School
Chapter one
Great. Its 6:00 am and I’m laying awake in my dark bedroom, it’s the first day of school. Sure, maybe the first day of school is better for humans but it’s not that way for me. Oh by the way I’m Rain. I’m adopted. My parents don’t know a thing from my past. They think I’m their sweet little angel. Wrong. I’m a murderer. It’s the only way that I can stay alive, drinking blood I mean.
“ Rain, it’s time for school.” my mom said as she knocked on my door.
“I know.” I grumbled as I got up. I always hated it when they interrupted my thoughts.
“What was that dear?” she opened the door.
Not welcome. I put on a smiling face so she wouldn’t give me a lecture about being depressed or controlling my anger. “Thanks mom, I’ll meet you downstairs.”
“Alright, hurry up though. I want you to eat breakfast before you leave.” my mother said as she walked out of my room, closing the door behind her.
Breakfast………if only she knew what I ate for breakfast. I chuckled at the thought. I got up from my bed and looked into my mirror. Big, chocolate eyes, with long dark eyelashes stared back. I was short and skinny for my age but that was the beauty of it. I had my advantages. I could disappear in a crowd without attracting attention, shock my prey, run fast, and hiding in the smallest places. Perfect, though I wouldn’t mind being able to tackle. Oh well, I’ll just deal with what I have.
After I had gotten dressed, brushed my teeth, and fixed my hair, I went downstairs. I was going to have to shove down some human food before I left. My mother was standing in the kitchen getting a glass of milk as I walked in. The car keys weren’t hanging up. My father had left early this morning, I guess I was going to have to take the bus……….or run. No, too risky, someone might notice.
“Good morning,” my mom said as she put the milk jug back in the fridge. She looked over at me and her smile disappeared. Ugh. I knew exactly what her next words would be. “Isn’t that a little dark?” she said. She was talking about my clothes. I was wearing black jeans, purple t-shirt with a black buttoned vest.
“I’m having a bad day. And it was all I could find,” I said as I took a sip of my orange juice. Disgusting. “Well I’m going to go to the bus stop before I’m late.” I got up and picked up my backpack.
“Alright,” My mother sat down on one of the dining room chairs. “Have a fun time at school.” She called out as I slipped on my shoes and opened the door.
“I’ll try to.” I grumbled as I shut the door. A school full of humans. Blood, sweet, delicious blood. I shook my head as I pushed that thought to the back of my mind. I needed to focus on not doing that, not imagining what it would taste like.
It was chilly outside and my skin almost immediately became the same temperature. I took a deep breath and walked across our mowed lawn. This was going to be one long day.
After a stressful ride on the bus with a cheerful group of human students, I started to look for my two best friends, Luna and Victoria. I had always hated calling Victoria by her full name so I gave her the name Vikki. Vikki is 5ft 9, and she loves sports, messing around, and sadly she was obsessed with guys ( I hate that fact about her ). She has curly black hair and light green eyes. And of course she is human………….and she doesn’t know about my secret.
Now Luna is a whole different story. She has the lightest brownish-blond hair, which is straight and blue/purple eyes. Luna is a little bit taller than me and smarter. Me and her had been friends since kinder. She knew everything about me, every last thing. I never kept anything from her. It would be like keeping the sun from shining.
I walked into the school and saw Luna and Vikki standing next to the window.
“Hey guys,” I waved at them as I walked over. “what’s up?”
They both looked up “Hey Rain,” they said in cheerful unison. “How was your summer vacation?” Vikki asked.
“It was alright. I didn’t do much,” except drink blood, kill innocent animals or humans…but I wasn’t going to let her find out about that. “ What about you two?” for some reason the humans I had known before I had found out what I really was…didn’t make me thirsty, which was good. I couldn’t imagine drinking my parents’ or friends’ blood. That would be….insane.
“Me and my family went down to the beach, and had a family reunion but that was about it.” Vikki had three siblings. Two sisters and one brother. When you went over to her house, you had to be ready for anything. Her brothers and sisters were crazy. Vikki was the oldest and she was the only one that could get them off of you…….well I could…but I didn’t want to attract attention.
