Yugioh has sadly dropped popularity wise, and the only people who are still paying attention are hardcore gamers, hardcore yaoi fans [xDD] and those that are interested in the fact that people now play CARD GAMES ON MOTORCYCLES.
If that doesn't peak your curiosity, I really don't know what's happened to you. They even make cars change lanes so that two people can duel in that lane especially. No kidding.
Obviously Domino City is not suffering from the deficit like the rest of the world does. But obviously, fantasy anime worlds never have very realistic problems.
5D seems to have gone back to the original YGO a little, friendship forever, crazily serious characters, a few minor characters for laughs, and a whole bunch of bishounens. GX wasn't exactly serious enough for me.
The characters are sweet and memorable [and easily obsessed over], the themes of loyalty and friendship are all there, the fantasy dragons are there too [Crimson dragon], there are new villains with new backstories and...
There is a theme of social differences too. GASP!
As someone who loves YGO for its timeless themes and the fact that it DOESNT need a love story to be good, I think that my opinion is pretty solid when I say that YGO 5D is DEFINITELY something to check out. It's just too good not to. If you liked the original YGO, 5D definitely is a pretty well-done sequel.
Just google Yugioh 5D. Or youtube it. Subbs and everything; they're all up there.
