I was wondering what everyone's motivation for learning Japanese is. I've heard reasons ranging from "I want to be able to watch/read anime/manga in the original Japanese, 'cause translations suck" to "I want to go into business" to "I'm fascinated by the culture".
I started wanting to learn because I read manga and watched anime, and got really interested in the culture. I think language is a key part of culture, so I wanted to learn Japanese, to learn all I could about the culture, because I just fell in love with it.
What is your reason?

Basically the same reason you want, i am Filipino, and i wanna kept to my asian culture, and i just wanna learn japanese cause its cool biggrin

Originally, it was just because of anime, manga, and video games. But once I really started listening to the language and learning more about it, I fell in love with it. I'm honestly not even so much into the culture, I'm actually more interested in the nuts and bolts of the language.
As a result, I want to become a translator. I love that it's challenging because English and Japanese are such completely different languages. And if I can tie in my first interests with manga, anime, and/or video games, all the better. mrgreen

I like to use language to understand culture, and culture to understand language.

There are a lot of Japanese exchange students at my school, but I'm like, crazy shy and don't really talk to people anyways, so I'd have to find a way to befriend one of them...... There are a lot of places you can start studying, if you want to. Look in the Learning Tools topic. The sites I recommended are sites I use, and I think the others are worth checking out. But I'm also kind of rusty, seeing as I just finished summer classes, and haven't taken a formal class in over a year. Do your best!!! And good luck.

I chose to learn Japanese because I have friends in Japan, and I want to communicate with them in their native language.
Also, the language, the food, yadda yadda, but none of that was enough to make me change my major for it.

I love foreign languages, and Japanese was the first I happened to learn. I've studied a couple others now and Japanese is still my favorite. The culture, both traditional and modern, fascinate me, as well as certain aspects of pop culture.
I ended up as a Japanese major because when I thought about it, there was nothing else I could really make a living at and enjoy. My other hobby happens to be writing, and well, you know how English or lit majors are sweatdrop
