It is a great for some people, bad for others. I have a lot of friends and family who joined, most of them said it was a great experience, aside from the stress and internal politics and the government jerking them around while they were in and after they left. A couple though couldn't handle it. I would never join. I know the first time someone yelled at me for not doing enough push ups I would yell back and get into a lot of trouble. Plus the stress, internal politics, and governmental jerking.

My father is in the military. It's great if you want money, benefits and if you don't have a family. Otherwise, the moving is a pain, the TDYs are harsh. three months away from the most precious thing in your life? no thanks. I support the families with military personel. I know their struggle, and I hope for the best for them.

I don't mean to insult anyone but personally I think that anything which is associated with going to war is a waste of time. I know there are other things that the navy and other organisations do but the primary reason they were "invented" in the first place is to go to war or "to protect" the country. I understand that some people totally love it, and love to live their lives that way..which is fine..go for it...what I find irritating is when people join the army or whatever believing that they can really make a difference for the country..that they are serving an honourable deed.....I think if you honestly think that you're naieve...join the police force or something if that's what you want to do. If you join the army or military etc for some other reason..just because you feel strongly that it's what you want to do..then fine.
What irritates me more than anything, is when the families speak on TV when their sons or daughters have died in the service and start blaming the government for the war etc etc.....if you join the army that's what happens..I'm sure every soldier out there knows the risks and is prepared to die and I know it must be absolutely horrible to lose your son or daughter but they've gone to war..it's what they do..it's their job...you don't join the military just to look good in a uniform and play on assault courses...