“I stayed home for summer vacation,” Luna said. Her family was quiet but if you messed with them, you could be swimming in dark waters. They were a close knit family and protected each other. If one of them accepted you, you were pretty much welcome. Her parents were nice but sometimes they worried too much about Luna. Over all she had a good, loving family. “ lets get our schedules before the line gets really long.” With that we headed towards the front office.
Once we got there, there were two guys in front of us. Great. I hated waiting, even if it was for 15 minutes. I know, I know, I’m impatient. Vikki elbowed me. I turned towards her, “What?” I was hoping it wasn’t anything about the people in front of us.
“What do you think of them?” she whispered as she pointed to the people in front. I sighed. I really hated her boy crazy side, but what was I supposed to do? I looked at them. They seemed like two ordinary guys just getting there schedules or something. And they had beautiful necks…….cross that last part out. Focus.
“They’re just two ordinary guys. What’s so special about them?” Luna looked at me with sympathy, she didn’t like this side of Vikki either.
“Rain, the one with the reddish spiky hair on the left is the quarterback,” I had known Vikki had had a crush on the quarterback but I personally had never seen him. I rolled my eyes. I didn’t want to deal with this on the first day of school. I needed to focus on not sinking my fangs into someone’s neck. “and the one on the right is his best friend. I don’t know too much about him.” Her smile faintly disappeared as the red headed guy took his schedule and headed for the door.
“Wait for me at the entrance.” the other guy said as I looked him over. His scent smelled different from anybody I had seen before. He looked human……well I looked human as well……and it almost felt like his blood was calling for me. I took a step closer. Luna looked over at me with a stern look on her face, telling me to stop. Focus.
“Alex, don’t forget to come back later to talk to Mr. Ingles.” the office lady said as he turned around to go. Well at least I would know his name when I sucked him dry. I almost slapped myself for thinking that. He smiled at me, almost like he knew he was causing me pain. I looked away as he left the office, trying to forget how inviting his neck had seemed to me.
After we had gotten our schedules, we looked them over to see if we had any classes together. Luna and Vikki had four classes together, while I only had one with them. Maybe I could switch classes. Nah, that would take to much time and I was lazy, not counting the fact that I was having a bad day. The bell rang, bringing us out of our conversation.
“See you at lunch,” I said as they left for their first period class and I went to mine.
I walked into my class. American Literature. Barely anybody was in class yet, I was three minutes early. I took the seat nearest to the door and sat down. I didn’t want to be surrounded by humans when I was hungry, even if it wasn’t that much. A sweet scent filled my lungs and I looked around to see who it was.
Alex. What was he doing in a sophomore class? Maybe he hadn’t taken it yet. Focusing was going to be even harder with his irresistible scent. He walked past me and took the seat across from me. I would have to take in small amounts of oxygen when I had to talk, otherwise I would avoid taking in the air that was around him.
“Hi.” he said calmly as he put his binder on the desk. I wonder if I could just jump the two feet in between us and taste his sweet smelling blood. Focus.
“Hi.” I could feel my fangs tingle from my thoughts of human blood. It had been a while since I had sunk my fangs into a human’s neck. I sighed and looked away.
“What’s wro-” the teacher cut him off before he could finish his sentence.
“Hello class, I am now your English teacher,” well no duh, I thought as she kept on going. “My name is Ms. Dennis. Today we will be-” a teenage girl walked in, looking like she had been in a hurry to get to school. “Young lady, why are you late on the first day of school?” Ms. Dennis asked.
The girl took the empty seat next to me,“ I’m sorry……I missed the bus, so I had to walk here.” she answered in a quiet voice.
“Well next time set your alarm clock.” the teacher said, “As I was saying,” she turned to the whole class, “you will write half a page on what you did this summer and share it with your group.”
The girl next to me sighed. I got out my binder and took a piece of paper out. Everyone else did the same and started writing. I was never good at writing and I didn’t like writing either. Oh well. What was I going to write? I spent the summer drinking blood? It would be amusing to see Ms. Dennis’ reaction to that.
I laughed a little and started writing what a regular human would be doing on summer vacation. The teacher took attendance as we wrote. It wasn’t hard to think something up. Humans usually don’t do a whole lot during the summer. They hang out with friends, go to parties, spend some time with family, go to the beach, relax, listen to music, all that stuff that you do when your bored.
