaimed trying to change the subject quickly, "congratulations on your first mission. That's great. We signed up for ours so hopefully we'll be heading out for one soon." See nothing to gawk at here, move along folks. Jake looked pointedly at Leon, his face clearly saying that he felt Leon should join the conversation. He would pull him out of that shell if it was the last thing he did... okay well probably not, close to the last thing he did... yeah that was it. "I'll pass thanks," Jake said as Koh offered her cup syrup drowned latte.
Frowning slightly with a shrug, Leon set down his cup after a quick sip. "No we don't share the same apartment, but we live in the same building. We decided that we both would like to have our own space. It's a little costly but it'll work out fine for us." Leon's voice was faintly clipped like he was going to be giving a report on it. A character flaw from his straight business or nothing attitude. "Congratulations on your mission." He added after another guilty look from Jake.
Leon shook his head at Koh's offer and continued to sip his espresso. "You don't have to order with their names, they're smart enough to figure out what it is you want if you just call it what it is."
"I know, but might as well play along right? They probably make the drink better if you call it by the right name." Well that was a lie and clearly one, but he had to say something. "Or you know, maybe not..."

It was such a sad and romantic story! Zoe decided. How unique, like something out of a book. Deciding that officially Jake was her new hero from a great big battle book called Shibusen: Jake's Story, she reached out to pat him in sympathy. Actually, it was just a lame excuse to pat him, end of story. She would protect him from all the evils of the world! Like decaf coffee and nail polish that chipped in the first hour.
They didn't live together? Deciding that _that_ threw all her thoughts of sweaty male sleepovers out the window she frowned with a nod. Well. "I guess you're private folk."
Jared sent Zoe a look that clearly read 'I WAS a private person too. But you just won't have it!'. But Zoe pointedly ignored it and instead moved on to another important topic. "Where do you live, then? Maybe we live near each other?" Oooh. She could go borrow sugar off them, or something. Do something sweet and neighborly to win her extra points with hot neighbors. Good plan Zoe.
Jared flushed a little bit at the congratulations. He couldn't help it: praise did that to him. He nodded though, and frowned as he saw the guilty look that Jake sent his direction. He thought it was admirable really: have no idea about this sort of stuff, get thrown into the middle of it and STILL manage to be polite? That took guts! "We're going through all of this together then, so I guess we can go to each other for advice?" he asked this to Jake, and smiled. "What is your weapon form?" sometimes it felt so personal about asking this, but other times, it felt like guy talk. Weapon talk.
This older guy was endearing! Look how he was trying to make conversation. Maybe he liked talking too, the same way she liked talking. Zoe nodded her head. "I bet they take secret pleasure out of seeing who actually knows the correct names for these drinks." she motioned with her plastic cup to the barista. "Maybe if you're good enough they give you free stuff?" Just talk, really. At Jared's question though she perked up with a little giggle. "Jared turns into a special sword." she announced, with a smirk. Special alright. Bendy.

Again, Jake directed the living question to Leon to try and pull the boy out of his shell. By force if he had to. The brown haired youth was not impressed with this tactic but shrugged and answered anyway. "We live about 5 blocks from Shibusen. On Faith Lane, 5801." He leaned back in his chair and continued, only because he knew Jake would somehow force it out of him, "We've both spent a lot of time living on our own, it would be counter productive to start having a roommate now." And he didn't want to have to depend on anyone, even for menial chores.
"But we only live across the hall from each other so it's not like we live that far apart." Jake chimed in as Leon got the annoyed look on his face that said he wanted to leave. The younger boy brushed a few bangs out of his face and took another sip of his espresso, this was getting tiresome. "You know I didn't even know what kind of sword I was until I met up with this guy." Jake took the conversation off of Leon and animatedly started to trace his weapon form on the table. "It's a gunblade, can you believe it? But I can't actually fire bullets, which is a shame. But there is a trigger and revolver chamber. When the trigger's pulled the blade ignites! Isn't that righteous?!"
Geez look at that guy talk and talk. Leon's quiet eyes observed the scene as he contemplated to himself just what kind of person he was stuck with. He just wouldn't shut up, kind of like that girl at the table. Listen to him, all pleased with himself for being able to turn into a gunblade, there was no point in having pride in being Rank One. Why were they all so excited? They were at the bottom, their focus should be less on camaraderie and more on advancement. "You'll be a better weapon when you learn more."
"Ah c'mon Leon I know that." Yup, back into his own little hold he went. Jake wanted to reach down into that hole and yank him up by the throat. "We'll reach Rank Two before you know it. Trust me." He grinned and then shrugged off his partner's negative attitude. "So what form do you take Jared?" Maybe later on they could show each other. It'd be pretty chill to see someone else change. And these two seemed like a friendly group, and so far neither of them seem to be too offended by Leon's stand off-ish behavior. Maybe going back to school wouldn't be all that bad.

