Free online games generally aren't that great.. out of them all, I would recommend Guild Wars. You'd have to pay for the game itself, but it doesn't require a monthly subscription.

There are also several decent MMOs that are free to play, but all the flavor of the game is hidden away unless you pay for it (additional benefits like armor/weapons, items, etc.) - Labyrinthine Psyche