“Now, class I would like you to exchange papers with the people at your group. If you find mistakes in someone’s paper I would like you to circle it.” Ms. Dennis said as we traded papers. Alex handed his paper over to me and I gave my paper to the girl sitting next to me. She slid her paper over to him and batted her eyelashes. I almost laughed my head off.
His paper had his scent on it. I took it gently with my hands and stopped breathing. I read the paper slowly trying to ignore his scent and focus on the words. I couldn’t understand why he made it so hard for me to control myself when I was fine around everyone else. I shrugged those thoughts off and went back to reading the paper.
Alex had spent the summer doing what every normal teenager should be doing: hanging out with friends, going to parties, messing around, and spending time with family. My eyes caught something at the bottom of the paper. At the bottom of his paper he had written the question he hadn’t been able to finish at the beginning of class.
What’s wrong?
I wrote my short answer back. I didn’t want to be writing notes with the person that I wanted so badly to kill.
Just having a bad day.
I handed his paper back and his eyes skimmed to the bottom of the page. Alex wrote something down and passed it back. Great.
Yeah, Mondays suck. So what’s your next class?
I guess my day wouldn’t be getting any better so why not just tease the little “vampire” with your scent? I sighed. He would be lucky of he got out of this class alive, and a miracle if he survived the whole day.
Science.
I was about to hand the paper back, when I thought, wouldn’t it be great to know his next class? I could just ask to go the library next period and sneak into Alex’s next class. Or I could meet him once the class ended and lead him away from the crowd. Focus. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to know his next class even if I wouldn’t be able to kill him today.
What about yours?
I added and handed the paper back. Alex took the paper and started to write the answer to my question when the teacher started talking.
“Alright class, please put your name and date at the top of your paper and turn them into the first period box.” Ms. Dennis said as Alex erased the notes at the bottom of his paper. I had already put my name and date on my paper so I got up to put it into the box.
I put my paper into the box and turned around only to end up face to face with Alex. His ice blue eyes gazed into mine as I listened to his blood run through his veins. A smiled tugged on his lips as I looked away. Alex’s neck looked so inviting, I could say it would be like having an ice cream Sunday with a cherry on top, or at least that’s as close as I can get to describing how human blood tastes to me with human food. I carefully walked around him, making sure that his scent didn’t rub off on me. I didn’t want to have his sweet scent to be the cause of me losing control later.
I returned to my seat. The next time something like that happened and I wasn’t on guard, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to stay in control. Hopefully he wouldn’t be in any of my other classes. Alex sat back down. I could almost feel his icy eyes begging me to look over at him. I avoided his gaze and tried to focus on the work that was given.
The bell rang about 45 minutes later and I almost ran out of the class. I needed to get a breath of fresh air and get away from Alex. I glided through the crowd of teenage students to the end of the hallway where the door was. Everyone was in hurry to get to class and didn’t notice when I slipped through the door to get out.
I breathed in the cold, fresh air. Perfect. No one was outside, all the teachers were helping the freshman find their way around the school. The air was just the way I loved it…..too bad it wouldn’t be that way all day considering it was summer. The bell rang. I sighed, I was already late. Oh well. I opened the door and walked to my second period class, which was science.
A little history on the science teacher. He loses everything. You practically have to redo everything three times so he can actually grade it. He was a crazy guy and a pain but at least we got to explode things as long as no one ended up bleeding or dead. That’s one thing I liked about him. Oh yeah, his name is Mr. Ruther.
He was already talking to the class as I walked in about a minute late. He ignored the fact that I was late and kept on talking. Last year when I had him for biology I would always be late, so this was no big deal.
I seated myself to the far side of the room, and took my backpack off. “As I was saying, today we will go to the library to get our science books.” Mr. Ruther said as everyone else moaned. I was surprised he actually remembered that we had to get science books. He didn’t care much for those things, the only thing that he wanted to do was mix chemicals and do crazy stuff, which was fine with me.
I slowly got up and got my id card out from my pocket. “Hey Rain.” I turned around to see who it was. Ryan. Me and him had the same math class last year. I smiled, he was a good friend. I felt bad for forgetting about him over the summer.
“ Hey,” I said as the class filed through the door, “how was your summer?”
“ Eh, it was alright. It was pretty boring, I didn’t have any short people to pick on.” He placed his hand on my head and messed up my hair. I laughed. That was one thing about Ryan, he always had a comment about how short I was. “ What about you?” he said as we entered the library.
