>.< Old Old book, I thought it's name was A Light in the Dark but that didn't bring anything up search wise. It was about a boy (I think?! that bit was never very clear) with some sort of mental disorder, told from a first person point of view. It starts with a Halloween, his mother is a hooker or at the very least a slut and then progresses as he's taken out of school, sent to live with distant family, his eventual brief relationship with a girl (hense I think the main character is a boy), then his eventual adoption into another family. At some point in the book he describes not being able to hear things, like being under water and everything is told in a very detached sort of way then toward the end the "water finally flows out of his ears" (it's described in some weird way like that) and he can hear again. He starts banging on the table he's sitting at in joy, to hear the thuds and the echoes and his new adopted parents share a sad look.
By the end of the book it becomes clear that he was sent to live in a mental asylum and he spends his days riding a bike around and around and around the yard.
It was VERY strange, but I'd like to reread it to see if my first impression was right.
