my teacher actually joked about this last year.
my social studies class was "the smart class without common sense."
personally, i believe it to be possible for smart people to lack common sense,
but you can definintely have both.

Speaking as a "smart" person,
We spend so much time studying the facts and numbers about life that we don't live the life, thus the appearance at the lack of common sense. We look at the details rather than the obvious, search for the meaning to the question rather than the answer.
It's possible to have both, but you will more often find that a smart person, does indeed lack common sense.
