I don't know how many people know this but there's a live action movie in the works for Avatar: The last airbender. There's a thread in Extended Discussion that's become pretty big and is debating the casting choices for the movie.

I recently also discovered that another anime I like, Full Metal Panic, is going to have a live action movie as well. Honestly, I feel a little uneasy about it all. There are several other anime franchises lined up to get a Hollywood treatment, and with their track record with things like Speed Racer and Dragonball, also the recent Chun Li Street Fighter movie, things don't look good in my opinion.

What I want to know is what others think about Hollywood translating these anime into live action. Why hasn't it been consistently successful? I suppose success can be subjective, but in this case, success isn't box office profits. Success to me is all about the substance, the quality of the finished product in relation to the original source.

Opinions?

Oi... don't lump Speed Racer in with that Dragonball crap.

And anime based movies are inconsistent for the same reason that not all movies are generally good. Different screenwriters, different directors... Hell, directing can make or break a movie. Just look at Half Blood Prince.

As for the Avatar movie, it has several things going for it. For one, the little basketball headed kid they got to play Aang is an actual martial artist... He isn't bald for the part, but rather keeps his head shaved so he will stay cool while practicing his tae kwon do.

I'll wait to see how it is before I pass judgement on it. Who knows? Perhaps it will be really good.

Oi, yes lump Speed Racer in with that Dragonball crap! They utterly destroyed what Speed Racer was to make that craptacular movie with the same name! I mean seriously there was so much that was changed from the anime to the movie it's not even funny! We won't even speak about Dragonball that is just laugh or cry-able depending on if you're a fan or not....

I fear for the other anime based movies that are to come out because it seems that Hollywood has taken to the idea of taking a classic or good anime and "Making it better" or "Updating" it for the kids now days. All they do when they do that, in my opinion, is ruin a perfectly good show. I think that is one of the reasons anime based movies tend to be crap when Hollywood makes them into live action movies. They try and make them "better" then they were and in truth they just ruin them.

As for Avatar: The Last Airbender, I don't have as much of a fear of this one turning out like Speed Racer or Dragonball simply for the fact that Avatar: The Last Airbender is actually an American made animation. It is also a bit newer compared to the previous ones done, so I give it a better chance of turning out well compared to others. However, only time will tell if I am right or they ruin it too.

I will have to admit that I haven't really watched the Speed Racer anime, so that probably accounts for why I have no issues with the super techno-coloured movie they made of it. I've been meaning to correct this, but I've no computer at the moment and no job. So.. yeah.

The Last Airbender is made of fail. I did much reading on the subject, and the entire fiasco has made my heart sad. I suggest you look at Racebending.com and find out more.

I checked out that site you had a link to and read a lot of it and watched almost all of the video clips. Okay, now that I know M. Night Shyamalan is like directing it apparently I'm a bit worried for the movie.

Yes, I'll admit I think their should be like a Tibetan person playing Aang but at least the kid looks close to what Aang the cartoon looks like. Okay Katara and Sokka should both have tanned skin and probably be Inuit but at least Sokka has a bit more resemblance to his character then the girl does. Zuko is pretty darn close in resembling his character then the others but still the others aren't that bad though it could have been better.

I have no issue with the cast themselves. The kid who is playing Aang is is actually pretty impressive, and I think the girl playing Katara is pretty. I mainly have issues with how they went about casting them, and the fact that they're replacing the nice Chinese characters with some made up bit. I don't approve of the whitewashing.
