The year is 2509 and what remains of Earth’s once great civilization is now split into small self-governed communes. Less than one dozen of these societies still maintain access to twenty-second century technology and even fewer have been able to advance upon it. This is the largest existing society left on this war plagued planet with its eternally dark skies and rust colored oceans. Rainfall here, when it comes, is slick with oil and snow fall is gray and toxic like volcanic ash making life implausible, and impossible if not for the scientific advances of the twenty-second century.
New Eden is the shining silvery capitol of what was once New York City, boasting a population of scientists, mathematicians and artisans; her high perimeter walls keep out the undesirables that flood the surrounding land that has come to be called Dante’s Shallow. Under the domed world of New Eden artificial blue skies loom over head and offer a view of the world that was, complete with holographic wildlife. While New Eden is controlled by a highly religious senate that monitors everything from marriage to breeding via strict licensing; in sharp contrast Dante’s Shallow has no form of self-government save for the masses of individual gangs that are constantly warring with one another. Gambling, loan sharking and prostitution are rampant and rivers of blood stain the eroded streets of the Shallow.
Interaction between Dante’s Shallow and New Eden is far more than limited. Dante’s Shallow sympathizers who have snuck technology out to the dying outlands from within the shining city have been hunted down and tried for treason by the senate over the past decades. What sympathizers that do still exist will only deal directly with the underground council in Dante’s Shallow. This small, elite order has done its best to collect those who might be considered doctors, programmers and the like to keep the Shallow from destroying herself.
In 2462 New Eden designed a plague in secrecy. NR72, code named Black Death II, was released on the growing population of Dante’s Shallow in 2479 only after a vaccine had been created to counter it; a vaccine that has been kept out of the Shallow’s reach to date. The plague only takes hold in approximately fifty percent of the Shallow’s citizens but the fatality rate is well over ninety percent within four years of contracting it, the few remaining die within a decade. You can spot the victims of NR72 by the spidery black veins that crawl across their skin, coloring the pupils, lips, fingertips and other highly enervated parts of the body jet black in its latest stages. The unstable and unpredictable bioengineered plague can be contracted at any stage in life without warning or cause. The Shallow is dying.
Those who dwell in Dante’s Shallow are forced to carve a name for themselves through the most cutthroat means imaginable or risk becoming another faceless victim while those in New Eden are forced to conform to perfect lives in a perfect environment under strict monitoring. No matter the environment or advances in scientific methods the only thing that remains the same in this world is the Human Nature Complex, those in chaos may long for peace and those with peace may desire rebellion. Dante’s Shallow has no protection from the elements; produce and livestock only survive through careful monitoring in closed facilities, even still most foodstuffs are synthetic and reminiscent of military freeze-dried protein bricks. Living quarters are typically cramped apartments barely holding together due to lack of resources and travel outside of the city is most often a death sentence due to constant dust bowls and inclement weather.Technology__x Technology is all but frozen in time. Television is controlled by the gangs and consists mostly of advertisements making it obsolete. Some bionics technology still remains if you somehow have the means to afford having your left eye replaced with that shiny sniper scope orb, just be sure that you truly can pay up.Crossing Over__xGetting into New Eden is an expensive and time consuming endeavor. Anyone entering infected with NR72 will be detected by the biosphere encasing the city and will be executed immediately. All New Eden residents have a biochip implanted, a necessity for moving through the city without being detected, and a technology that Dante’s Shallow has not been able to replicate. Acquiring a chip is done through collecting it from a New Eden born citizen making ‘chip hunting’ a profitable career and crossing over from New Eden to Dante’s Shallow for any reason a dangerous endeavor.
If you’ve made it this far then using the underground tunnels into New Eden are the only points of entry. This maze of piping was designed for New Eden scientists to leave to collect samples from the dying world around them for study. It is not uncommon to hear of people getting lost in the underground system and never finding their way back out. This is also a safety precaution to make it harder for chip hunters to track the scientists.Conforming__x • Top of the food chain__//

New Eden is a domed city with the most advanced technology in the known world. The skies are crystal blue miles of holographic imagery, simulated birds fly overhead and in the parks lifelike biomechanical woodland creatures exist for the amusement of park goers. High rises filled with loft living cover the city and bioscanners at hundreds of checkpoints ensure that no illnesses breakout in the city without immediate quarantine. Biomechanical humans live side by side with true humans, one indistinguishable from the other. Initially these fake humans were created to handle the less desirable jobs the city had to offer, but have since been found in every known sector of New Eden.
Every imaginable luxury and entertainment can be found here, but not without a cost. Anyone who does not comply to the sterile lifestyle of New Eden is exiled to Dante’s Shallow at best and executed (‘Recalled’ for biohumans) or turned into the guinea pigs of the senate’s personal science team at worst. Marriage, breeding and career choice are all licensed events based off of careful screening of a person’s natural predisposition, also acting to weed out all genetic abnormalities and undesirable traits.Technology__x Virtual reality, nanotechnology, biomechanics, personality engineering and all of the modern conveniences a human, or biohuman, could desire.Crossing Over__xMoving from New Eden to Dante’s Shallow is perhaps easier than the other way around but considerably less safe. If caught by chip hunters you’ll find a quick execution coming your way, if discovered by the senate your chances are not much better. If during your excursion to Dante’s Shallow you should contract NR72 you are guaranteed to be caught reentering the city. Most who would risk all of this are either Dante’s Shallow sympathizers or young fool headed adolescents with misguided notions of freedom. Harlow is the descendant of champion fighters for the gangs in Dante’s Shallow. Her father died when she was barely old enough to spell her name and she was trained to work off his debt. Her mother contracted NR72 when Harlow was twelve and died two years later; leaving her to care for her younger sister Ophelia. Harlow made a name for herself in the rings until New Eden’s senate set it’s gaze on Ophelia, conducting research on humans with exceptional ESP. When Ophelia was abducted Harlow spent every cent she had making connections and gathering intel on ‘why’ and ‘how’. A fighter would never make enough for an expedition into New Eden and so the assassin was born.
It has been three years since Ophelia was taken and Harlow still hasn’t gathered all of the necessary resources to get her sister out of New Eden, assuming she is still alive.

