 name :: Remy nicknames :: Rem stage :: Birth
mutation :: song song :: "Belle" : Beauty and the Beast guardian :: Jack Calico strengths :: voice mimicry, beauty, love of literature weaknesses :: self-doubt, isolation
preferences likes :: books, pretending dislikes :: being bored
about to come
:: attributes :: People call him beautiful, but not in a conventional way. Remy's skin is pale from all the time he spends inside and his brown hair is cut short and feathered like a dream. His eyes are often glued to the inside of a book, but on the occasion that he looks up, one can see that they are a delightfully warm shade of hazel, with a small brown spot underneath his left eye. More often than not, Remy is smiling shyly, usually about something he's read or something he's thinking about that's funny.
Above all, Remy enjoys pretending that he's someone else and somewhere else. Mimicking others' voices and affectations comes naturally to him, and he is keenly perceptive of a person's unique traits. He's also proficient with learning other languages, though French is his favorite and comes most naturally to him. While he enjoys learning, if he's already familiar with a subject or it fails to interest him, his mind will wander to other topics, giving him a distracted and not-really-there expression.
Remy is very creative, but can also let his imagination take too much control of his life. Sometimes, he imagines that monsters are in his room or that someone's watching him when no one is. When playing, he tends to get very attached to his toys or other items, even feeling sad about giving them away or not using them so much. He stunned Jack by crying when he threw out a pair of his old, ratty socks, and since then his guardian has had to be extra careful to either respect his wishes with his things or just throw the really old, disgusting stuff out when he's not looking.
He's more comfortable being alone than being with others, but when fantasy runs away with him, sometimes contact with reality through his friends and family is the only way to assuage his fears or bring him back to the present. He also gets a little teased for his dazed and dreamy looks. He begins to find more and more that he wants someone to understand him, but that this is difficult given his predilection to go off by himself a good deal of the time. For this reason, he creates his own stories and characters, people he can surround himself with when he's alone. He likes cracking jokes and can be pretty funny, but his humor can also be a little strange and occasionally nonsensical, as it often stems from texts centuries older than he is. Archaic words like "Holloa!" tend to creep into his vocabulary more than normal, making his speech an odd combination of 21st slang and 19th century France.

 :: link to song :: ["Belle"] :: history :: The songs for Beauty and the Beast were the last works of Howard Ashman, the lyricist for the film. Ashman, who had also done the lyrics The Little Mermaid, Aladinn, and Little Shop of Horrors, died of AIDS at age 40 before Beauty and the Beast was released and the film was dedicated in his honor. Ashman colloborated with long-time friend and composer Alan Menken on this piece. Both Ashman and Menken won Academy Awards on their own, and Beauty and the Beast remains the only animated film to have been nominated for the Award for Best Picture. It was the first animated film to win the Golden Globe for Best Picture, though.
"Belle" was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song, although it did not win ("Beauty and the Beast" did). It is sung by the actress who plays Belle, Paige O' Hara, a noted Broadway actress and singer. She reprised her role for both sequels of the film, and even voices her character in the popular video game series, Kingdom Hearts. She currently lives in Nevada, where she enjoys a quiet life with her husband.
:: lyrics :: {verse i}
[Belle:] Little town It's a quiet village Ev'ry day Like the one before Little town Full of little people Waking up to say:
[Townsfolk:] Bonjour! Bonjour! Bonjour! Bonjour! Bonjour!
[Belle:] There goes the baker with his tray, like always The same old bread and rolls to sell Ev'ry morning just the same Since the morning that we came To this poor provincial town [Baker:] Good Morning, Belle! [Belle:] 'Morning, Monsieur. [Baker:] Where are you off to? [Belle:] The bookshop. I just finished the most wonderful story about a beanstalk and an ogre and a - [Baker:] That's nice. Marie! The baguettes! Hurry up!
[Townsfolk:] Look there she goes that girl is strange, no question Dazed and distracted, can't you tell? Never part of any crowd 'Cause her head's up on some cloud No denying she's a funny girl that Belle
[Man I:] Bonjour [Woman I:] Good day [Man I:] How is your fam'ly?
[Woman II:] Bonjour [Man II:] Good day [Woman II:] How is your wife?
