So, a few of us have brought up the Book of Five Rings on occasion but, not all of us, I gather, have read it. In the process of browsing around for some information I'll be using later on I found a page that spoke about the 9 Principles stated in Musashi's book. For those of you who have not read it, I suggest you do, it's a wonderful piece that should be top priority for anyone seeking to enrich their understanding of the Way. For those of us who have read it, this is just a little reminder, a refreshment course if you will! Anyone interested in reading the full KenpoKarate.com article can click here. It should be noted that everyone, regardless of discipline; in this article, the author has applied the nine principles to Kenpo, but this isn't strictly for Kenpoists!

1. Do not think dishonestly
2. The Way is in training
3. Become acquainted with every art
4. Know the Ways of all professions
5. Distinguish between gain and loss in worldly matters
6. Develop intuitive judgment and understanding of everything
7. Perceive those things which cannot be seen
8. Pay attention even to trifles
9. Do nothing which is of no use

LOL, I know how that goes...I've got 4 different books I'm in the middle of reading and haven't come close to finishing a single one...I don't know that it's so much that I'm lazy, I just don't have too much time for reading anymore...In fact, I haven't been on here as much lately either. cry

I think my problem is that I'm a procrastinator and if I don't have a deadline to meet, and there aren't severe consequences if I don't meet my goal, I don't have the motivation to finish.

For example, my Anthropology Prof was notorious for assigning multiple reading materials, none of which were 'easy reads'. I started reading Thoreau's Walden 3 days before it was due...everyone else had been reading it for 3 weeks and hadn't finished yet. But alas, the fire was set under my butt so to speak and it got me into gear. Got the book finished 1 hour before class! Did I learn my lesson...no...I procrastinated on every other book he'd assigned as well.

I've only read parts of it online, and they're the most important ones. Yes, I agree, laziness will kill one day, but I highly recommend this book to anyone and I plan on getting this book for my 16th b-day.

I found that it's one of those books that you read, and right away you don't get it all, but it eventually sinks in little by little, and periodically you can go back and re read it and understand a little more. It's a very significant piece of work though.

True... you can't really jump in and think you'll understand the concept of emptiness or nothingness just like that... for some people it might even take years.

It's true, sometimes I'll read or even hear an instructor talk about a concept I'm not familiar with and I don't really forget it, but don't necessarily utilize what they've said because it doesn't really get through. Then, one day, often times weeks down the road, something will click and suddenly it becomes entirely clear. Sometimes you just have to sleep on it for a while!

Sleep on it... or sometimes, simply grow... in life and/or the arts ^_^

Sometimes, even our actions help us go like "ohhh" =3