I ran my fingers through my hair to bring it back to the way it was, “It was okay, I didn’t really do anything.” Dang it. The science books were on the top self. I slumped my shoulders and looked over at Ryan.
“ Too high for you short stuff?” he chuckled as he got a book for himself.
I shoved him gently, laughing. “ Oh come on Ryan, help the poor little midget.” I looked over at the person that had made the comment. It was Andrew, I hadn’t realized he had this class.
“Andy!” I said as they both laughed.
“ Students quiet down this is a library.” the angry librarian said. Andrew and Ryan struggled to keep quiet as I gave up trying to get them to get me a book. I looked around the room for a chair.
“ Aw, its alright shrimp, I’ll get the book for you.” Ryan said still trying to stop laughing. He took another book and handed it to me. I took it and thanked him.
“No problem.” he said smiling. Andrew elbowed him and whispered something in his ear. I rolled my eyes and went to the line to check out the book. I was going to have to keep my hunger down and stay in complete control around them. They always come up with the craziest ideas. I scanned my id and went over to the door to wait for everyone else to get their books checked out.
Once everyone had a book, we headed back to the classroom. I walked on the side of the crowd of my classmates. Hmm…..I wonder where Andrew and Ryan are? They were probably goofing off somewhere, or planning to catch me off guard. I sighed and kept walking down the hall. All of a sudden hands appeared around my waist and my feet were off the ground. I almost hissed and attacked the person that had picked me when I realized it was Ryan. Andrew and him were laughing their heads off as he twirled me around.
“ Ryan put her down before she bites your head off.” Mr. Ruther said as I gave a fake attempt to escape his grasp.
Ryan kept on laughing but he put me back down. “ I don’t think my teeth could get through his thick skull.” I said in a joking manner as Andrew laughed.
“ I don’t think you would even be able to reach my head from down there.” Ryan said in the same tone and he poked my side and I jumped. I hated when people did that to me but I could live with it. We entered the classroom and stacked our science books on the book self. Since we barely ever used them, there wasn’t much of a point to take them to our lockers and back everyday so we just left them here.
“Alright class, take your seats.” Mr. Ruther said as I took the seat that I had been sitting in before. Andrew and Ryan took the seats next to me. I sighed, I had a feeling this would be one crazy class. The rest of the period was spent doing whatever we wanted. Mr. Ruther hadn’t had anything planned except for the getting the books and we didn’t want to take notes so we would just do that tomorrow. I’m surprised they didn’t send the principal to check on us. Ryan didn’t pick me up again but Andrew did. I was glad the bell rang, I didn’t know how much longer I could stay in control with them around.
“See you later shortie.” Ryan said as I walked out and Andrew chuckled.
I rolled my eyes at him and smiled, “Bye, guys.”
I had history next with the most boring teacher you could imagine. Mr. Farris. He could go on and on about history and not even fall asleep. He also was mono toned so that just made it all the more fun. Honestly I don’t think he even had his own life out of school. Mr. Farris always stayed about 2 hours after school, and even on weekends he would come and grade papers. He took his job like it was life threatening if he didn’t finish grading things on time. I don’t know. He’s just a weird guy.
I walked into my third period class and took a random seat. I was pretty such he already had a seating chart for us. I sighed as other students came in and sat down. This was going to be one long and boring class so all I wanted to do was space out but Mr. Farris’s annoying voice wasn’t going to let me do that.
“Hello class, this is your history class and I have a seating chart so I would like all of you to line up against the wall.” he said as all of us got up, “I will tell you where you sit.” We all moaned as we went to the back wall and he called out our names as he pointed to the desks. I heard my name and went to the desk he was pointing at. It was in the second group of tables near the front. I hated sitting in the front, it meant I could hear Mr. Farris’s voice clearly and not be able to space out.
Once everyone had taken their now assigned seats, Mr. Farris started his lesson. He told us to do a K/W/L chart, which is what I know/ what I want to know/ and what I want to learn chart. I hated those things but since I wasn’t able to space out, I was going to have to do it. So pretty much third period sucked. Mr. Farris talked the whole time and everyone ran out when the bell rang.