Counter productive? Everything a weapon and a technician did together was productive, no matter what it was. But Zoe nodded her head sagely as if she actually understood what the word meant in their kind of relationship. "Oh?" there was a mark of disappointment in her voice. No borrowing sugar off this male goodness pair. She'd have to settle on borrowing... taxi money to make it back to her house, or something. "Too bad, I think we live a neighborhood away?" she looked at Jared for confirmation and he simply shrugged. Sure. Better to have Zoe think they were too far away to play with.
A gun blade? Jared's eyes glowed with admiration. That was awesome! So it was this guy who had pulled Jake out into his weapon form? There was a story there, and one he'd ask for later when the atmosphere was less new. Maybe he had finally found a weapon he could look up to, someone who didn't scare the crap out of him. "It ignites?" he'd actually never seen a gun blade in action, and only had a vague idea of what it looked like. But it sounded so cool. Better by far than he what turned into.
"I turn into a flame blade." he said, coolly. Trying to hide the embarrassment that touched his cheeks in a slight flush. It wasn't such a big deal, it wasn't some ordinary sword and he was proud of that. His complex was all Zoe's fault, commenting on him the way she had the first time he had turned into a weapon in front of her. It was annoying, this little weakness. But it was okay if he said just that. A flame blade. It almost sounded cool, didn't it?
Zoe snorted, ruining the effect. "He turns into a wavy blade?" she drew the outline with two fingers in the air with a grin. "It's quite cool." she added, an small admission really that she didn't mean all the teasing she doled out to her partner. "But it's kinda funny too. Like, a normal blade? But all curly. Kinda looks perverted really, except it's sharp and it cuts through people." it had been AWESOME the way he had just decapitated the bad guy, that mission. Her eyes lit.
"I know, right? They'll be better weapons. But won't it be super fantastic when we reach rank two, finally? I mean, it hasn't been a long time since we've been together but we went on our first mission? Red's trying to train me at the gym because my stamina sucks, but I make up for it with other things, you know? I'm very flexible and I can jump. But he wants me to last longer." she frowned, looking at Leon. This guy probably had good stamina. Probably practiced all the time using his stamina too.
Oh hello. Perverted thought.

Well there were small miracles weren't there? Leon had been absurdly and irrationally afraid that she'd say they lived in the same complex. One could only imagine what would happen if she turned up at his door one night... He'd probably just send her across the hall to Jake. But if he knew the type, and he liked to think he did, she'd just bounce back over eventually. And this was a completely irrational and pointless line of logic. "We think that the actual ignition may have something to do with the accid..."
"Hey, let's not give away all our secrets at one time." Jake cut in before Leon could finish. The less people who knew about that story the better in his opinion. "So a flame sword?" Changing the topic now. "That's pretty chill. Nothing to be sad about there, that's one wicked weapon. You can do a lot more damage with the kris style blade than you would with a normal straight sword." Jake tried to bolster the young man with his stunning array of weird sword facts. After having turned into a bladed weapon of some sort, he'd taken the time to look into some of them.
"Leon's got us on a pretty tough training regiment. Half the time we work together, trying to get our movements in sync. And to keep up on being aware of where the other person is. And the other half of the time we train by ourselves, mostly working out and building endurance, but it's got to be on our own. Leon's really big into self control and solitude." Jake explained as he drew his cup along the table leaving water ring patterns.
Leon glanced at the others casually, why was the girl staring at him like that? "There's no guarantee that we'll always be near each other when a conflict should arise. There's nothing strange with being prepared for the worst." Directing his gaze at Zoe, Leon continued, "You two would do well to train to be capable separately as well. If you're both strong apart form each other, you'll only be better off when you come together."
"Don't pay him much mind, he just hasn't taken his nap today." Jake said after his partner's speech left a chill to the air, metaphorically. "It's good that you can find your weaknesses and focus on them. And that you'll work together to fix them shows that you're a good team." I'm kind of envious, were the words Jake didn't say.

