They hadn't left New York, but they sure as hell should have. After that little encounter with that journalist, it was probably a bad idea that Elissa was even out of the hotel room with Machk. But she had taken two weeks off; hide in the hotel room for a week and was starting to run out of food. And besides .. Machk was getting fussy, which wasn't something that happened .. ever.

But Elissa was weary of taking the young boy back outside. She couldn't carry him on her hip .. unless ..

They were walking down a semi-quiet strip of local shops. Machk held onto Elissa firmly; baseball cap covering his ears, jeans covering his tail, little sneakers covering his claws and a polo shirt with the collar popped .. covering most of his face. His paws remained hidden in either Elissa's hair or in between his chest and Elissa's. He didn't want anyone taking pictures and although Elissa felt bad hiding him like this, it was the only way until they got back home.

Kaydence, being who she was, was particularly fond of boy clothing. Boyfriend jeans, Cargo pants, basketball shorts; they were easier to maneuver around in then skirts or frilly dresses. Tank tops, T-shirts with witty sayings, and multilayered clothing looked cool and, excluding the multilayer fashion-style, were all easy to breath in and kept her from overheating. Sneakers were a must. Anything else would just get in the way of skateboarding.

That being said, she was still a female-- a teenage female, with a lot of money, at that. Daddy’s money, but money all the same. So it went, almost without saying, that Kaydence knew fashion and recognized an adorable and trendy outfit when she saw one. Even if she didn’t wear it herself.

And, being a teenager mother with a lot of (Daddy’s) money that knew of fashion meant her son was to be at the top of the fashion line at all times.

Thus, the beginning of her Saturday was spent compulsively tugging at the neck of her T-shirt, Dae Hyun wrapped in his blanket (The poor thing had to be roasting!), walking down the shop-lined-street.

It was time for new clothes.

It was on this stretch of local shops that Elissa was at most ease, yet still extremely worried. She was at ease, because it was semi secluded from the big part of New York, but she was worried because of all the attention, drama and media that had derived from the song children. Machk was one of them, and although he was well covered, Elissa also began to worry about him. It was hot out and he was bundled up completely.

There was no way he could go without the polo shirt, hat or shoes .. but maybe Elissa could find him a pair of shorts instead of those jeans. Yeah, that was probably the best bet. Either that or a cold bottle of water. Anything to cool the poor kid down.

But to start, she was going to buy Machk some shorts and this "trendy children" shop looked like the perfect spot.

Dae was not pleased with this situation he’d found himself in. Not only was his tail uncomfortably squished (along with his feathers! His feathers!) but he had also been quiet content to stay at home that morning before his mother-lady decided to drag him outside.

The DoasIsay woman had given him cheerios at his first cry in the morning. Because frankly, his human chauffer was too lazy to get up at that exact moment and feed him. So DoasIsay had to come and get him and feed him his glorious breakfast. Which was all good. And then- because of the heat, she let him play sailor in the tub. He went scuba diving, and swore he saw a rubber duck monster in the tub. He had even valiantly fought it off.

And all for what?

To be shoved in a hot, stuffy blanket, with his tail cramped, to go walking down the street, in the hot sun? No, no he wasn’t happy. Matter of fact, he was sending his mother a very nasty looking glare that she was pointedly ignoring. Lets just see who’d be ignoring who when someone’s trying to sleep night. Revenge is a terrible thing, Mother-lady, a terrible thing indeed!

Kaydence sighed, feeling her son’s odd orbs peering at her. If looks could kill, the baby would already have matricide on his hands. But, she’d some how managed to become accustomed to his attitude in the short time she’d been with him, and so was able to quickly write off his look as him being a troublesome brat and ignore it.

Instead, she pulled open the door to their first stop for the day and headed right over to the shorts. It wasn’t like Dae was easily hidden- even in cloths, his pale blue skin and hair made him stand out terrible- but at least some lighter wear might make him more comfortable.

