Sometimes, we have questions about the language, but don't know enough to understand an answer in Japanese. Need a more in-depth explanation to something than a straight translation? Ask away!
This would be a good place for cultural questions, as well.

vampire gabrile: I dunno what your OS is and what version it is, but perhaps this will help if you're running windows:: here if not, then I have no idea and would suggest hitting the technology assistance forum or google =3 At OP@ I dunno if this is appropriate for here or not... but I'm really confused as to when I would use nana vs shichi, yon vs shi, ku vs kyuu... actually, numbers in general confuse me (other than knowing its a system of 10s ...) but like when to use which version of the numbers, and the counters... they confozzle my poor little brain XD

Haha, when I explain one of the big reasons why Japanese is hard, I bring up counters. You should see the beautiful way in which people's eyes glaze over.
The unfortunate thing is that really, the short answer is to just memorize it.
The long answer is this: to some extent, when to use shichi vs. nana, yon vs. shi etc. has to do with the kanji for those numbers: one is the kun-yomi and the other is the on-yomi. For example, nana and yon are most often used when they are by themselves.
Also, bear in mind that when it comes to things like time or months, they generally don't like long vowels or an n to come before the counter. Instead of yonji for 4 o'clock, it's yoji. Instead of yongatsu for April, it's shigatsu.
Even I still have problems sometimes remembering how to say certain numbers with certain counters.
The good news is that there are relatively few counters that you really honestly need to know.
The ones I would recommend studying and just plain memorizing how they work include: Time, days of the month (esp. the first 10 days), floors of a building, numbers of people, and the general counter (for any time you don't know what counter you should use).
Honestly, it is pretty arbitrary. But I hope some of what I said might be helpful. Let me know if you have more questions. ^_^

I suddenly feel small and helpless XD
so, what it boils down to is, the counter I'm using determines which version of the number I'm going to use?

~Ichigo_Pie~ @_@ burning_eyes I suddenly feel small and helpless XD so, what it boils down to is, the counter I'm using determines which version of the number I'm going to use? sweatdrop Sorry about that. Yes, pretty much. I can type up the most common counters for you and the numbers used with them, if you'd like and think that would help.

Is the cursor actually in something that allows you type text, like a text box or a document? If you don't have a cursor in something that allows you to type text, it will do that.
BTW, I'm trying to type up a counters doc for you guys.... It's sort of become second nature to me, so it's actually kind of hard to sit down and really think about it. sweatdrop

Why can Japanese cartoons/ anime show female nudity, and we dare show show even panties in American cartoons? This peeves me more than anything, forgive me if it is misplaced.
