I remember my brothers talking about this a long time ago. I think the way it works is: Matoran and Toa are capable of eating organic foods, but their masks give them an ability where they can harness energy from their surrounding area which makes eating optional. That's why Matoran shut down after their masks get knocked off. It's their energy supply.

i read on biosector01.com that skakdi are the only ones who actually eat their food,and most other races think that vile,because they had long since stopped eating
