~In my class you will learn many, many things. Some of you may find the things you learn here extremely useful while others will never see any use for the material after exams. I sincerely hope none of you ever need to use the knowledge you obtain here.

~We will cover the types of dark and offensive magic and how to defend oneself against them. This means you will learn defensive spells as well as counter-spells, counter-jinxes, counter-curses, and the like. We will also study the dark creatures of our world who possess an aggressive nature and how to deal with each should you encounter one.

~Further more, we shall discuss past cases where "Defense Against Dark Arts" was necessary as well as tactics used in these battles.

~Elder years will take on more practical lessons and learn defense in dealing with more severe dark magic such as the Forbidden Curses. There will also be introductory work in actively fighting dark arts rather than simply defending against it.

~Fifth years will be briefly exposed to beginner's healing and enhancing magic as this is considered important by myself, the current professor, and Headmaster McGonagall.

~Fifth years should prepare for O.W.L.s if they would like to advance to N.E.W.T. level D.A.D.A.

~N.E.W.T. level students will focus on actively dueling the dark arts in more dire situations and strenuous exercises. Sixth years will begin studying non-verbal defensive spells. Seventh years considering a career in D.A.D.A. should obtain the optional text listed above.

~Please remember to bring plenty of parchment and ink along with a functional quill to each class. The course will consist of lecture lessons as well as practical lessons. You need to bring your wand to practical lessons only, which will be announced ahead of time along with their location.

~We may have a guest lecturer ever so often. Students usually behave well during Mr. Potter's visits. I implore you to continue this practice.

~Punctuality is of high importance, as is completion of homework and class participation. House points will be deducted for offenses at the professor's discretion.