A woman had entered the store only a second before Elissa had; the oddest bundle in her arms. Poor thing, must be dying of heat in that blanket. But what was Elissa to say? She had an odd bundle in her arms and he was probably dying of heat as well. Elissa really didn't want to bring Machk outside after all that media attention, but what else was she supposed to do?

As she looked through the clothing, she reminded herself over and over again of that one woman back home who thought that Machk was an African-American child. If anyone asked, that's what she'd tell them. His father is African and "the lucky child got his skin tone instead of my own". Yup, that was the plan and Elissa was sticking to it. The other part of the plan was to get in and get out as fast as humanly possible.

But Machk had another thing on his mind. He was staring at the bundle in the previously mentioned woman's arms. Back and forth between Elissa and the bundle, he looked. Eventually, when Elissa wasn't paying attention, Machk pulled on her shirt and grunted.

"What's wrong, Machk?"

All it took was a point to the bundle and Elissa noticed the boy had blue skin.

Was he .. a song child?

Kaydence hummed softly to herself, browsing through the shorts quickly. “Dae-Hyun, you’re getting new clothes, whether you like it or not.” The teenager spoke to the fussing child, who was currently trying to fold himself in such a manner he’d be able to escape her hold. “You need an outfit for the Circus, so I suggest you just behave yourself, otherwise this will take longer.”

He hated when she did that. Used that voice that said she could careless if he did something bad. Because even though she used that tone of voice- it always meant that if he did do something bad- he’d pay for it in some form or manner. Like when she used it on him when he’d chewed on his teething ring and it broke in his mouth and he had to suffers forever with something shoved in his mouth and a minty tasting thing.

That voice meant he wasn’t going to win, so he should just stop. He hated giving in, but it was better than whatever magic she could put on him.

Giving a displeased beat in response, Dae turned his head away from his mother and the rack of clothing she was looking at. If he was going to be subjected to listening to her, he could at least make it look like he wasn’t. OH, but what was this? Another furry thing and his chauffer were staring at him!

Why couldn’t people just leave him alone? He got that he had adoring fans, and that, yes, he was that great, but did they need to stare at him every time he was out? And why couldn’t there be more girls in this flocking mass? Geez!

Well, Machk did need shorts after all.

Elissa walked over to the rack of shorts and began looking through it; on the opposite end, considering Machk was very large for his age, she tried to find a pair of shorts that would fit him, but from the corner of her eye she continued to glance at the other boy. There was no way .. they had all met at that restaurant. But maybe, this one was new.

Now, she'd have to do the stupidest thing ever; the accidental bump. Normally, someone could just ask, but regarding the song children, no. She needed a closer look before being able to ask her if .. Dae-Hyun? she thought she heard her say, was a song child or not. And this would also give the other girl an opportunity to look at Machk. She'd know what to look for if her son was a song child as well. If not, she'd brush it off as an African baby .. right?

Shifting down the rack, Elissa turned to walk around the woman, but "accidentally" brushed against her, "Oh, my bad." She laughed, "Pretty crowded in here."

Please take the bait. Please!

Dae watched wryly as the Hairyone and his chauffer came closer to where he and his mother-lady were. What was this? They wanted to come closer? They better not want him to shake their hands or kiss their heads. He saw people doing that on the glowing box his mother was watching the day before. He just wasn’t into that. No, they could kiss the ground on his feet, but he would not be kissing their heads.

And he hadn’t yet mastered the art of holding those color thingys like Kaydence did. Not to mention he didn’t have his on him.

The teenager, for her part, had not noticed the moving pair until they had actually bumped into her, so lost in her own world as she was. Blinking out of her thoughts, she cocked her head to the side, looking at the woman before glancing around the store they were in.

“Oh, it’s okay,” She murmured, finally smiling. “I guess it is. Being a hot day and all, everyone’s probably looking for cooler clothes.”