By the time everyone was in the cafeteria I had pushed my slight hunger down. I met Luna and Vikki at our usually spot, which is a small round table at the end of the cafeteria by the door that led outside.
“ Hey, how were your classes so far?” Luna said as she sat down next to me with a plate of pizza and an apple.
“First period was hell, second was crazy, and third was boring. What about you two?” I said as Vikki took a bit of her sandwich.
Luna answered since Vikki’s mouth was full. “Well I had history first which wasn’t that great. Then Vikki and I had P.E and theater together. So, overall it was alright.” once she finished she took a bite out of her red apple. Vikki nodded in agreement.
“Nice.” I said blankly. “Well I’m going to go for a walk, want to join me later?” I asked as I stood up.
“I could join you right now.” someone said behind me and a sweet, delicious scent filled my lungs. My hunger roared inside me. I turned around to see who it was. Alex. Why couldn’t he just disappear? If I didn’t know better I would say he enjoyed causing me pain. He had one of those innocent smiles on his face that made me want to kill him even more.
“ Um…Luna and I were planning to go to the library and it looks that you have found someone to keep you company.” Vikki said. I almost growled with disappointment.
“Alright, then.” I took a step closer to the door. “ Let’s go.” I said to Alex with no emotion whatsoever. I walked stiffly trying not to take in his scent. It didn’t make any sense…why was he the one that drove me insane? If he was a smart person he would leave me alone.
Alex opened the door and I walked through it. Most girls would be thankful for that but I just wanted to get the hell away from him before my instincts took over. Maybe the fresh air will help. I took in a deep breath before he appeared next to me and we started to walk.
“So…..what’s up?” he said, eager to end the silence that had fallen over the both of us.
“Not much.” except that you drive me crazy and you should go away before I kill you. “My day hasn’t been getting any better. You?” my supply of air ran out and I had to take another breath so I would be able to answer any other questions that he had for me.
“ Everything has been alright.” he said as he edged closer to me. Alex’s scent filled my lungs and I felt like pushing him against the side of the building. Then rip his neck open and drink. I swallowed back a snarl as he started talking again. “ What’s your next class?” he didn’t seem to notice the blood thirsty anger that flowed in me.
“Theater.” I answered quickly, hoping that the bell would ring soon. I really wanted to sink my fangs into his soft neck but I would have to wait until later.
“Nice, I have the same class next.” Alex said and I was screaming on the inside. Did this school want me to kill some one!?!? Oh well, I’m sure no one will notice some senior disappear. Focus, I was getting too carried away. Sometimes it really sucked having a vivid imagination.
“You’re into theater?” I didn’t really care about his answer but it gave me something to say.
“Yeah, I guess. It gives me something to do.” Alex answered, looking over at me. I looked straight ahead. I knew that if I looked over and saw his veins on his neck, I would probably attack him.
“What time is it?” I didn’t want to stay out here with him any longer. I hated the way his scent made it so hard for me to stay in control. What was it about him? Did have a different type of blood or something? These were only questions I could get to answer if I got to know more about him, which would mean I would have to spend more time with him. I sighed.
“I’m not sure.” he said as he tilted his head slightly. That was the perfect position for my attack. His neck was unprotected and I could just turn sideways, pull him closer and bite. Easy as that. “Why?” his voice brought me back from my imaginary dinner.
“I just need to go to my locker before it’s time for class.” it was a pretty good excuse. It made me sound like I wanted to be on time even though I honestly didn’t care.
The sidewalk curved to the right and we went with it.
“We could always go inside and check, if you want to.” good idea. Your going to need some witnesses to see me kill you. Well I wasn’t going to be able to kill him anytime soon, so why not?
“Sure.” I walked towards the front entrance and he followed. Again Alex opened the door for me and I walked through it. I wish he would just leave me alone……or did I? “Sure.” I walked towards the front entrance and he followed. Again Alex opened the door for me and I walked through it. I wish he would just leave me alone……or did I? I knew I didn’t want him…..but his blood was something irresistible, something that I wanted to try. And the only way I was going to be able to do that was if I hung out with him. I guess you can’t get everything you want with one thing.
Thankfully his friend showed up, the guy that had the red spiky hair. “Hey, Josh.” Alex said as he stopped. I didn’t want to be rude so I stopped as well.
“Hey.” Josh looked over at me. “Hi.” he said as he looked back over at Alex with a questioning look.
