I was watching the news the other day and apparently Utah is debating on changing the Sex Ed classes from abstinence only (with little or no mention of contraception or STDS) to giving parents an option for either abstinence only or a sex ed class that discusses contraception and STDS.

Now when I had sex ed the teacher discussed both sides; telling us about contraception and STDS while making it clear the only way to prevent them 100% was through abstinence.

Has anyone here had an abstinence only sex ed class? How informative was it? I guess I'm just confused as to how it can be effective.

My Health class from 8th grade was extremely different.
If I ever met my Health teacher again I'd thank her.
She did of course talk about abstinence but not in
great detail because as she said 'the best way to not
get pregnant or get an STD is to just not have sex.'
She was extremely informative but not preachy.
She mentioned STD's how their transmitted how to prevent getting one
& treatments/clinics in case anyone already had them.
She talked about condoms, different brands and their effectiveness
& different kinds of birth control, their effectiveness & the possible side effects.
She even made lists of clinics, with their contact info & handed them out.

I wish I'd had a teacher like yours, loves. Around here, the mere mention of condoms or contraceptives is like taboo or something. It's all about abstinence. Which in my opinion is highly unrealistic these days. I mean, nine out of ten teenagers will have sex before they're even seventeen;so I think it's much more productive to stop trying to drill into their heads that they shouldn't have sex and instead educate them about the consequences of unprotected sex and teach them that it's not something to fool around with, which is basically what my mom told me. Very helpful, that. 3nodding

I agree Lilith. The way I see it is teenagers should be given this information not only to educate them about the consequences of unprotected sex but also so they are prepared for sex when they get married. It's been my experience that most parents wont talk to their kids about sex other than to tell them not to do it till they are married. I can only imagine how uncomfortable a marriage night would be if I was a virgin and didn't know anything about sex xp