Woah! He’d just been jostled like a toy and his mother-lady was just going to let the woman go? NO! Bad Kaydence! Bad-mother-lady! Fight back! Where’s you’re honor?! Don’t go down without a hit or hair tug! Had he not taught her anything!?

Elissa smiled. She took the bait, thank goodness. Looking at the boy in her arms, she grinned then looked back up at the mother, "Yeah, no doubt. My little one -" she stopped. Elissa couldn't tell the woman he was full of fur just yet; it seemed as though she hadn't even noticed Machk yet, "- seems to be sensitive to the heat." A weak laugh; close one.

But that's not what she was here for. She wanted to know about the woman's son. Why was he blue?! He had to be a song child; there's no other way to explain it, "Ah, and is this your child?" She looked at the bundle, "Sorry for bumping into you, little buddy." It was genuine, of course, but she still wanted to know what the situation was. If there were more .. maybe the media would either go crazy or calm down. Elissa prayed it'd calm down; this woman looked young and didn't need to get involved in the negative side of having a song child.

Machk simply looked from the boy, to his mother, then back to his own mother. He was one; Machk could tell. Every real human baby that was blue was usually a still born. Of course, Machk didn't know that, but Elissa did.

He grunted.

Oh boy ..

The teenage mother wanted nothing more than to go back to her shopping and leave the store. She hadn’t expected anyone to get so close to her, and it looked like this woman was intent on seeing Dae, for some reason. While the babe had gotten to know children like him, and she was certain this woman was just motherly-curious, she didn’t like the idea of exposing Dae any. It was by she always covered him when she left the house. Something seemed dangerous about him being caught the way he was.

So she pulled him closer to her, hoping to hide what little flesh of his could be seen. She didn’t like the situation, much. “Yeah, this is my boy, Dae-Hyun. He’s sensitive to heat, too. Is that your boy?” She motioned, with a nod of her head, to the child in the other woman’s arms. Maybe she could cause a distraction and run for it?

Oh, nice. Now Hairyones mother-lady was talking to him. First she stared, then she jostled, now she was going to chat his ear off? His tail jerked beneath the blanket, cramped and uncomfortable, but highly agitated. He was hot and unhappy. And he did not have the patience to deal with this situation. If Kaydence wasn’t going to take care of it, he’d have to.

“Chrome heart!” He shouted. Bugger off!

Kaydence’s eyes went wide in shock and panic. Oh s**t, oh s**t, oh s**t.

Initially, Elissa's heart began to race, but it slowed down when she realized that this .. was another one. There were more than the four she had known of? What the ********! Opening and closing her mouth like a fish, she couldn't find the right words, except, "Song child?"

A surprised grunt this time, Machk looked back and forth between his mother and the other two. He knew it! There was no way he could have been. He was BLUE and he wasn't like other babies; crying and pooping. Well, maybe he did cry and poop, but he spoke. Machk wanted to reach out and touch the boy; capture his scent so he could get a better feel for him. This was, of course, purely his bear instincts; they were creatures of sound and scent, not so much sight.

Elissa looked around to make sure that .. journalist was not around, or anyone else for that matter, "Did Dae-Hyun come from an orb by any chance?" She hoped that she had not heard of the journalist, but chances are she had. But if she had, then she would have seen Machk before, right? In the papers .. unless Elissa really had managed to dodge the majority of the pictures. She had been too terrified to leave the hotel room - and this included getting the local paper .. the New York Post.

Kaydence felt the cold fingers of panic slowly grip her as the other woman’s mouth opened and closed. Her eyes began to water, almost immediately, as if a single wrong word would cause the dam to break and the teenager would instantly burst into tears. When the woman in front of her finally gathered her wits enough to say something, the tri-color haired teenager, let out a shaky breath, and took another step backwards. She knew. She knew, she knew, she knew. “…no?” She squeaked, too soon, to high pitched, to obviously a lie to even fool someone into believing it was the truth.

