This is a semi-successful RP on another forum, so I thought I'd bring it over to Gaia which is all about RPs and see how it goes.

Setting: Imagine if you took everything that goes on at Furinkan High (Ranma 1/2) and Ouran Academy (Ouran High School Host Club), and added in furries. The setting is a lot like that.

Story: Nobody pays attention to the Black Magic Club. That's why nobody noticed them studying ancient forbidden texts. And, really, who would have cared if they had? If they don't want to make some money by selling them to archaeologists, whose job that is, that's their business. The only reason anyone would have bothered would have been to steal them.

So the research was undisturbed. They had found something here, you see. The text spoke of the gods of myth, Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Hindu, and all the others. According to these, the gods were real. Different gods went in different roles before different peoples by different names, but they were real, and though they were gone, their power was not. And there, writ in ancient hand, was a way to harness that power.

Naturally, the Black Magic Club wanted that power. The spell here promised to infuse their very bodies with it. However, they couldn't very well just use the spell on themselves, as they had no way of knowing what would happen. So they resolved to test it on someone else first. It might take everything they had, bribes, blackmail, even brute force, usually a last resort for a bunch of guys who hang out in the dark, to get enough subjects to observe. And, indeed, it did take all that and more, but finally they were ready. When the spell was cast, the victims fell into a catatonic state similar to suspended animation. Hours later, a few of them began to wake up...

Characters:

Avatar:
Each player character is an incubating god, called an Avatar. Although they retain their memories and personality, their names have been replaced, due to the power that is in names. If you were to point out the Avatar of Persephone and ask anyone who knows her who she is, they'd tell you she's Persephone, even if her name was Margaret before the ritual and they had no way of knowing about it. Even the Avatars themselves don't know their former names.
Power:
Each Avatar has one godly power. They're as much a curse as a blessing. The more you use a power, the harder it is to use; the less you use it, the harder it is to control. In extreme circumstances - including life-threatening danger and not using the power for too long - an Avatar may enter God Mode, in which their mind is temporarily warped and they believe themselves to really be the god of which they are an Avatar, complete with gaining appropriate memories and personality. This is accompanied by a fuller array of divine powers and a minor transformation.
Species
Gender
Age
Year: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior. All of the subjects were students at Yggdra Academy.
Group: Club, team, social circle, whatever.
Appearance/Personality/Background/Other: As much as you want to put, I'd like at least a description.

Example Character/GMPC

Avatar: Loki
Power: Shapeshifting
Species: Originally a squirrel, however now able to become most any species, probably
Gender: Male, usually
Age:15
Year: Sophomore
Group: Black Magic Club, now avoiding the other members; thinking of leaving and starting a rival club
Appearance: Somewhat puny for his age. In his normal form, he has red fur.
Personality: Sometimes a bit timid, but always eager when it comes to pursuing what he wants, or as Daffy Duck put it: "I may be a craven little coward, but I'm a greedy craven little coward!". (In fact, you might think of his whole personality as a less-goofy, more-sane Daffy.) The fact that he usually does the right thing in the end is somewhat mitigated by the fact that "in the end" is sometimes after he has done the very, very wrong thing. For instance...
Background: As a member of the Black Magic Club, he helped to round up the subjects. Each member of the club would get to select their deity when they cast the spell on themselves. He would have picked Ratatosk. However, he had a last-minute change of heart and tried to stop the casting of the spell... so they chose for him.

As long as it's one of your deity's primary characteristics. Many deities possessed at least limited ability to transform, but it wouldn't make sense for, say, Zeus's avatar to do that instead of throwing lightning.