Xanthe was born into Dante's Shallow to an aged prostitute. It's needless to say that she was an accident between her mother and a customer. Her mother was lacking in customers as it was, and being pregnant didn't help at all. Naturally, when her mother gave birth, she dumped her with the other prostitutes in her sex ring and ran off to try and get into Eden. No one knows for sure what happened to Xanthe's mother, but it's very likely that she was killed.
Raised by prostitutes, Xanthe has taken on a dignified role as a prostitute--exotic dancer. Only the best of the best make it into Dante's Shallow's exotic dancing sex ring, and she made the cut. Xanthe doesn't have the best life, but she does well for a prostitute. She's a high-price hooker and proud of it. Someday, she wants to buy a microchip from a chip hunter and live in Eden, but for right now, she's content to live in Dante's Shallow.

Freya’s birth brought her death, something she never felt guilty for, but it left her completely with her father. Killing was some of the best business, so her good ol’ dad cashed in and became a rather good assassin. He liked to be called Six. Freya watched him more than he realized and picked up on how to be good in the job, but she wanted to collect chips more than kill ‘innocent’ people.
When she got her own place, Freya contacted people she knew through her father to get a job with the right people. Her father knows but never mentions it and they still have dinner every now and then, both afraid the other is going to get killed one day.

Naverin “Miss” Lovell is the daughter of High Senator Lovell, and the first of her kind. To hide Madame Lovell’s inability to bare children Naverin was created by the New Eden scientists. She is a biohuman that grows and ages as a human does and yet is not human. Inside of her head is a living computer making her a frightening proficient at anything she chooses to take on and all of her emotions are preprogrammed reactions with a new form of AI that allows her to adapt in a human-like fashion. She is indistinguishable from any other New Eden citizen.
Naverin enjoys the arts and has risen through the theater ranks to become the city’s Prima Donna but she is also an expert at the piano and fencing for sport.

They lived alright even if they were up to their knees in debt. But Ambra knew her parents wouldn't have to worry about that for long. Some day, she'd become a famous scientist and everything would be better. She imagined it so simple, as easy as reading a book. She would cure the diseases that plagued New Eden, discover the secrets of the world and help people. It all seemed so perfect, so possible.
After snagging an internship as a lab assistant in her second term of college, Ambra started to realize science wasn't as glorious as she'd thought. Still, she had her dreams and she kept at it. Perhaps she shouldn't have. Her family had long since passed away and she was, as some would say, expendable. The lab didn't want assistants, it wanted test subjects. She became one. It was during her time being poked and prodded and cut off from the world that her idealistic views turned sour. She began to hate the city, hate everything it stood for. When she was finally released a year later she was weak, thin, and invisible to society.

Borne of an influential Father who avoided the political arena, and a mother more interested in her face than her child, Alexander 'Moozh' Sidorov lived a solitary childhood, largely spent with his tutor, or above watching people scramble about their business. Although he was initially assigned as a Scientist, in his father's footsteps, he soon lost interest and his ambitions led him towards (with his Father's influence helping pave the way) a role in the politics of the Colony.
Excelling at it, Alexander quickly rose to prominence amongst the Senators, and can often be found forming a coalition to support one or another of his causes. Although no one outside the senate knows this except in rumour, Alexander has been a leading proponent of expanding the use of the Plague on Dante's Shallow.

Amital does not have much of a past. He never knew his parents or any of his family, he was taken not even a year after his birth. The Senate was tired of sending scientists out to their death and so they chose to try and alter a young human into the perfect bodyguard, or possibly even someone to get samples himself. Amital was only told his name once at a young age but has not forgotten it.
Their ideal traits for their new experiment, which they called 'SB01' or scientific bodyguard 'version one,' were an immunity to the NR72 virus, independance but still docile enough to follow orders, strong enough to handle anything the outside world could throw at him, and finally a complete lack of emotions so as to increase mental logic and create a much more obedient subject. The predicted age for these traits to actually take effect was 22 so it is unsure which succeded and which failed yet.