Dae hated being grabbed at. Or stared at. Always had, and perhaps always would. Grabby thing, he likes to think, was the one who ruined it for everyone. So needless to say as this hairy child gave him the look like he was going to be grabbed at, he backed off immediately, clutching to Kaydence’s shirt with his tiny fists. “Crystal,” He whined, turning on the charm. Because, if he was a sweet enough kid, his mother-lady would get rid of this hairy person.

“Orb?” Kaydence squealed, unable to hide the obvious high pitch that came with her terrible lying skills. But it was too late to back down, and it a bit too important. She’d seen the news papers, she knew it was out there. She didn’t need her son being taken away from her, dissected like some frog in a 7th grade biology class. “Kids aren’t born fro--” She paused, taking a good look at the child the other woman had. He seemed…awfully familiar, and less human the more she looked. Was this one of them? Had she met this one at some point?

Best not to test her luck. “…from orbs. What are you smoking, lady?”

Elissa growled; she was playing dumb and Elissa really did not have any time for it. She debated walking away from the woman and just dropping it, but she couldn't. She couldn't because she knew this Dae was one of them. He had to be. What he said sounded like a song, what he looked like wasn't that of an average human baby. He had to be ..

Off in his own little world, Machk looked around. He had gotten tired of the other boy, as the other boy just seemed to be afraid. After dealing with Vitaliy's quivering the other week, he had learned to brush off the fear .. when really, he could smell it and wanted it. If it feared him, he knew he won, but his gentle side forbade him to think like that.

Rolling her eyes, Elissa turned her body so that Machk was in between the wall rack and herself; the only other who could see Machk fully was this girl. Swiftly Elissa took off Machk's hat, exposing his ears for only a moment, "Look familiar now?" And she placed the hat back on his head as if nothing had happened.
PostPosted: Wed Aug 19, 2009 4:03 pm

Kaydence watched as the other woman twisted her body then removed the cap, her eyes going wide. That was why the child looked so familiar. If so, what the hell was this mother doing outside with her kid? Her and Dae would be locked up in her apartment so fast, it wouldn’t even be funny. Abby would do the grocery shopping and Sarah would bring them clothes. Or maybe they would move to some unpopulated place. Like Alaska. She wondered how logical it would be to shove both other women in a suitcase.

Her eyes narrowed a bit as the cap was placed back on his head. “What are you doing outside?” She hissed, half shocked, half alarmed, her eyes darting around the store. “Arent you afraid he’ll be taken away?!” Herself and Dae had yet to be seen by the press and she planned on keeping that way.

She was afraid, being with this woman. Not only did she have Dae, but she also knew Caspian and Ivy. And Asher! Orb-Asher who wasn’t even born yet. Wasn’t this woman a danger to them all? She was fairly certain she was, even if she had no idea who the others were.

Dae’s tail flickered at the ignorance. He wasn’t supposed to be stared at, but he wasn’t supposed to be ignored, either. Ooohh, this boy was asking for it.

Elissa looked around the store and shushed the woman; hissing in a low voice, "We're f-" she caught her own tongue, "We're stuck here for another few days. I'm not even from the states, I'm from across the country in the other country." She wasn't going to specify. Not after what had just happened. If that reporter and his crew were kicking around .. and they heard that .. Elissa would definitely have to move out of the continent.

"Machk was getting hot. He's used to cooler weather in the mountains." Of course, at this moment they were experiencing a heat wave, but prior to, B.C. had been have some fairly dreary weather. Quite depressing, actually, but Machk seemed to enjoy it and Elissa was feigning for it.

"We've been locked in our hotel room since the incident nearly two weeks ago."

Machk cocked his head at the two. He didn't seem worried, no. In fact, he was quite content with how things were right now. He felt safe, but feeling Elissa's raging heart beat was starting to worry him. What was wrong? She'd better not be thinking about him again ..
