they were teasing.
they had no business being so contradictory to the landscape
sharply perpendicular to the valley, asymmetrical and
towering and deep hues of purple and blue
in a desperate claw for the heavens
in a fight to reach some bruised perception of a sky
what kind of tune
suits that sort of contrast
you wonder, but somehow
there is always a barrier to your understanding
there is always a pane of glass in the way.
and that was why
when you saw her shrine
lovely and ironic and iconic
you felt the stir. that was the day
your soul left you in your sleep.
just for a visit. just to breathe the air and watch the stars
the place was lonely.
lots of trees, but they didn't care what was on the ground
they were competing too, they were itching to have a poke at god
how many angels wings got caught on their needles
how much had they seen?
what kind of tune
is formed from so much quiet
you begged them to tell you, but
somehow it seems they could not hear.
they just shivered like a ghost were among them.

if I were a good writer I would tell everyone eloquently about how when you're in the valley the mountains are always present on one side, really tall and really blue and how when you're a little kid they look so close and everyone just wants to run away one day, run all the way to the mountains. I would tell everyone about how the mountains of northern california look from a plane. how they are like a thick green vein between the valley and the ocean. I would tell everyone about what the mountain air feels like and the trees that make them look like the limbs of a big green furry monster.
but I'm not, so you get this instead.