[Woman III:] I need six eggs [Man III:] That's too expensive
[Belle:] There must be more than this provincial life
[Bookseller:] Ah, Belle. [Belle:] Good Morning. I've come to return the book I borrowed. [Bookseller:] Finished already? [Belle:] Oh, I couldn't put it down. Have you got anything new? [Bookseller:] Ha Ha! Not since yesterday. [Belle:] That's all right. I'll borrow . . . . . this one! [Bookseller:] That one? But you've read it twice! [Belle:] Well, it's my favorite! Far off places, daring swordfights, magic spells, a prince in disguise - [Bookseller:] If you like it all that much, it's yours! [Belle:] But sir! [Bookseller:] I insist. [Belle:] Well, thank you. Thank you very much!
{verse ii}
[Townsfolk:] Look there she goes that girl is so peculiar I wonder if she's feeling well With a dreamy far-off look And her nose stuck in a book What a puzzle to the rest of us is Belle
[Belle:] Oh, isn't this amazing? It's my fav'rite part because you'll see Here's where she meets Prince Charming But she won't discover that it's him 'til chapter three
[Woman:] Now it's no wonder that her name means "beauty" Her looks have got no parallel [Shopkeeper:] But behind that fair facade I'm afraid she's rather odd Very diff'rent from the rest of us [Townsfolk:] She's nothing like the rest of us Yes, diff'rent from the rest of us is Belle
[LeFou:] Wow! You didn't miss a shot, Gaston! You're the greatest hunter in the whole world! [Gaston:] I know. [LeFou:] No beast alive stands a chance against you. Ha ha ha! And no girl, for that matter. [Gaston:] It's true, LeFou. And I've got my sights set on that one. [LeFou:] Hm! The inventor's daughter? [Gaston:] She's the one - the lucky girl I'm going to marry. [LeFou:] But she's - [Gaston:] The most beautiful girl in town. [LeFou:] I know, but - [Gaston:] That makes her the best. And don't I deserve the best? [LeFou:] Well, of course! I mean you do, but -
[Gaston:] Right from the moment when I met her, saw her I said she's gorgeous and I fell Here in town there's only she Who is beautiful as me So I'm making plans to woo and marry Belle
[Bimbettes:] Look there he goes Isn't he dreamy? Monsieur Gaston Oh he's so cute Be still my heart I'm hardly breathing He's such a tall, dark, strong and handsome brute
{verse iii}
[Man I:] Bonjour! [Gaston:] Pardon [Man II:] Good day [Man III:] Mais oui! [Matron:] You call this bacon? [Woman I:] What lovely grapes! [Man IV:] Some cheese [Woman II:] Ten yards [Man IV:] one pound [Gaston:] 'scuse me! [Cheese merchant:] I'll get the knife [Gaston:] Please let me through! [Woman I:] This bread - [Man V:] Those fish - [Woman I:] it's stale! [Man V:] they smell! [Baker:] Madame's mistaken.
[Belle:] There must be more than this provincial life! [Gaston:] Just watch, I'm going to make Belle my wife!
[Townsfolk:] Look there she goes a girl who's strange but special A most peculiar mad'moiselle It's a pity and a sin She doesn't quite fit in 'Cause she really is a funny girl A beauty but a funny girl She really is a funny girl That Belle
[Belle:] Is he gone? Can you imagine? He asked me to marry him. Me, the wife of that boorish, brainless . . .
"Madame Gaston!" Can't you just see it? "Madame Gaston!" His "little wife" No sir! Not me! I guarantee it I want much more than this provincial life I want adventure in the great wide somewhere I want it more than I can tell And for once it might be grand To have someone understand I want so much more than they've got planned
:: lyrics analysis ::
Verse i: [Baker:] Good Morning, Belle! [Belle:] 'Morning, Monsieur. [Baker:] Where are you off to? [Belle:] The bookshop. I just finished the most wonderful story about a beanstalk and an ogre and a - [Baker:] That's nice. Marie! The baguettes! Hurry up!
