Merle is half human/half cat, often referred to as a "cat girl". She was orphaned at a young age and taken in by the people of Fanelia. She loves Van and is extremely protective of him, even being jealous of Hitomi at the beginning of the series. She is very mischievous and a trouble maker, always playing tricks on Hitomi.

In an Escaflowne guild that I'm in they're saying that Allen is like 35. I thought he was 21.