“ Oh, this is Rain.” Alex gestured towards me and I have a half hearted smile. Just get out of here already!. “Rain, this is Josh.” he finished.
“Hi.” I said, trying to be polite. It was kind of hard when you wanted to kill the person next to you. Josh nodded politely back.
“ Um…well I need to go to my locker. See ya later.” I said as I shoved my hands in my pockets and started to walk off.
“ Oh, okay. See you in theater.” Alex said. I really wasn’t looking forward to that. I walked through the hallways to get to my locker. Everyone was talking about what they had done that summer and catching up on gossip. That’s what I hated, rumors and gossip. Oh well. I took out my binder and closed my locker. I wasn’t going to go back outside, that’s for sure, but I could go to the library.
Once I had gotten through the crowds of people I finally reached the library. Luna and Vikki were standing next to a book self, looking for something. I walked over to them.
“Hey.” I said as they both looked up.
“Hey, Rain.” Vikki said cheerfully.
“Hi.” Luna said as she returned her gaze to the book self.
“What are you looking for?” I knew Vikki didn’t really care about books and Luna was a good reader.
“We’re trying to find Romeo and Juliet, it’s for our theater class.” Vikki answered as Luna pulled out a book. I sighed, I was tired of hearing about Shakespeare. We had done a whole project on him last year for our English class.
“Nice.” I said just as the bell rang. “Well, I’m going to head for class. Bye.”
“Bye.” Luna and Vikki said as I walked out. I went down the hallway and turned to the right to where my theater class was. I reached the back of the room, where the lights were dim and took a seat.
Soon after Alex walked in just before the bell rang again. He saw me and walked over, taking the seat next to me. I swallowed back a growl. Well at least it wasn’t as bright back here. It wouldn’t be as noticeable if I lost control and attacked him. Focus.
“Hello class, some of you might know me from last year but I’m Ms. Brown.” she said as Ryan walked in. Yay. Someone to distracted from killing the idiot next to me. “Ryan, next time I hope you will be on time. I wont send to the front office today since it is the first day of school.” Ms. Brown said as Ryan looked around the room for a place to sit. I waved my hand over to the desk next to me, so he could sit there. He smiled and walked over. Ryan saw Alex and his eyes glistened with…jealousy? I pushed that thought aside as he sat down. Whatever it was, I would deal with it later.
“As I was saying…” Ms. Brown went on, explaining different styles and ways to acting and filming. I had heard this speech last year so I turned my attention to Ryan and Alex.
“So…” it almost felt like Ryan and Alex were going to rip each other apart. I wouldn’t mind seeing Alex get killed, but I would want to be the one doing it. “what’s up guys?” I was sitting in the desk between them.
Ryan smiled at me. “ Not much, shortie.” he said cheerfully. I was glad the mood lightened up so I smiled back.
“Hey Rain, want to hang out after school?” Alex said. His mood was still a little dark and I wish he would just disappear. I would of said yes because I wanted to drink his blood but I needed to stay in control.
“Um…I kind of have some stuff to do after school.” it was true. I badly needed to go hunting. I could always have him for dessert. I sighed. I wasn’t going to be able to focus with him around until I got something in me. Ryan had a smile tugging on his lips. Of course he thought that I was just turning him down, and I kind of was. Also I barely knew Alex, I had just met him this morning, even though I could protect myself, I wasn’t sure he could say the same for himself. I wanted to have my prey at least have a chance to fight back, it was a lot more fun that way.
“Oh okay. Maybe some other time?” Alex asked.
“Sure.” Ryan’s smirk disappeared and Alex smiled. Ryan had no idea that the only reason I was agreeing to that was because I wanted to basically kill him. Wait a minute……why did he even care?
I returned my attention to Ms. Brown. I didn’t want to see Ryan’s narrowed eyes at Alex, and Alex’s crooked smile. It was just too weird. I took a deep breath forgetting that Alex was near by. It was a big mistake. His scent surrounded me and I could feel my fangs long to bite his neck. I placed my hands on my face and closed my eyes. My hair feel down, covering my face. I was sure that my eyes were red. My body stiffened as I told it that it would have to wait till later.
“Rain, are you okay?” Ryan asked with a concerned voice.