Remy loves to read and has a voracious appetite for books. His voice is pretty high, and his luscious hair and deep brown eyes often lead to him being confused as a girl. Remy doesn't mind it too much, since most other boys he know are expected to hunt or go out and conquer the great outdoors. Instead, he prefers to be by himself, reading, thinking, or playing with his toys, most of which are small plastic people whom he has run cafes and time travel. While he does on occasion correct people for confusing his gender, he also has a bit of a fun streak and enjoys not telling them the truth until Jack comes along and clarifies for them.
However, girl or not, Remy wants to share his books and the fantastic worlds they contain this others. He's used to people not having time for him or not being interested, so he takes their rejection in stride and more often than not gets another book. Compassionate, he does understand that people have important jobs to do, but he still wishes that they would make time for him. His imagination runs wild at this stage, creating vivid worlds for him to play in, new characters for him to be friends with, and new adventures to embark on. He's quite a handful when he's not reading, always wanting to explore, and Jack has to keep a keen eye on him.
verse i, continued] [Bookseller:] That one? But you've read it twice! [Belle:] Well, it's my favorite! Far off places, daring swordfights, magic spells, a prince in disguise - [Bookseller:] If you like it all that much, it's yours! [Belle:] But sir! [Bookseller:] I insist. [Belle:] Well, thank you. Thank you very much!
Remy sometimes finds himself obsessing a little too much about fantasy, even trying to fashion himself a wand out of an old twig, and spending hours in the library with Jack, picking out just the right books to bring home with him. Remy is also very polite and kind, always smiling and trying to make others happy. Though, apart from his wild imagination, it seems as though his only refuge is in books...
verse ii:
I mean you do, but -
As an adolescent, Remy has grown tired of people being so confused about whether he's a girl or not. In various acts of rebellion, he tries to do things differently than he did in his childhood, including growing his hair longer, not talking to people as much, and keeping more to himself. Unfortunately for Remy, these steps don't always have the desired effect. He still seems unable to fit in, no matter how many books on self-improvement he reads, and people still gossip about "that cute girl of Mr. Calico's." His looks, instead of turning more masculine, only seem to have softened and lengthened around the edges, giving him more the appearance of a young woman or a very tall child at the very best.
Frustrated, Remy dives more and more into books, secluding himself from others and in turn unintentionally arousing curiosity from his neighbors. Those who thought Remy was a boy are now even more confused, and those who have never met him are convinced that he is the most beautiful girl they have ever met. While he affects a quiet and brooding nature to keep people away, more often than not his pursuers interpret this as maidenly shyness and become more and more enamored of him, which infuriates him to no end.
It seems like, no matter where he goes or what he does, people are compelled never to see his true self: a bookworm and a wit, not just that pretty girl down the road.
verse iii:
[Belle:]I want much more than this provincial life I want adventure in the great wide somewhere I want it more than I can tell And for once it might be grand To have someone understand I want so much more than they've got planned
As an adult, Remy has finally got his things in order. While people still mistake him for a girl half the time, he's back to enjoying fooling them, and has gotten quite good at convincing people of that fact. While he was once terrified of someone proposing to him, he's had it happen a few times and he's learned to shrug it off gracefully. He's never let go of his daydreaming, and still can be found staring and smiling off into space.
His imagination has evolved from just creating a single story to many stories, so that he has a wide variety of characters popping in and out of his head. He loves language, its strangeness and its commonalities, and takes great delight in twisting words and using conversation to his advantage. He's found great joy in acting, whether he acts the part of a girl or a guy, he loves losing himself in his role and getting the audience to pay attention to him more. Instead of hiding from the spotlight, Remy has learned to embrace it both as a profession and as a way of life. If people want to gape at his extraordinarily good looks, he'll let them and will even throw in a wink for good measure. At last, he's learned to be comfortable being himself and has found a way to have tons of adventures in the world.
