Uhh for some reason I added 3 to 4 people and on the main multiplayer page it says total friends:0 question could someone like I don't check their friend requests in the game or something

Thats not how it works yet. Its still the tradeing FCs crap. So basically the reason why you have 0 friends after registering 4 friends is because those four friends have yet to register you. So you'd have to PM/talk to those four friends and tell them that they need to register your FC.
Only when that happens will you have 4 friends total.

Actually, through my experience with FC codes, its not really the codes that are stupid (though they are long and difficult to remember) it's actually human errors that make the FCs seem stupid.
On the DS, for example, if you have a game like pokemon pearl and you played with your friends for awhile and then you went in to get a DSi to replace your old DS, unless you have transfered the information you now have a new FC on that game, though your save files have not changed. Which can cause error if you have un-updated FC reference sheets on your computer.