I nodded robotically, not looking up. My fingers tensed and I slowly became in control of myself again. I swallowed back a hiss that had been wanting to escape my lips.
I flexed my fingers and placed them on the desk before me. My face was still hidden behind the curtain of my hair and I sighed.
I slowly lifted my face and looked over at the both of them. Ryan’s and Alex’s eyes looked at me confused and concerned. I smiled just to let them know I was fine, even if I really wasn’t. They bought it and looked relieved that I was ‘okay’. My fangs returned to their original length and I relaxed just a little bit. We sat in silence for the rest of the period, I didn’t risk breathing again. I walked out rather quickly when the bell rang, eager to get away from Alex. Ryan didn’t try to catch up with me and I was thankful for that. He knew when I needed my own space.
Once I had calmed down I went to my next class. It was math, I had it with Vikki and Luna. I took a deep breath and walked in. Luna was sitting near the middle in a group of four desks. I sat down next to her.
“Hey.” I said as Vikki came in and found us.
“Hi.” Luna said and Vikki took the seat across from Luna.
“Hey guys.” Vikki said enthusiastically. It seemed like she was full of energy.
“You seem pretty happy. Something exciting happen?” Luna asked Vikki.
Vikki nodded her head and starting telling us that the guy she liked was in the her class before this one. I almost slapped Luna for asking that question but it seemed like she regretted asking it already. Luna and I were happy when the teacher finally walked into the classroom. Not that we hated Vikki but sometimes she got a little carried away.
“Hello class, I’m sure you have heard that more than once today, so I’ll introduce myself and we can get to work.” he was a new teacher this year, so math wasn’t going to be any fun, but then again, it never had been. “My name is Mr. John Newport. You can call me Mr. Newport or Newport and nothing else.” Vikki had stopped talking by then. “Today we will be going over a couple things that you might have learned last year.” he started to hand out sheets of paper to everyone. Perfect. A review on the first day.“ Tomorrow we will be checking out your math books.” he said as he finished passing out the papers. Luna sighed and got out a pencil. Vikki was disappointed that she didn’t get to finish her story, but I was glad that she didn’t.
I got my paper and looked it over, taking about a pencil I started doing the first problem. So in one sentence math was boring. After everyone had finish the assignment, he took the time to start learning all our names. Luna, Vikki, and I never really liked math, but this was one of the worst math classes we had been to. I hope it gets better as the year goes on.
I walked out of the classroom and headed for my last class, which is French. The only reason I was taking it, was because if I didn’t have get two years in another language, I couldn’t graduate. I had taken it my freshman year and this would be my last year of it. The teacher was alright, I just didn’t like her. So, you can pretty much guess how that class went.
That’s how it went for about a week: first period being stressful, second being crazy, third was boring, fourth, again, stressful, fifth being okay, and sixth was when I wanted the day to be over, until theater. We had about 10 minutes left of class. Ms. Brown had just finished talking about the new play and how she needed help with the set.
I started to pack my things absentmindedly when Alex came over to me.
“Hey…um ..Rain,” he voice had an edge of nervousness but otherwise it sounded just fine. I looked up from my things. “I was wondering if you wanted to hang out some time.” Alex placed his hands on either side of my desk, almost hovering over me. I was trying so hard not to breathe, but I would have to, if I wanted to answer. My answer was going to be no but when I took in a small amount of air, his scent filled my lungs. I just couldn’t say no to someone who drove me crazy like that.
“Sure.” I said, I could feel my fangs grow longer. His neck was pretty close, all I had to do was pull him down and bite. This was perfect, we could go some where deserted and I would finally be able to taste his sweet blood. “When?” I asked. In the corner of my eye, I could see Ryan ball up his fist and struggle to say in his seat. Why was he acting so weird? I pushed that question away as Alex began to answer my question.
Alex sighed with relief and said “ Well, what about today after school?”, then it hit me. I needed to focus, I needed to find something to bring me back into control. I couldn’t back away from my answer now but I was going to need to hunt before I went anywhere with him.
“ Um… I have some things I have to take care of after school, but I’m free after that.” I said as I pushed my chair back a little and he stood up. I took in another small breath as he started to speak. Again his scent filled my lungs and my body almost lunged forward. I held the edge of the desk with my hands, but being careful not to break it, I stood up.