Chorus: "Belle" 's chorus is constantly changing. Though it has a basic structure of starting with "Look there she goes" and ending with "Belle," those are the only similarities. It is a reflection of how others perceive Remy, going from a strange kid to an strange outcast to well, a strange adult, but more friendly. The fact that "look there she goes" is repeated so often shows Remy's love for adventure and exploration, even when he's at his lows. That "Belle" is repeated at each stage shows just how Remy's feminine beauty never seems to fade.
chorus 1 [Townsfolk:] Look there she goes that girl is strange, no question Dazed and distracted, can't you tell? Never part of any crowd 'Cause her head's up on some cloud No denying she's a funny girl that Belle
Remy as a child is always getting carried away with his daydreams, so much that other people start to comment on it. He pretends he's somewhere else, not carrying if they call him pretty or a girl.
chorus 2] [Townsfolk:] Look there she goes that girl is so peculiar I wonder if she's feeling well With a dreamy far-off look And her nose stuck in a book What a puzzle to the rest of us is Belle
As he grows, Remy wonders more and more why people keep addressing him as a young lady. He doesn't like this very much and wants people to see him as who he really is, often faking sick not to have to go out and face them. He turns once more to books for refuge trying to find out what he should do.
chorus 3] [Bimbettes:] Look there he goes Isn't he dreamy? Monsieur Gaston Oh he's so cute Be still my heart I'm hardly breathing He's such a tall, dark, strong and handsome brute
Remy tries to be someone he's not, the epitome of what his books tell him a prince or a dashing hero is: tall, dark, strong, and handsome. But in trying to be someone else, even if he succeeds in convincing people that he's a man, he still finds that he's missing his old self...
finale] [Townsfolk:] Look there she goes a girl who's strange but special A most peculiar mad'moiselle It's a pity and a sin She doesn't quite fit in 'Cause she really is a funny girl A beauty but a funny girl She really is a funny girl That Belle
Remy is more confident in himself and doesn't care whether people see him as a girl or a man. Which is good, because his looks definitely lean toward the pretty girl category at this point. Remy quite enjoys flaunting his looks and surprising people who don't know who he truly is.

name :: Jack Calico, born Jonathan Callahan age :: 26 hair color :: orange eye color :: green/blue occupation :: apothecary by day, clothing designer and real estate mogul by night secret ambition :: piracy
history :: Jack Calico, born Jonathan Callahan, has had his own storied existence. Born to middle-class parents living in a small town, his fortunes have soared and tumbled throughout his life. His father was a glassblower with a penchant for gambling and his mother tried to be responsible and look out for him, but this was not always the case. Jack more than once found himself without tuition for the next year's classes, and his mother was forced to open shop as a seamstress and squirrel away money in order to keep her only son in school.
Gradually, the rift between his parents became too much to bear. His mother, on discovering that her husband had lost the deed to their house, separated and later divorced his father, taking Jack with her. Jack has few memories of his father, though the ones he does have were enough to prompt him to take his mother's maiden name, Calico, as his own. Jack helped his mother in her store until he graduated high school, and then he went on to win a scholarship to study pharmaceuticals at college. Now working at an apothecary, Jack, 26, also runs a small side business selling clothing he designs and sews himself online. From his profits (and some handy stock-trading) he's acquired the lease to an apartment building, which he lives in and rents out to help support his mother in her old age.
He's always had an ungodly fascination with pirates, and has fashioned himself a his own pirate name, "Calico Jack." When he's perturbed or when he thinks no one's around, he occasionally talks like a pirate to himself and dreams of getting his own ship.
Calico and "Belle" :: Musically-speaking, Jack Calico likes its easy grace and lilting tones. It reminds him a bit of morning, just waking up and getting ready to seize the day. He likes the business of the lyrics, as he enjoys throwing himself into his work. Jack knows what it's like to not always have the freedom to do what he wants; his parents weren't always the most accommodating when it came to pursuing his passions. He also can relate to its feeling of not really being understood. He has some strange hobbies of his own, like sewing his own clothes and talking like a pirate when no one's around. Jack loves puns (and has been known to crack them when least expected to) as well as clever wordplay, so the song appeals to him in many ways. Though Jack doesn't quite feel the need to lapse off into daydreams all the time, he can see how people can get distracted and want something more than reality offers.

The great pirate captain Calico Jack does not scrapbook. Ha! Those frilly papers and artfully arranged stickers were surely the work of someone else who happened to get their hands on all of Remy's old pictures (and a smattering of Jack's). Because pirates don't make scrapbooks. No, they do not. And even if they did, Calico Jack would surely not be among that number.