Well there were small miracles weren't there? Leon had been absurdly and irrationally afraid that she'd say they lived in the same complex. One could only imagine what would happen if she turned up at his door one night... Accident? What kind of accident? Zoe perked up at the thought that there was some juicy gossip there that neither seemed willing to share at the moment. Drawing circles on the water ring left by Jake's cup, she wondered just when they would be close enough to share secrets. She could trade, give away Jared's secrets in exchange
Jared relaxed at Jake's words, nodding his head. "That's the theory, anyways." he said, nodding. "Plus I think in terms of damage, if have something that goes straight through flesh and it isn't straight, there must be more inflicted within the body?" he listened at their training regiment, liking it. It was true, really. If they trained apart they could work on their own strengths without being distracted... he had already been tempted to do so, because he never had enough time focusing on himself with Zoe needing so much help. Still. He didn't trust the thought of her alone. She'd probably end up goofing off at the sauna, or something.
He grinned, flushing with pleasure at Jake's words. How had the two of them gotten stuck with each other? Leon seemed so cold and... professional. Actually, he admired that. THAT was more like what a technician should be like. Maybe to a lesser extent, but still. He grinned. Nap, was it? They seemed to be at ease with other, able to work off each other's dynamics.
"We try most of the time." he answered. "Normally we use the GYM, because they have everything we need. Although." he frowned. "I would have liked to have a room in the house, you know? With some equipment, and things. But Zoe thinks that would go way over our budget, and..." he shrugged. Well, had they rented a three bedroomed apartment, she had argued her pedicure equipment would need space as well. Something about training in a room full of nail varnish wasn't exactly what he envisioned a private room to be.
"We should go together, once." he said, speaking to the weapon. "I mean, training in general is the same and different for everyone, but it'll be nice to work alongside another weapon." they were different from others. From their technicians.
Plus he'd spent so much time with Zoe, he felt he was testosterone deficient.

"Yeah that's the place we go too. Well at least that's where we go for solo training, nothing like lifting something heavy to make you feel like a man right?" Jake laughed easily as Leon sent him an annoyed look. "When we're training together we usually go outside the city and find a nice expanse of nothing. Since most of it has to do with just us being able to work together we don't really need the machines and added danger of people around. Like if we were going to try something dangerous we wouldn't want to hurt someone else in the process." Smiling, Jake thought back to some of their first sessions, and how they'd accidentally lit a tree on fire.
"Your training space should fit your training purpose." Leon added quietly. "It's probably best that you continue to use the GYM's location rather than try and outfit a room of your own. Anything you create wouldn't serve as a very good substitute. If all you're looking for is lite training, you'd still be wise to go to the gym." It was probably the most Leon had said at one time in the entire time they'd been there. Jake merely shook his head and hoped that Jared wasn't easily offended. He wondered if they'd be shocked to know that that was Leon actually being 'friendly'.
And that was certainly enough from their resident sour-a**. So, the beam of sunshine that he was, Jake stepped in. "Hey, that'd be fun. Let's do it some time. I could use another training partner. Not that Leon here isn't good enough but he's more than happy to train by himself." And then it hit him. Oh the trouble he could cause. "Maybe our techs could get some training time in to, you think?"
Leon nearly choked on his drink. What!? Eyes firing daggers at Jake, the young man very nearly snarled. "No offense but I prefer to work alone."
"Nonsense. You've got to learn how to work with some of the other Techs sometime don't you? We won't always be doing missions by ourselves. Just think of it as more training." Jake lounged back in his chair feeling slightly mischievious. He'd pay for this later, he knew Leon would be sure to think of something, but for now it was incredibly entertaining to watch him squirm.
Finding very little he could say at the moment, Leon merely downcast his eyes to glare at the table. He didn't want to be saddled down with any more people. They just got in the way and needed guiding. He didn't have time for that, not if he was going to follow his own path to the top.