“Alright, where do you want to met at?” I almost laughed. Giving me the choice was about the worst thing he could do. I would of answered a dark alley but that would of made me sound creepy. We could work on the set, that was a pretty good idea. It would keep me busy and in case it became impossible to control myself, I could pull him into most deserted hallway.
“Here, at about 7:30.” Alex looked disappointed but he quickly covered it up. He had gotten the point that this wasn’t going to be anything special, just some time working on the set. Alex had no idea how lucky he was, I could of said something more appealing but that would just lead him to his death. Wait a minute, why did I even care if he lived or died? Because you don’t want to blow you cover, I answered my own question.
“Okay.” he said as the bell rang and I made my way to the door with everyone else. I tightened my grip on my books and binder as I pasted Alex and walked into the hallway. I regretted saying yes to him but I couldn’t do anything when my hunger took control. I became appealing to any guy without even realizing it, leading them away from everyone else and then killing them, that’s what my hunger did to me.
I became irresistible to them as their blood became irresistible to me. It was sad but that was what happened when I lost control over my hunger. I had never completely lost control, if that happened, I would skip the leading away part and go straight to the drinking. It wouldn’t even matter what type of blood it was, or even if it was a human or an animal, just as long as it was blood.
I sighed as I walked into my next class. The rest of that day was a waste of time, the only thing that was on my mind was to try and not kill anybody until after school. As soon as my last class had ended I quickly walked out, got my backpack out of my locker, shoved my things into to and walked home. There was no way that I was going on a bus full of humans and it wasn’t that long of a walk.
Once I got home and placed my backpack in my room, I jumped the fence to out backyard. We had a forest behind us since we lived on the edge of town. It wasn’t very big but animals still lived there. I picked up my pace as the trees grew thicker and my home was out of sight. Taking in a deep breathe I caught the sent of a coyote, I let my instincts take control. In no time I was running, dodging trees and catching up to my next meal.
It didn’t take long before I was a few yards away from the coyote. I stopped, waiting for it’s next move. This is the part I didn’t understand, I would rather get it done and over with, but my mind had other plans. It liked to toy with its food. I couldn’t regain my control until I got some blood in me, so I would have to live with putting the poor animal through a long death.
The coyote’s ears perked up as I took a step closer. His ears twitched as his eyes scanned the area. My fangs tingled with excitement as I rushed over and grabbed the coyote’s fur. He yelped in pain and surprise, his head wiped around to bite it’s attacker. I was too fast for him, I removed my hand as his teeth bit the spot I had been a moment ago. The coyote realized that he wouldn’t be able to run with me being so close, so he turned his body towards me, growling, hackles raised. I lunged forward hitting his back and quickly moving to another place. Again he missed me by a couple of inches and was getting angrier by the second.
My hunger overpowered my instincts and I grabbed the coyote by the hackles, pulling him off the ground. He yelped in pain and then growled as he whipped his head from side to side, trying to bite me. I grabbed either side of the coyote’s neck and snapped it as his teeth reached my arm. I would have to break his jaw to get my arm back but all I wanted for now was blood. He hung from my arm as I sunk my fangs into his neck, pulling my fangs to the side, I made two long cuts. I ripped the fur by the place I had bit him and began to drink.
It’s blood was warm, it didn’t taste as good as a human’s but it was better than a herbivore’s blood. Soon I was done with my meal and I placed the coyote’s lifeless body on the ground. Some other animal would eat the rest, I thought as I snapped the coyote‘s jaw and pulled my arm out. I licked the rest of the blood off my fangs and lips and wiped my blood from my arm. It would heal before I made it back home. I took a deep breath and followed my scent back to the fenced backyard.
I looked up at all the windows making sure that my parents still weren’t home and jumped over the fence. I walked into the house through the back door, making my way to the sink, I washed the rest of the blood off my arm. I dried my hands and arm off with a hand towel and walked to the foot of the stairs. Picking up my backpack I went up the stairs and into my room.
Dropping my backpack near my desk, I looked at the time. It was 7 o’clock, I was glad that my hunger had left me since it was almost time for me to make my way to school. But then again I could leave now so I wouldn’t have to run to the school. I left my room and went down stairs. Putting on my shoes and taking the spare key I walked out the front door and locked it, hoping my hunger wouldn’t rise when I met Alex.
